Adding An Account Password?
Aug 28, 2010
My Windows 7 account has been set up without a password. If I try to add one, there are warning messages that I may lose stored passwords and something called EFS.Can I ignore these and add a password to the account?

I followed the procedure found on the web, I entered "netplwiz" and did unchecksers must enter a user name and password to use this computer". There is no password setTHere is just one user/account which is obviously also the administrator. (the Account tab shows also HomeGroupUser$, but I guess is a default option...)the point is that when I switch the pc on, I have to click on the icon of the user account in order to see the desktop. Is there any chance I can login automatically without even clicking on the user icon

I am running a dual-boot setup of Windows 7 Ultimate, one x64 and the other x86 (the 32-bit one is there mostly for when I face compatibility issues, since my system has 4GB of RAM and it came pre-installed with the 64-bit version). My primary partition runs the x64 version, which is my main OS, but I am facing a really annoying glitch with my user name at the welcome screen. In the 32 bit boot, the welcome screen loads and my account picture is shown maximized and the password box is already highlighted, so all I need to do is enter the password and I am good to log in. However, the 64 bit boot loads with my account picture minimized (as if there was another account available), and I have to click on it or press the Space bar to get it to show me the password box so I can log in. This wouldn't bother me normally, but I just recently did a clean install of both boot configs and it has only been since then that this has been a problem. Previously, my 64-bit welcome screen would load normally and I wouldn't have to select the account manually.
I have spent countless hours online trying to find a solution to this problem, and I have still not been able to do so. The only difference between the two configurations is that I connected to my local HomeGroup with the 64-bit OS, and I have since left it and disabled the associated services, but I have not been able to restore the default login screen. I can't remember if this issue existed before I joined this HomeGroup or not, so I don't even want to restore my computer that far back in case that wasn't the problem.

I have a windows 7 ultimate edition 32 bit and linux mint 11 Katya on dual boot, I forgot my password for the only user account on windows 7 and that account was an administrator, unfortunately, i never created the password reset disk, after trying for a day or 2 to figure the password out, i started using mint to my advantage, i downloaded and installed a tool called "Chntpw", it's supposed to remove the password entirely or change it and it's able to unlock locked accounts like the guest account, i used the following command after changing the directory to my Windows/System32/config:
Sudo chntpw -u <myusername> sam
for some reason my SAM file is in lower case letters, anyways after using that to remove the password on my account, it says it was successful and i saved it and even checked it again and it says that it no longer requires a password, but when i rebooted my pc into windows 7, it still asked for a password, and after trying to a few other things like unlocking the administrator and guest accounts, 3 things happened: my account's profile picture changed, the password hint i typed disappeared and switch user option appeared, i tried using it but it for administrator it requires a password even though chntpw says it doesn't, and for the guest account it says that the method i'm using to log in isn't allowed.so i'm basically stuck out of my windows 7, and i'm doing my best to avoid a reinstall cuz my windows installation is 2.5 years old and it's working real fine and has alot programs, personal data and drivers installed.

I'm trying to learn a little about how Win 7 works...so I'm starting from scratch, so-to-speak.What I've done thus far & what info I am seeking:I've looked at all the tutorials I can find here on the BC site and even tried typing a query in the search box, but have been unable to find any instructions which explain how to create a password for the Windows 7 default Administrator account (or even a separately-created Administrator account).(The tutorials I have already reviewed indicate the Win 7 default Administrator account is by default...disabled (on a new computer, I'm guessing), and after going through the multi-step process of enabling the Admin account, it is recommended the user secure the account with a strong password).

I have two machines that I've installed Windows 7 Professional 32-bit on and I'm having the same problem on both. When I turn on my computer it goes to the login welcome screen and stops. I have to click on my picture for it to continue logging into the desktop. I have no password and only one admin account set up on either one.
I tried setting up the auto login using netplwiz in the search bar but it doesn't do anything. I set up a password and set up the autologin and it didn't work on either machine. So now I'm back to no password and in need of help. Anyone got any ideas?

have had this problem for a while now and any help would be greatly appreciated. Essentially I cannot install anything, as it requires User Account Control verification, but the password field for the admin pass does not show up, so the only option each time is to click 'No' and cancel the installation. I assume this is because there is no admin password set. I tried for a long while previously, I have tried to enter using safe mode and try and disable UAC, yet when doing so the UAC actually pops up in sade mode without the pass field again. I have also tried using Offline NT Registor and Password Editor to create a new pass for the admin, yet no luck as the admin afterwards doesn't require a pass nor does the pass field in the UAC show.

I just noticed two of my computers are automatically sharing the entire user's directory with all permissions for everyone, I was reading up on this a bit before and it seems it's a Windows bug. I was wondering, since the password protected sharing is turned on by default, would anyone have been able to gain access to my computers information if they didn't have a user account / password or would they need an account / password no matter what the permissions are set to.

I have 2 admin accounts on my PC. When I try to install a software from my 2nd admin account, it asks me for the password of the 1st admin account. But when I go to install the software in my 1st admin account, it doesn't ask for a password. My 2nd admin account was initially a normal user account, but because it kept on asking for a password each time I wanted to install a software, I upgraded it to an admin account. Yet it still asks for a password!

I'm trying to backup the pictures, music, and videos that are saved on my buddies laptop. He forgot the password for the main account and whenever I try to transfer files to an external hard drive, a screen pops up and tells me to it cannot transfer files without password. Is there anyway to get around this? EDIT: I thought maybe it would be important to add that the account that I'm using to get access to the files must not have permissions to change anything on the computer. Don't ask me how my friend figured out how to restrict himself from changing anything on the computer, but he did and this general lack of knowledge about computers, likely got in into the trouble, that now is going to require me to do a full restore.

When I try to start up Windows normally, I type in my password for the user account and then it just freezes, it doesn't load. So I think, okay, I'll just try to start up it in Safe Mode, no problem. But when I try to start it in Safe Mode the computer freezes at classpnp.sys and doesn't continue. I'm at a loss about what to do.
My computer is a Gateway Desktop, running Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit), intel premium processor, 1 TB hard drive, 6 GB DDR3 memory. I tried using the "Last Known Good Config" option, to no avail. I got the "Replacing invalid security ID" message. I let that go for about an hour when I stopped it, as it was going nowhere. If it makes any difference, I have also installed another operating system (Ubuntu).

Sitting here in class and our professor was telling us admin it disabled by default in Vista/Windows 7 now for security reasons. I mentioned you can access it from a command prompt based program that comes in a bootable iso format you burn on disc.
I can not for the life of me remember what the name of that program was but a couple years ago I was working on a Win Vista system that got a virus that locked out the user by changing the user account passwords.
We Googled, found this program you burn on a CD and it brings up a menu that will allow you to reset the user account password, or log into the admin account.
