Dec 5, 2011

I was uninstalling some stuff for space and i got an error and had to force quit the uninstall thing and now all of my icons are gone and i get an error message saying "C:windowssystem32configsystemprofiledesktop refers to a location that is unavailable."

I'm not sure what to do so i've been trying to figure out how to fix it and a few people have said to go into my users folder and delete the empy desktop folder if there is 2 of them but there isn't even a desktop folder in it...There's not a desktop folder in any of the user folders.

C:windowssystem32configsystemprofileDesktop Refers To A Location That Is Unavailable

Aug 19, 2010

I restarted my computer today, and when it turned back on it came with an error message saying C:windowssystem32configsystemprofileDesktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to to make sure the disk is properly inserted. All of my desktop and taskbar icons were gone, and my desktop seemed to revert back to Window 98. When I restarted my computer again half of my icons were back, but the desktop still looked like it was from 1998. When I went into the control panel to change the theme, it changed back to my windows 7 theme, but every time I restart the computer it reverts back to windows 98.

"C:windowssystem32configsystemprofileDesktop Refers To A Location That Is Unavailable"

Apr 3, 2012

When I restarted my computer after running a check of the hard drive, I got a message that read "C:windowssystem32configsystemprofileDesktop refers to a location that is unavailable" The desktop had reverted to a default appearance and all the icons on it except for the recycle bin were gone. Under the Start Menu, the only program listed was Solitaire, though if I clicked "All Programs" at the bottom it did list them all. I read that it might be a registry issue, so I downloaded and ran "Free Windows Registry Repair", but when I restarted the computer afterwards I saw it did not fix the problem. I also read it could be an issue with "hkey_local_machinesoftwaremicrosoftwindows NTcurrentversionprofilelist". That did not come up when I ran the Registry Repair program, and I cannot get to regedit, because Run does not appear as an option when I type run in the search bar in the Start Menu.

File Refers To A Location That Is Unavailable?

Jan 8, 2013

I have more than a 100GB of video files in wmv format on my Windows 7 partition. When I tried to look for it the other day, the folder /Users/kl/Videos/Logitech Webcam/ was no longer there. But when i searched for "wmv" it showed up in search, then then I clicked open location, it said that the location is unavailable. I know that the files are still on the disk because I have 370GB on that partition, and only 90GB is free. This was the same as when I could still access those video files so they could not have been deleted. How can I gain access to these files again? I have already tried all the instructions on this page

Installing Audio Drivers Causes Desktop Location Error

Jun 17, 2012

With my motherboard (asrock n68c-gs) i need to install the windows 7 VIA audio drivers. After doing so, the "No audio output device is installed" error disappears and I can access the volume icon. Upon reboot though, once I login I get the "C:...Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable" error. Now this error ONLY occurs when I install an audio driver that fixes the audio output device error. It also hapened when I installed the realtek 3d blah blah driver, which also fixed the error, but not when I installed the realtek HD audio driver, which didn't fix the problem. The problem IS the correct driver installation, which has to be the most retarded issue I've experienced in the last decade.

I've had to use a restore point every time just to get the desktop back. I've tried solutions such as looking in the location where it says the desktop is unavailable, and also checked regedit User Shell Folders. The registry entries pointed to C:Users(my profile). Checking it now it gives a variable %USERPROFILE%.

The only thing I can think of is that I downloaded and installed a Java update yesterday. Did this cause the 501/505 error problem? I also tried following the steps recommended by Microsoft for XP [URL]
