Boot Slowed Down Cannot Find Cause
Dec 5, 2012
After log on for roughly 3 minutes or so the PC load times for most things are quite slower than usual. I can hear the HDD spinning being read and written to i presume.Under task manager processes tab (inc all users) the main culprits for CPU usage are a few svchost.exe (mainly PID 948 which includes windows audio endpoint builder, which is also the one that uses the most memory)After i stop hearing the HDD work which is usually when the processes stop jumping around the PC speed ups dramatically and to the speed that it should be.This happened gradually as the PC got older etc more programs installed. But this is my confusion, i have NO crap if you like on here just needed programs like office, Norton 360, Itunes, a few games and few others random things.I watch carefully what i download and scan the whole system every now and then with Norton 360, spybot S&D and malwarebytes. There is usually nothing there.I use Ccleaner and clear up everything once a month and also clean the registry. My msconfig.exe boot settings are cut down to barely anything, about 8 things max including my catalyst control centre. The non microsoft services are all enabled currently there is only 9 all kind of essential to me.
One thing that does effect this is if i do not enter password straight away on boot and leave for few minutes it shaves the startup time down alot which doesnt that point to microsoft services only?I do not overclock, temperatures are always fine too and all windows updates are installed.

i was in Cali for about 4 days so i left my pic on to remote access it from my iPhone (bf3 early beta was about to come out so i wanted to download it before i got back) any ways, when i came back i turned it off for the first time since i left and back on. since them my PC has been taking a lot longer to boot up. it use to take about 2 min, now it takes about 3/4. iv done virus scans with avast, did malwarebytes, i even did a system restore to before i left. nothing came up, so i don't know whats going on. i also randomly had my pc go into sleep mode wile i was on the internet.

My samsung 830 ssd (256 gb) was working excellently and last night for some reason it decided to no longer boot at the nice speed at which it did before. Now I believe it is still performing up to par in the OS environment due to my AS SSD score being 724, although I have not seen many others to compare to.The system originally would boot in a time of 15-16 seconds. however, after this error: The boot time jumped to around 30 seconds. The error occurred yesterday night, and I believe I played around with Samsung's SSD Magician Utility, allowed it to "Optimize" the OS, however I am not sure if this was at the time of the reported error. Here is what I've tried so you may dismiss possible solutions
-Flash Bios
-Update SSD Firmware (was already the Latest)
-Re-Optimize through SSD Magician
-Disable Prefetch and Superfetch in regedit
-Unplug My optical Drive from the SATA3 port
-Unplug the SSD, allow the system to enter bios, turn off, then plug in again, to no avail.
-Lastly I uninstalled SSD Magician hoping that the program was the cause of the error, yet that is a no as well.

I am using this Laptop for a couple of years, and lately I have noticed that it runs quite slow sometimes. While it generally working fine (running new games such as BorderLands 2), other actions such as simply browsing with my Firefox or installing applications can become problematic. The Firefox sometimes gets stuck (happened to me a couple of time while writing this), becomes unresponsive and asks to wait or close. After a short wait, it gets back to normal. The problem with installing is a lot bigger. It takes about 5 minutes for windows to understand that there is a request pending for installation (set so it asks me before installing), and then installs very slowly.

At the beginning of the problem when I booted up my computer, I would check to see if the built-in wi-fi was working. If it wasn't, then it would freeze up at some point (usually soon after) and I was forced to restart. Whenever I booted my computer up and saw this problem, I restarted immediately. If the wi-fi was working, then the computer functioned normally. This was only an occasional problem, so I was able to deal with it by restarting when I found the problem. Then, a couple of weeks ago, my computer automatically forced a hard drive scan upon startup and found 4 corrupted segements on my disk. Next time it booted up, it scanned again and the errors had dissapeared.
Unfortunately, my problem worsened yesterday. When I booted it up, everything has significantly slowed down. It hangs on the Windows screen before I choose my profile, after I choose my profile, when it's loading my profile, and when I perform any task. I tried to start it in Safe Mode and found the same problem. I've found that if I just wait around (usually about 30 minutes), the computer catches up to itself and can perform normally for a while until I start to perform a demanding test. Then it hangs again. Can anyone identify a probable problem? It seems like it is a hardware problem mainly because it isn't an isolated event.

In the past couple of months my win 7 Windows Explorer now takes up to 20 seconds of searching to finally land on the folder selected. This is much slower than it used to be. I guess I'm not at all knowledgeable on what the search process is when one loads Windows Explorer so I don't know where to look for problems. Generally, what things slow the search that Win Explorer goes through to load itself. Would a 3rd party file manager be a better bet rather than a long term investigation to find the problem in my system? I'm a good housekeeper on my machines but something is slowing Win Exp down markedly.

My pc specs are:
[code]...
bought my pc a few days ago. After installing all the drivers I decided to play Splinter Cell Conviction and the graphics ran perfect on max settings with max AA and AF, except the mouse felt like it was delayed a quarter/half second. So basically it became impossible to aim. Decided to try Quake Live - exactly the same, but it got fixed after turning vertical sync off. Checked on world of warcraft, at some areas it's more, at some less intense, but it definitely is there. It feels like the cursor on the screen is delayed half/quarter a second compared to how I move the actual mouse. In world of warcraft there in an option in video settings 'reduce input lag'. When turned on everything is perfect, but fps drops from ~60 to ~40.It's the first time I use windows 7 x64 so I might have missed something, or maybe even installed some wrong/old drivers, or just don't know something.then trying to fix it for the past 2 days. Checked some topics on this forum, but didn't find any fix either. Really could use a hand.

The issue is that all system functions, opening start menu, running control panel, opening folders or running internet explorer run extremely slowly, taking around 5-10 minutes to load or failing completely. Explorer.exe constantly fails and tries to restart. Safe mode seems to work like normal, no speed issues, he has since said it has run slow in safemode (he's not exactly happy right now, and so is snapping at me when i ask him about it so this could be a lie). The CPU is running at 1-2% constantly, i checked performance monitor idle time for it and it is consistantly showing high idle time so it's not like its thrashing. I have limited knowledge of his pc specs, i know he's running a 2.8ghz quad with 8gb ram (speed unknown but i doubt it'll have a relevance). I ran a sfc /scannow but came up with no errors, he doesn't have a restore point set (helpfull much?) and we cannot really access his antivirus effectively due to the whole speed of the system (2 hours before i managed to successfully open event viewer for example) Event viewer shows a number of issues which i will be able to provide more detail about tomorrow morning when he has calmed down a bit. We've tried to run the windows 7 disk however theres not a fix option, i'll be doing manufacturer default restore at some point probably if no solution is found (failing that a format and reinstall maybe?) however im hoping someone online can shed some light on the whole situation, something i've missed maybe. The biggest issue is it being so difficult to try to fix with it taking such a long time to open anything. This is a new custom built pc (from a website) and im assuming the components themselves are ok, (cpu or hdd broken and it wouldn't start, same with ram but im assuming a warning would of shown, and unless he's lost 7gb in one go i doubt it would show much performance decrease...) the system seems cool enough from general feeling around it, cold air being sucked in and blown out (obviously while idle but even so).

My laptop has suddenly slowed down considerably. I've run eset online scanner and scanned with my antivirus Trend Micro Titanium and found nothing at all. I've tried running Ccleaner and using the registry cleaner. I've also tried defragmenting my hdd but nothing is working. Overall its is generally slow but alot of the time Windows explorer freezes and stops responding and needs restarting.I have an asus K55VD notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1, quad core i7 processor, 8gb ram, 2gb dedicated graphics and over 200gb of free space on my hdd. If it makes any difference I have windows 8 installed on a separate partition although problems didn't start when I installed it.

Today when I was surfing on my laptop (G74S Series) I wanted to restart the laptop because the internet crashed and it usually helps to restart. But I restarted it holding down the power button thing. So, I restarted it and while I was waiting, staring in to the screen, the blinking "_" thing when you start up was doing that for a while and nothing was happening, and a couple of seconds later the computer tells me that it can't boot the laptop/pc because no drive was found. I saw an error code but I didn't catch it, but it was something like "0x0000".So then on later, it sent me in to "Image Restore" But I have no image to restore with, so I cancel it, and then it sends me into the menu where. I can choose to "Restore Computer" or "Scan for startup errors" or something like that (I don't really have a such accurate memory.)And on the top it also says "os unknown on (unknown) local disk".Everytime I start the computer it sends me to that menu where I can choose to restore my computer etc..And I can't really do much about it since I don't have the windows 7 disc/dvd thing either. And this all came all so sudden I don't really know what to do.I don't have any backu or anything, and windows can only detect my /D: drive and not /C:, and I have my OS on /C/

I bought the Razer Lycosa tonight and plugged it in looking forward to using it but upon loading the computer my bios has gone so slow i see each letter as if it's being typed out and cannot load windows.I have plugged in another keyboard and managed to open my BIOS (blue menu bit). I'm not technical really I just liked the look of the keyboard. I think it's a software related issue?Above all I need my computer back working but has anyone come across this before?I noticed I had some windows updates recently and also read a similar thread of which I can no longer find on this web site.

In recent days, my computer extremely slowed down. A few months back, it started booting up really slow but I didn't mind it. It was working well, although if you opened a program too quickly before the system started, it would freeze. The fan is running full speed 100% when the computer is on. I ran Malware in safe mode, found one threat but didn't work. I tried services, turned them all off, didn't work.
One important thing to mention is that I can't type anything in explorer. If I open Menu Start and try to search for something, it will freeze. Same in explorer window. I can't delete a file with the DELETE key, I can't use CTRL+C, CTRL+V because explorer freezes. Right click works, though. I'm working on MSI FX603 laptop with i5 Intel Core, GeForce 425M and 4GB Ram. I just updated Graphics, Network drivers. No luck.

I am having a confusing time trying to figure out why my internet went from 10+ Mbps down to <1 Mbps after simply downloading a wireless card driver. From the beginning: My wireless download speed was 10+Mbps, and I was using the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card. This information is found in the Device Manager, under "Network".The driver for the card was 5.30.x.y (I can't remember the specific version number, but I do remember it was 5.30.something.something). Upon navigating to the Dell webpage, I wanted to see if there were any drivers for the same wireless card that were more updated, to perhaps increase performance.I navigated to the page for my computer (Dell Latitude D830), here. That page is for my model laptop. You'll notice that, in the drop down for "Operating System", there is no option to select Windows 7.Regardless, I navigated to the driver under "Network", the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card, and downloaded it. It was version 5.60.188.1, from 11/9/2009. This is where my problem began. After installing the driver and rebooting, my internet speed instantly went to below 1 Mbps. I have no clue why installing a later wireless card driver would mess up my speed.
My only hypothesis is that the driver I downloaded is only compatible with Vista. Do I just re-download driver version 5.30.x.y or something to get it back? Why did it get so slow? How do I get my computer back to the download speed it was/should be?

A friend shipped me a used computer. During shipment a wire had come off the main HD. I did try to start the machine without knowing the wire was off. I got the "bootdevice" message. After talking with my friend I found and replaced the wire. I tried doing a "repair" using F8 but no luck. I can however use the option to "start my computer using the last known etc." Everything works fine, but when I shut the machine off I get the "can't find bootdevice" again when I restart. What do I have to change in my bios settings to make the machine boot normally?

I decided to Dual boot Hackintosh (iDeneb) and Windows 7 on my HP laptop. I got OS X up and running and I can't seem to repair my Windows 7. The installation disk can't find and fix the problem automatically, so I went to Command line prompt and when I type it Bootrec.exe/scanOS is says that it can't find any installed windows on the disks. I am 100% sure I did not over write my windows partition with the OS X and honestly, I have no idea how to get Windows running again without having to install from scratch.

I am currently using windows 7 ultimate x64. I was in the middle of a process restoring my computer to a few days back and suddenly it froze. I did a power shut down and when I turned it back on, I wasn't able to get back into windows. I was brought to startup repair and it gave me errors. 'Boot manager failed to find OS loader'. There was options for restoring, but all my restore points were gone. Recovery wasn't able to find image backup.
"Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically". I was told to go into safe mode to restore, but whenever I enter safe mode, startup repair would take over and shows the same errors, also I read a tutorial using a repair disc ( made a copy of it on someone elses ultimate x64 computer) and I get the 0x00000e9 error if i boot from disc. What can I do? As of now I don't have the installation disc with me. I wont be able to get hold of it until tomorrow. There's a lot of important files in that hard drive and I really cant lose any.

When I go through the startup repair and do the command prompt method, when I enter bcdedit I get the message "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified"When I do bootrec.exe /fixboot it give me this. "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded an that the volume is not corrupted" /fixmbr says that it completes successfully btw.

2.Subsequently I made the locker invisible using "Folder Protect" software.
3.When I was trying to add more files to the locker created in 1 the locker tried to "increase it's size on the run"...
4.This process failed and "Folder Lock" shut down and since then I cannot locate the locker anymore on my PC nor can I see it in "Folder Protect"
5.Having read on a forum, I uninstalled "Folder Protect" and reinstalled...but that did not help..I still could not find the Locker.
6.I even uninstalled and reinstalled "Folder Lock"...even this did not help
7.I understand the lockers created by "Folder Lock" are UNDELETABLE.
8.Clearly my locker is somewhere on my hard disk but I am unable to locate it.

I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least.I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu.
