Accidentally Shutdown Laptop During Windows 7 Update
Feb 16, 2012
New laptop, it was shut down or closed during the update and now is frozen on the 7 of 8 screen and just hangs there. I cannot reboot and it did not come with a recovery disk. I can't get it to come off this screen at all. I tried shutting it off but an orange light flashes and when I turn it back on it's still on that screen. Since I have no recovery cd or repair CD what do I need to do? If I have to restore I really could care less as I don't have too much on it because it's new. Maybe some photos but whatever.

I tried to shut down my laptop, the "Installing update, do not shut down or power off your computer" screen appears but my battery died during the update. And now when I startup the "Launch start up repair" appears and when i click it, I get stuck on a blue flower wallpaper screen thing and nothing appears. All i can see is the wallpaper and the mouse cursor.

I have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.

Yesterday I received a text message from my aunt stating that something is wrong with her computer.I built her computer a few months ago and everything has been going fine until now. She stated that her computer was updating and stuck at 30% "all day" so she shut it down in the middle of it. When she turned it back on she said that all of her emails from march until july are missing. I mainly think that any problem with her computer is caused by the fact that she never shuts it down. Since the day that I built it, I have always told her to shut it down when she is not using it. I asked my cousin how many times a week she shuts down her PC and he told me, if I am lucky, twice a month. From what I know, she has Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit and is using Thunderbird as an email client. She shut down her computer while windows was updating itself and is now missing important emails from March to July. After asking her to check her email providers website, she stated that none of the emails are there either.

Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed. It just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer. It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.

I just got a new computer, and was on the process of transferring my files from my old computer using Windows Easy Transfer. It was taking a while so I left it on overnight. When I checked on it again, it had reboot to install windows updates. Now, I've got a folder in my Users section that apparently weights 0 bytes, but that is taking up easily 100 GB, which I also cannot access; for trying to do so leaves me with the same explorer window, and unable to return using the address bar or the back arrow. Is there anything I can do about it?

I just installed a retail copy of win 7 on my laptop and have been experiencing some issues. At first everything worked fine but out of the blue my desktop/folders have not been auto-refreshing. Whenever I try to delete or create a new folder I have to manually refresh to the folder in order to view it. When shutting down my laptop it takes 5+ minutes and when my desktop is loading after booting up the laptop it takes several minutes for everything to load and for the win 7 chime.
Finally, it won't allow me to update. When I try to use the windows updater it hangs for a while on "creating restoring point" (which may be normal) but then permanently hangs on installing update 1/16 at 0%. If I try canceling the update nothing happens and even when I try to shut down the laptop it attempts to install the updates but hangs on update 1/16.
From researching these issues I've realized that the auto-refresh problem is not uncommon and has something to do with a network. This may be unrelated but these problems only started to occur when I was transferring pictures via a USB stick.

I have an HP Laptop model 6735b with an AMD Turion DualCore ZM-84 Mobile processor and 2GB of RAM. I purchased it in January 2009 and installed windows XP on it, which I had no problems with. I recently installed Windows 7 on it, and it will not power down or go into hibernate mode without being on external power. When I tell it to hibernate or shut down it will power the screen down, but thats as far as it will go without being plugged in. All of the lights stay on (volume control buttons, wifi indicator, etc.), the hard drive continues to run, and it will stay like this until I plug it in, at which point it will finish its power-down or hibernation.

I have a desktop pc with win 7 x64. But it won't shutdown after a window update from Microsoft. This has been going on for about a month now. I have searched everywhere I know of with no success to a null the issue. When I go to start and press shutdown it will go to the shutdown screen and the little white round circle is spinning but will just sit there for EVER! I have to hold my power button in for 5 seconds, then it will shut off. BUT then to start up it says that windows didn't shut down correctly and will do a scan check if I let it (which I have several times). I'm concerned because some caching files and some others have been corrupt until I let it run the scan check then it will be ok. I need my pc. I have tried clean boot, in safe mode, everything, still it will not shut down unless I hold the button in for 5 seconds. I have a dual boot system with win xp that I play a game on. That os will shut down correctly.

I have a ASUS Laptop with Intel I3 processer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I recently had a forced shutdown during a Windows upgrade session. Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

My Acer Aspire S3-951 laptop has a few shutdown issues. It will not shutdown or restart, without manually holding down the power button. Windows seems to be shutting down, and then the screen goes black but the laptop is still running. Restart does not work unless i've installed something that requires a restart. It will not restart if i choose the option from the shutdown menu. I've tried to update all my drivers and i also updated the BIOS, with no luck. I have also tried to do a clean boot and uninstalling some programs that might be causing this.[CODE]

This problem started a few days ago. Whenever I close my laptop, the computer shuts down. I've done the obvious and checked the settings for sleep, hibernate and shutdown on lid close, but those are all set to sleep, not shutdown. As you might imagine, this issue is a real hassle. I've been losing work and spending far too long on start up time with this.
The laptop itself is an hp pavilion dv4, if that might have anything to do with it.

I was installing SP1 on a recently purchased laptop (Acer Aspire 5742) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Installation was done via Windows Update and was reported successful. On subsequent required reboot, however, the system just hang, at shutdown screen. Some half a day has passed already and I wonder what now, whether I should go for a hard reset and force turning it off, and what would be the proper way to do that, in hope to cause the least damage, both to Windows and the SP install and even the hardware eventually?... I've tried already hitting the power button, even for some more than a couple seconds, but it didn't go off and I admit I became afraid of persisting on that... I've also already read about having to hold the power button for actually some 60 seconds..

For the past few days Windows refuses to shutdown. Everytime I select the sleep, hibernate or shutdown options it will reboot/reawaken straight away. I have tested the RAM which had no problems, I reinstalled Windows completely which didn't help & I checked power settings in BIOS to disable auto-restart. Laptop works fine when on, just refuses to power down - only holding the power button will get it to stop doing anything!

I recently bought a new Dell Inspiron M5010, and it came with Windows 7 home Premium. I am the first owner of this computer. However, I keep getting this flag that says that it can't update my computer, then... If I go into the control pannel, it says that my firewall is on. However, the flag says that it isn't. I click on it, and hit the turn on button... Nothing happens... And Internet explorer 8 says that it stopped working prooperly.... If I restart my computer the flags go away for a while, but if it is on for a couple of hours, the flags come back up... I have the Mc Afee antivirus... I have Norton as well, but was waiting until my free trial that came with the computer to end to install it... I understand basic computer concepts..

I just bought an ASUS Zenbook UX32A, it has an SSD 32 and SATA 500, I deleted the recovery and did a clean install of Windows 7 on the SSD (originally win was on the SATA) and I uploaded all the drivers and did some windows updates. the laptop will randomly shutdown once a week or every two weeks, and the boot order will get switched to the SATA. Obviously i will get an error "windows cant boot" etc. I have to manually go in bios and switch it back to the SSD.I scanned the computer with Avast and did the boot scanner, 100% clean
