64-bit Windows 7 Randomly Sleeps?

Sep 22, 2012

I've been having issues lately with my computer "randomly" sleeping - I feel, however, that it's not so random.Currently I'm running an Asus G73JH, Pre-Sandy Bridge i7, 12GB RAM.The event log entry for the issue is as follows - and the main thing I'm wondering is what "Reason: 4" translates to.Spoiler :

Windows 7 Shuts Off / Sleeps Itself

Apr 27, 2010

I tried google'ing for this but I'm not sure how to word it, This is what happens: I could be doing whatever on my computer, then once in a while, randomly shuts itself off; but not completely. My monitor goes into DVI power saving mode (like when the computer sleeps), keyboard / mouse shut off, my external soundcard is un-synced, but the fans are all running. It restarted itself the first time after about 10 minutes, but every time after that I was too impatient to wait.

Monitor Sleeps But Computer Won't (At Least Not Automatically)

Aug 12, 2011

My ASUS P8Z68-Vpro Windows 7(64) system will go to sleep manually (from the shutdown menu). I have power management set to turn off the monitor and go to sleep after one minute. After a minute the monitor turns off, but the computer fan keeps on going. (What used to happen is the computer would go to sleep, the fan would turn off, but then a second or two later the computer would wake up by itself. It's possible this has changed because I'm playing with various settings). In any event, I have never gotten it to go to sleep on its own and stay there.

Even when I tell it to go to sleep manually on rare occasions it has also woken up unprovoked. On the local area connection (Intel 82579) I've turned off all wake up things (Wake on lan, wake on link, etc.) I've allowed windows to sleep even when sharing multimedia. I've turned off wake on USB. The keyboard and mouse are now the only devices in the device manager that claim to have the ability to wake the computer up. I suspect the problem may be the D-Link DWA-556 wireless card (PCI slot), although it doesn't report that it has the ability to wake up the computer.

But a few times when I have gotten the computer to go to sleep I was able to wake it up merely by screwing the antenna into the connector on the back. Even though the wireless connection had been disabled from the network and sharing control panel. Does this indicate that my wireless card is defective, or is there some setting on it that I don't know about. Are there any other reasons the computer may not go to sleep or immediately wake up? (I have looked in the event viewer and haven't seen anything suspicious.) Does windows have a log somewhere that could tell me what is waking the computer up (or keeping it from sleeping.)

What Doesn't Happen When PC Sleeps Or Hibernates

Feb 21, 2012

I've always wondered if background tasks continue to run while the PC is in sleep mode or hibernation. Are there actions that I can take to wake it up? What happens if I'm running a scan and the PC goes into hibernation or sleep mode?

Losing Connectivity When Computer Sleeps?

Oct 12, 2011

I recently installed Windows 7 (32-bit). I love everything about it except one major thing that seems to be a common problem, from the research I've done.Whenever the computer sleeps or goes in to standby mode, about 80% of the time when I come out of it, it loses the network connection. I will get one of two messages: "Local area connection doesn't have a valid IP address" or "Local area conncetion doesn't have a valid IP configuration." (It's usually the first message).I've Googled this several times and I've tried the fixes. I've tried searching for Bonjour (according to my Services list, it's disabled). I've tried setting the IPv6 off in the TCP/IP settings. I've tried changing the Wireless Adapter Setting's Power Save Mode to Maximum Performance. None of this has prevented this issue from happening.

BSOD After Computer Sleeps/hibernates A Few Minutes After Waking?

May 9, 2012

Recently (for the last few months), I've been having a problem where if I sleep/hibernate my laptop (Dell XPS 15), whether that be by shutting the lid or manually, upon waking I receive a BSOD after 5-20 minutes. The message presented is a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FALIURE. Interestingly, until the crash my USB ports also stop working completely.I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, which is NOT the original install, but a new one made from a retail CD. I installed this straight after getting the laptop (July 2010), and had no problems until mid-March.

BSOD After Computer Sleeps For A Short Period Of Time, 0x00000116

Nov 22, 2011

It seems i have narrowed down my issue that I have been dealing with for it seems like months now. Well essentially my system will reboot anytime it sits for an extended period of time (about 15 to 20 Minutes). My computer will go into standby mode. I do have it set for my computer to never sleep but only my screens. I have followed the BSOD instructions and do and those to attach to this post. Here is the additional information regarding this problem... Is Windows 7 . . . - x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? - x64 - the original installed OS on the system? Yes - an OEM or full retail version?Full retail version - What is the age of system (hardware)? Eh, varies video cards about a year old, memory and hardrives are about the same length of time. Chip is fairly new within a few months. - What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) OS was freshly reinstalled on 11/17/2011. All drivers for all pieces of hardware in my machine have had the newest drivers updated, including my video cards. I have also done the BIOS update for both of my video cards available from Palit. Oddly enough i can play Starcraft II for hours and no issue with rebooting... only when it sits for an extended period of time as mentioned earlier.

PC Randomly Shuts Off And Randomly Boots Up After (sometimes)?

Mar 7, 2012

When the PC is on it will depending on how long its been on will randomy just shut off. When it shuts off, it "sometimes" reboots but most often it "tries" to reboot but fails and then stays off. After this failed try to reboot if I press the power button on the case and mobo, nothing. Now if I turn OFF the PSU leave it for a few minutes and come back turn the PSU switch on and press the power button the system comes to life for a second or two then dies and will no respond to the power buttons until I turn off the PSU again.I have gotten it up and running from this state by leaving it off and unplugged for a couple of hours. When I say the PC comes to life for a second or two, I mean the case fans. If I get it booted up the BIOS is reset to default for some reason. Also if it makes it to windows, the notification area icons also gets reset... very very odd.I have a short video of the problem, sorry for the darkness, I finally decided to video it and it was 11pm.PSU dying or Mobo. I dont have extra's so I cant test them.Forgot to mention, ive checked for heat problems but none of my temps are high, they are all normal and its a Antec 1200 with tons of air movement.Event Viewer shows nothing expect for unexpected shutdown. My event viewer is clean from any errors also. I do not get any BSOD and this is on a fresh Windows 7 install from late Jan.

Windows Using Up 11.4GB Of RAM Randomly

Feb 5, 2012

After a while of being logged in (around an hour or so) Windows will start randomly using up RAM, up to 11.4 gigabytes. When I look in the Task Manager there's literally nothing that even COULD be using up that much RAM. On idle it will use up 5gb and even that is much much more than all of the applications are using in total. Any media players I might want to use on my computer completely go haywire after the 11.4gb. MPC-HC will skip frames constantly with the audio also skipping, VLC will play the audio but not the video whereas both of these would play perfectly well when I first signed in. Browser players (flash basically) work perfectly fine though. When I play a certain game and shut it down everything goes completely insane.

If I play another game the fps will constantly stutter between a full 60fps (which is also my screen limit) and 48 causing the character to seemingly teleport every step instead of fluid walking. My browser will also do a sort of stuttering (Firefox) when scrolling, instead of sliding down the page it will skip a portion but it won't stop scrolling so instead of the "tom's hardware" logo shifting down it will just skip it and skip the next part and the next etc. Though this issue does effect browser players, it doesn't effect application players (VLC, MPC-HC). Except only video players will stutter and everything else (browsers, games, regular applications) will work fine.

MPC-HC's audio will skip and fall behind the video causing basically for the characters to be mouthing words the audio played 5 seconds ago. VLC will start skipping the video while the audio stays intact so when a frame gets stuck it will just skip ahead to where the audio is. Any of these usually occur somewhere between 30min-1hr after being signed in. Once it does I have to shut the computer down and boot it back up again for everything to work normally again. Unfortunately I can't find anything specifically on this that's proved useful (installing/uninstalling certain windows updates as well as checking AV and drivers, uninstalling things).

Windows Keeps Freezing Randomly?

Nov 18, 2012

Windows keeps randomly freezing, forcing a hard reboot and occasionally I get a BSOD too.

I think it might have something to do with the external devices i have connected to my laptop: an external monitor, and an external keyboard with trackpad and an external mouse. Both the keyboard and mouse are wireless and share the same single usb receiver dongle (logitech unifying receiver)

I think it might be the driver for the usb receiver dongle that's causing the problems based on the dump file i've pasted below. Anyone have any suggestions for remedying this short of getting rid of the mouse and keyboard? Both have the latest drivers.

Windows 7 Randomly Freezes?

May 17, 2010

The Problem: My windows 7 PC freezes (and stays frozen) at apparently random times. The computer will not respond to the mouse or keyboard. Keyboard lights are on, but the Caps Lock key will not light up. This has happened both on startup and while using the PC. If a sound is playing when it freezes, the note will keep repeating. If I have the Task ManagersPerformance tab up, I can see that the CPU activity graph is frozen as well. The only option I have is to hit the reset button. There are no errors presented. The Event Log does not show any specific error occurring at the time of the freeze. The Event log only shows errors and warnings about my having shut down the PC unexpectedly. Nothing to show it was frozen and non-responsive. I have made sure all drivers are up to date. Ran SFC - it reports all files are in order. My web searches have found similar issues occurring with other people, on this and on other forums. I tried various solutions proposed (changed antivirus program, set power to high performance ran a windows repair install, tested memory and video card) but none of this has helped so far.

Windows 7 Randomly Hangs?

May 9, 2009

I'm having random Windows 7 complete system hangs. They produce no errors or warnings in the log other than a notice of an incomplete shutdown. I'm using the intel chipset driver for Vista with the system, and the Realtek HD audio driver for vista with it (this was happening before that driver being installed) and everything else is the default windows 7 driver, it's guaranteed to happen on Skype starting up with a lot of unread events, and copying a file to the desktop with Filezilla, but sometimes it's just random. Complete freeze, no mouse, no keyboard, no ctrl+alt+del Here's my computer specs:

Windows 7 RC (7100) x64
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 GHz (was overclocked to 3.51 during install, is now reduced to stock, problem remains)
ATI Radeon 4650 HD 1 GB version
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3L motherboard (Intel ICH10 chipset)
6 GB of DDR2 800 PC6400 RAM
a 640 GB WD Caviar Green HDD (SATA slave, not boot drive)
a 500 GB Seagate Barracuda GT 7200.11 (SATA master boot drive)
Sony DVD-RAM drive

Linksys PCI 802.11G wireless adapter (using 64 bit ralink drivers since the chipset matches, no prior issues when used on Windows 7 7000) Being through, I ran stress testers on maximum load on each hardware component, no crash on full CPU load, no crash on HDD load test, both drives and no crash on high RAM usage.I also remember similair symptoms on Vista, but this also did not happen iirc on Windows 7 7000.The system was overclocked during install, I reset the BIOS to "optimised defaults" after a few crashes, no difference.
