I have noticed that in the "all programs" portion of start menu that the appearance of the program folders is not uniform. Some of mine are highlighted wtih an orange horizontal band. Does any know why that is. I cannot figure out how to get rid of it.

If i use Windows explorer to navigate to the Startup folder, I am told I do not have authority to access it (I am the administrator and only account on the system). View 4 Replies View RelatedI have this backup software (GENIE9) that doesn't work. The vendor tell me I have to deletesome files that are in C:users/programs/appdata. The problem is: even though I am the administrator, I cannot even view what is in that folder, much less delete any files withinit.The vendor (GENIE9) is totally clueless as to how to do this.Apparently the operating system has put some severe restrictions on this folder even for users that are administrators.

Even though I have Tools/Options set to have downloads go directly to Program Files, I've discovered that my downloads are going to the old Program Files (x86) folder, e.g., I just download Secunia PSI and when opened in Program Files, the old version was there but the new version 3.0 is in PF (x86). I tried to cut and paste it to PF but it didn't work. I have a download Firefox extension, Download Status Bar, that I really like; it works great.I know that some programs in 64 bit need the old 32 bit version trom PF (x86) to work but I'd like to delete PF (x86).
View 2 Replies View RelatedBefore installing Windows 7 on my (hitherto Vista) VAIO I effected a full backup on an external hard drive.
I then installed Windows 7 and noticed all my program files were missing. When I went into the Windows.old folder I was able to see a good deal of them, seemingly most of those that I had installed myself, such as iTunes, 7Zip, etc.
The programs that were already installed on the VAIO when I bought it from the VAIO store, however, were absent. For example the whole Sony Recovery tool program, Adode Photoshop and others.
When I connected the hard drive to the laptop I was able to see the backup I had done just before Windows 7 installation but when I tried to expand the folder down (hoping to see 'Program Files') I only saw a series of strange looking (albeit large) files that didn't mean very much.
Presumably this is the way in which my backup was encrypted or stored, but is there a way in which I can access the individual programs from the hard drive so that I can put them back on my laptop?
I was able to find all my music, videos and documents in the Windows.old folder, and have restored them, but the missing programs worry me. Also the amount of free space on the laptop is identical now to when I still had Vista on there, making me think that perhaps the 'missing' programs haven't been deleted at all but may just be hiding somewhere in the 'Windows.old' folder. But I could well be wrong about that.
I like listening to an online radio station (through Windows Media Player) every time I use my computer. So, I put a shortcut to the playlist file in my Startup folder.But, even though I selected "Run: Minimized" in its Properties dialog box, it always runs in a normal window. View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded some photos from my SD card to a folder in Windows Explorer on an HP laptop running Windows 7. The files/photos are definitely on the hard drive and I can view them with the Picasa Photo Viewer (they're in Nikon's raw format, NEF).However, when I open both Picasa and Nikon's Capture NX2 to edit and convert to JPEG's, neither program recognizes the folder I saved the photos to. The new folder is not in the list of folders in the My Pictures library.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..

This is due to an overheat problem I have been experiancing since my Win 7 upgrade.I have created a new user account that I would like to run an application really smoothly so have taken some performance tweek advice and turned off the aero peak function, and most of the fancy visual apperance settings, set some services to manual and assumed it would only apply these settings for the current user, but it applies the settings to all users registered on the computer.Is it possible to set up two (or more) different accounts so one could have all the default features and visual apperance settings as standard (for email, Web browsing, media centre, gadgets, all that nice stuff), and onther user account be bare bones, no nice graphics and visuals, less defautl services but run high demand programs better?

And all my files recognize as virus. I just think in that time maybe I install bad program and in there is virus. I remember that virus was: $e. So I just done mistake and delete them. After that I open folder and all my photos and documents was damage.
Kaspersky not have option BackUp my deleted virus. I try Restore point and no luck. So what I use Recovery programs. I try 3. But only from one I get files back. So my question is, can I recover my files with program or with other option? Or This is it and I not have any option recover? Here is one photo how look recovered files. And two files I give in here.
if this BSOD is anything for me to be concerned about. OS is Win 7 Pro x64 and the laptop is a HP 8740W. The system is rock solid as far as I know (it's stress-tested very often) and this is the first BSOD I've managed to get out of it. Win 7 was freshly installed around 2 weeks ago on the system and everything was updated. When the BSOD occurred I wasn't really doing anything except changing the Windows Appearance settings.I didn't manage to grab what it said on the BSOD screen except Win32k.sys.

The transparent mouse selection thingy when you drag your mouse on the desktop is the normal Windows XP/Basic one where it's just the dotted line. Also, the desktop wallpaper slide show doesn't fade into each picture it just does a quick switch. In my office, some of our users are having a very strange problem. Every now and again, a users documents and desktop shortcuts go transparent and have a little cross on them and cannot be opened. The only fix we have at present is to restart the PC.
The documents and shorcuts point to items that are on a mapped network drives. Not all of the documents go like this, only certain ones. There are no certain users or documents that this happens too, its completely random.

How can I disable this as I have looked at the user controls & everything else I could remember to check & every time I reboot or boot up it goes to the user login screen which I only need to click because I don't use a password.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have recently been granted admin rights on my work computer.While the computer was locked down, the Aero visual effects were set to "adjust for best performance".I can change it to "adjust for best appearance" and the Aero effects appear - until I reboot the computer. After the reboot, the checkbox is still set to "adjust for best appearance" however, the effects are disabled. I have to change the setting, change it back to best appearance and hit OK. Then everything works again.The friend in IT who granted the admin rights told me that this is due to the group policy our company has set up - and that there is nothing he can do about it.I have checked gpedit and regedit but could not find any relevant entries.Do you have any idea how I could automagically adjust the settings back to best appearance after every reboot? I was thinking that if I cannot turn of the group policy myself, then maybe I could write some sort of script that changes to appearance settings for me (instead of me having to do it manually every time).
