Desktop Showing Either The Desktop Or An Application But Not Both?
Nov 30, 2011I am encountering an interesting problem in which windows 7 shows either a software application and a bare desktop backgroup with no intereaction or the full desktop backgrouond with no applications shown only files, links etc.

Dec 16, 2012I, in my infinite computer wisdom, somehow managed to change my desktop shortcuts, and now their icons look like blank pages, and when I click on them they open the "open with" box.Is it possible to fix this? If so, would the fix take longer than just reinstalling the OS and all the programs (lots and lots of hours)?

Oct 26, 2011Our office has an old program that we still need to use when upgrading our PC's to Windows 7. The program will run fine if you start a windows virtual PC and install and run it. However, based on the needs of our office, I need to be able to run Windows XP mode and simply have an icon for our users to click to take them to the application.If I install the program in windows XP mode, and then add a shortcut to the file under all users/start menu, a shortcut is placed in the appropriate place on the windows 7 machine and I can copy that shortcut ot the desktop. The program runs fine until you restart the computer. Once you restart the computer and double click the link on the windows 7 desktop to the program running in windows XP mode, it says:
Cannot start virtual application. The application is blocked from running as a virtual application.
I read some other posts saying to put a new shortcut in the all users/start menu folder. This works, but only until our users restart their computer. The next time the computer is up, the problem happens again. This is not an acceptable solution to have to create a new shortcut for each workstation each time the computer is restarted.

Click OK to close the application.When I click OK, i just have a black screen. I can get the task manager going by hitting control, alt, delete. I've tried to start explorer.exe from the file menu, but get the same error.

I am deathly afraid to turn off my computer because my brother recently did and that caused it to freeze at the blue HP startup screen, but thats another thread. I get this error whenever I launch anything. I can't even open up the task manager. I really need help. I don't currently have a way to back up my stuff either but I am working on it. By the way, I don't know that my brother was having the same error message as i was or if he was having any error messages. I use zone alarm full security suite if that helps at all, I don't know if it deleted a registry file or something.

Aug 15, 2010I tried to replace 3 files in the system 32 folder, and must have made a mistake along the way leaving my laptop inaccessible once logged on. The three files were:

I received these error messaged when logged on:dwm.exe - Application error the application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Nov 25, 2011I don't what happened but all of a sudden a message box opens up on my windows 7 laptop and it says this " the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application" . I clicked ok but the error message box keeps returning back.If i remember properly, this happened when I tried installing some wallpaper.system seems to be working finw with all applications, but this message box is quite annoying.

I also run several different applications at once and occasionally Skype. I'm CONSTANTLY hitting the 32-bit barrier for RAM (can't remember if it's 3.1, 3.2 or 3.3 GB) and I still have more RAM on my system. I'm thinking the video quality on Skype starts going south when I run low/out on addressable memory since it's a 32-bit application

Aug 5, 2011I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been using it for some time without problems, but this morning I was unable to get on the Internet. Yesterday I'd installed an update for ZoneAlarm which I thought was probably the problem, so I uninstalled in and downloaded and installed PC Tools Firewall Plus instead. no my computer will connect to the Internet OK, but whenever I try to open most programs, I get the following error:"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."The only two exceptions I've found are Microsoft Security Essentials and Internet Explorer which both work fine.

Oct 26, 2011When I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop.But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?
