20GB Spare Space Really Required To Upgrade?
Oct 23, 2009
I've seen the upgrade requirements to upgrade from Vista 64 to Windows 7 64 and they call for 20GB of free hard drive space. Is this REALLY necessary? I currently have 9.47GB free right now, but can probably get that down a few gig more. Has anyone been able to upgrade with less than 20GB? Like others, I normally am a proponent of clean installs, but thought that I would give an upgrade install a try in order to not have to re-install everything that I already have installed. Vista 64 is running fine for me, but I really wanna get up to Windows 7. I'm interested to hear what others have experienced. Depending upon the feedback here, I may uninstall some STEAM games and then use a partitioning tool to rearrange my hard drive partitions to make the upgrade work. I have already backed up a majority of the files that I do not want to lose and will also do a FULL backup so that I can do a full restore in the event of catastrophic upgrade failure.

I am having a problem with installing Windows 7 on my netbook (Novero Solana). I did a clean install (wiped out Windows 8) and when using a USB boot install of Windows 7, I encountered the following error (Disk 0 Unallocated Space): "Windows 7 install Error "Setup was unable to use existing system partition because it does not contain the required free space". The other partition on my netbook is System Reserved (Disk 0 Partition 1: System Reserved), but I don't want to touch it, as I have heard it contains important files e.g. bootup. Attached is the screenshot of the "Install Windows" screen displaying the partitions.

I purchased the Windows 7 Professional upgrade version through Digital River and I have been trying to install Windows 7 since last night with no luck. I downloaded the ISO file and EXE file with absolutely no luck. I keep getting an error that my current version of Windows (Vista 32-Bit Home Basic) is not compatible with the version I am trying to install which is Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit.. I tried Paul's three methods with no luck =(. The second method gives me an error message that higher privileges are required to do this.
Why isn't my computer reading any of the Windows files as a boot disk? I hope I downloaded the files correctly. I did burn the ISO file to a disk but still no luck. I am so frustrated abd honestly had I known this was going to take up so much time I probably would have just continued suffering with Windows Vista which i absolutely hate with a passion.

I'm running build 7077 (x86) on my netbook, which has a 16GB hard drive. Windows 7 itself takes up just enough of the drive that there's not enough space left over to perform an upgrade installation to a newer build.
So tell me: is there any way to trick Windows into using an external hard drive (instead of the primary internal drive) for temporary storage during an upgrade installation?

I upgraded yesterday from Vista to 7. All seems to be working great, except that I noticed my HD now only has about 51G available (out of 160G). That was a huge jump.
I have not been able to locate any "windows.old" folder, but am sure there are some remnants of the Vista install somewhere.
Any ideas on how I can get my space back?

I install windows Windows 7 by upgrading from vista; using Windows 7 upgrade.
It takes for one hour and a half, then completed.
I go to check disk space on C, then it appears 117 GB used
therefore I find out system requirement of windows seven. It is just 20 GB for x64
So I think the remaining must be some updated files or required space for Windows 7 themes.
But what exactly are they from and what is it?
and how can I hand it.

In a few days time I will be changing my ISP in the UK from Sky to BT.
BT are providing me with their newest wireless router free of charge as part of the deal and I'll be using that to set up my wireless network, which will consist of an HP Pavilion desktop, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony Vaio laptop, an HP wireless printer and a Samsung HDTV.
This means my Sky wireless router is surplus to requirements, so I was wondering if I could convert it to a wireless access point to improve the range of my BT wireless network.
I've read a couple of supposedly easy-to-understand articles on Google and have to say they left me more confused than ever.

It will get as far as "expanding files" then stop at 0%, with an error saying "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation." I have tried it with multiple iso burns on different dvds from the download I got of it, redownloading it from the official downloader, and now have tried the dvd that came in the mail, to no avail.

I've done a lot of Windows 7 upgrades for people and I've noticed that I've never had to enter any kind of key when upgrading a properly activated copy of Vista, I think even during clean installs...
Does it activate automatically or is it just a matter of it waiting a week before yelling at you about it?

I have been trying to install Windows 7 Professional x86 several times, and always encounter the same problem.
I downloaded Windows 7 via the MSDN Academic Alliance and then copied all files to a recently reformatted 4Gb USB stick.
Then I changed the BIOS settings on my computer to boot from the USB drive, and it boots and then starts. When i press on the Install button however, it says its starting the install but then quickly and the following message appears;
"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.
Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step." The message also allows me to browse for said missing drivers, but i cant find any drivers anywhere.

But if I clicked the Windows update button then it showed up and installed fine. However, to get duplex printing to work I had to right click the printer and select Printer Properties, then Device settings and installable options, then select duplex unit installed.

Here are my current computer specs:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.60GHz
2.00 GB RAM
32-bit Operating System
AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
I understand 2.00 GB is not a good amount for Skyrim as it continuously lags and freezes. What I need to know is how much RAM and/or other parts could I upgrade to make it run nice and smoothly, with hardly any if not no lagg at all? Also my motherboard has 4 slots for RAM, would it be possible to run 8GB ram on a 32-bit system?

This is really a non-important issue but I still will like to know how to use this feature. I have Windows 7 Build 7100, I have been able to set everything else with easy but I can not find a way to have or set a password when I wake up the PC from my screensaver. The "Require a Password" is ticked though.
Anybody else?

I've gotten the Windows 7 RC 7100 x86 iso burned to a DvD. I have a spare HDD (30gb). I unplugged my main (XP) HDD so I wouldn't have an conflicting problems (if any) during the install.
I put in the CD and rebooted. I booted from the CD and went through the install process. It all went well, no problems, it made its main partition with the reserved system partition on the HDD.

I have been assured that the Windows 7 Ultimate installed on this computer is a genuine copy and am informed that is indicated in Control Panel/System.The CPU and Motherboard were recently upgraded with with the Windows 7 installation in place. I was under the impression that major hardware changes required re-activation. The owner (I have not seen the computer as yet) states that wasn't required but now programs like FSX and some related flight sim addons do not now work.Rumor has suggested that computer repairman that normally works on this computer has in the past installed pirated software on other computers.Maybe I am a little suspicious as I suggested that the computer should be reformatted, Windows 7 Ultimate re-installed and we go from there. That suggestion was rejected and I am only required to fix FSX and associated software.
I am aware roughly the date when the hardware updates were carried out and for piece of mind would like to know when the activation was carried out and if it was legal. My question is (and apologies for lengthy post): is the date of activation available via the Registry? and what other options are available to check if the copy of Windows 7 is lega
