All Maximized Windows Show Upper Portion Of Desktop Above Menu Bar?
Jan 11, 2012
Seen several different posts about this issue but really no definitive answer as to why is occurring. Never happened with XP or Vista only Windows 7. Seems most users with this issue report having a Dell computer but mine is a Toshiba Satellite L505. I just find it very annoying to have approximately half inch of desktop space visible on top of any type maximized window, browser window, explorer window, whatever.
I'm used to W7 remembering the last known positions of all of my open windows, but lately (and I can't recall what change may have prompted this) every window opens in a maximized state, and upon restoring it, always sizes down to the default window size, jammed right into the upper-left corner of the screen.
We are using some Lenovo Q180's as media players for digital signage. For the most part they have all been working fine except for 2. Randomly, the signage presentation will re-size itself and move into the upper left corner. This happens randomly and not at the same times each day. They are hooked up to a LED tv via HDMI. I have tried switching the HDMI cables, ensuring all drivers are current and tried most all the basic troubleshooting. A simple re-start will get everything back looking and running fine. Again, this is a digital signage application so we cannot tell if this has occurred until the client calls to let us know which is not good for us.
I accidentally installed 32 bit windows 7 on my pc earlier today. As such, I've been trying to do a clean install of the 64 bit from the windows 7 OEM disk.I seem to be running into a problem though, once the computer boots from the Windows 7 disk nothing happens. I get the load bar for "windows is verifying files" (not sure if that's what it is exactly, but it's something like that.)After the load is done, the generic startup/shutdown screen for Windows 7 shows up, the pointer switches over to show me it's busy for about 3 seconds, then nothing else happens. I tried waiting ~10 minutes and still, nothing happens.
DVD drive {D:} stopped showing in menu. Deleted upper & lower from registry as suggested. Rebooted, etc. etc. Did a system recovery back to when it did work - still N/G.
I'm just migrating over to Windows 7, and am having a hard time with the start menu. I've downloaded Classic Shell so the menu looks like XP again, but I noticed that when I look at 'all programs' some of my programs aren't there. Turns out Windows 7 has two program folders, apparently one is for purely 64-bit programs and the other for ones that still use 32-bit. Does anyone know how I can get both of these folders to show up in the start menu, preferably combined? At the moment, I can only find the 64-bit folder, and can't find the 32-bit folder in the start menu at all.
I would like to know if is possible to show All Programs in the start menu automatically when you click the orb. Because clicking every time to show the list of All Programs is not very nice since I don't use the recently programs open function.
for some reason when I go to start menu properties, and customize, the Music shortcut is ticked to be displayed as link but it's not showing up. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
A while back I used a few different programs to tweak Windows 7. One of the programs I used caused the recently used programs to stop showing up in the star menu. Under properties now I can't even set the number of programs to show because it is grayed out and unselectable. Any body know how to get this function back? I have ran SFC to see if there was something corrupt in Windows 7 with no errors returned. I think there is something turned off in the registry but have no idea where to look.
i would like to know if it is possible to change the behavior of show desktop button in the lower right from its default winkey+d and change its behavior to be similar to winkey+mi always use the show desktop button however im using a rocketdock and pressing the show desktop button will also minimize the rocketdock
I am running Windows 7 premium. The taskbar/notification/clock area @ the bottom of my desktop is huge, like nearly an inch. The Time, Day and Date are one below the other. This takes up so much space especially when u have multiple toolbars, address bar etc @ the top not 2 mention the additional loss of space (of nothingness) @ the top. Leaves less working space than I'm happy with. How do I gain back the use of that half inch in the taskbar? Is it possible 2 gain back the lost area @ the top as well?.I have already gone to Properties and changed the settings there (use small icons). It made no difference at all.
This morning I powered the computer following the Christmas break (Windows 7 64 bit). The screen displayed the backgorund colour only, not a black screen. There was no desktop, icons or start menu. The keyboard did not function; could not start Task Manager. Pressed the Windows key + f5; no response. Pointer shows and moves with mouse but no mouse functionality.
I rebooted in safe mode and the system was restored with limited Safe Mode functionality. I ran ESET virus scan; no viruses found. I rebooted; no change. I attempted to do a System Restore to earlier this morning prior to a Windows update install dated 2012-12-26: 729 EST. No change. I attempted to restore to an earlier restore point last week; no change. I am currently running CHKDSK /R in order to verify that there are no disk problems. I have all data files backed up but do not have a disk image.
I cannot download TSG SysInfo until I get the desktop back.
I have been experiencing same problem in the link above and on both my laptop and my desktop,,,,both of them have same windows 7 ultimate 64 bitWhen I download any file to the desktop I am not able to see it unless I browse to the path C:UsersjohnDesktop,,,,then I would be able to see that file
My windows is minimizing the programs that im using. Well not exactly minimizing but sort of putting it back to desktop. I tried to install the windows again but whit no results. it's doing it again. I cant even write my documents in word properly because of this.
bought a dell touchscreen inspiron one 2320, thought it would be better than my two year old dell (don't see it yet). i am an average user and i am not impressed. anyway the question is why does the monitor go black after 1 minute? i have done all the normal stuff in power options. change power saving settings, change when the computer sleeps. choose when to turn off display. turn hibernation on or off. i upload to Internet and it the shutting down makes it frustrating....
On not so infrequent occasion, my Start Menu and Desktop, without warning, will suddenly experience the equivalent of an epileptic seizure. The Start Menu will start flickering really fast and windows will be slightly moved, resized or closedhe episode will occur for maybe 10 - 20 seconds and then the fireworks stopAfterwards, the fallout may result in some applications/windows that still remain open, they may (but not always) no longer respond to mouse clicks.o be honest, I'm having difficulty figuring out what triggers this event. The best I can gather it happens when I move the mouse (nearby?) to click the Start Menu, but am not absolutely sure. It does not always happen and when it does, it occurs super fast and I lose complete control until this wacky (and very disruptive) behavior stops.I searched google and could not find this problem documented. I am using Window 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, with the latest updates. My computer is a Dell Dimension 8300 (old), which means I am using a generic settings which include the mouse driver and video display (no Aero). The Windows Event logs do not reveal anything of interest. I have no security issues either - no viruses and spyware. Simplifying troubleshooting

My desktop icons disappear on my new hp. If I leave the screen up for various amounts of time, the start menu and desktop icons disappear and my wallpaper is the only thing i see on my screen. It will not give me the chance to alt cntrl delete, I can right click but it only gives me the breifcase options. I was on the phone with hp,. they remotely accessed, saw nothing wrong. I took back the other computer, and now my new one is doing the same thing. I hate to turn off the computer by pushing the button, especially when Im trying to keep my new computer working properly. Has anyone had this issue? Can I changed a setting? Obviously it happened on the same type of computer twice.
After restart, Lenovo Windows 7 home basic just shows a colour Window 7 logo screen and does not show desktop even after clicking on anywhere on the screen?
I downloaded RocketDock and I'm having some issues with it while using "Show the Desktop." Whenever I click it, the Dock disappears because the OS considers it like every other program and minimizes it since its blocking the desktop. Is there any way to get it so that clicking "Show the Desktop" won't minimize RocketDock, much in the same way that sidebar is still kept on the screen? Currently, the only way I can use the dock is by minimizing any windows blocking it so that I don't need to click "Show the Desktop" which makes it disppear.
When I had Vista 64 bit before I upgraded to Windows 7 home prof., I could see what was on my monitor for the computer so I could watch a movie and just turn the speakers closer. Now after much experimentation, it will only show the background, no icons movies etc. on vga or the hdmi connection I just connected to my tv and the back of the computer!how to get me desktop's exact display over to my tv as well.

When I save this as show.scf it is react just like Win+D hotkey. But I want to create win+M hotkey's shortcut. If it possible to make this shortcut, when you click on it it must Minimize all windows by effect. And I want to sort folders by myself, for example: I have folder A, B, C, D and I want to sort them not by alphabet or by size.. I should able to put folder D after A, I cant drag them.
I'm new here, and I registered because I wanted to ask; Is it possible to make the "Show Desktop" button smaller? The problem is, when I re-installed windows on my laptop, that button is bigger than usual >.< , and It just looks ugly.
Here's an image, the top picture is my current taskbar, and the bottom one is how it used to be:
I have made a slide show of our recent holiday, the pictures of which are now all on a DVD Disc. I now want to take copies of these pictures to make prints. Rather stupidly, I reformatted my camera CF Card so do not have the originals.
