Wordpad Alternative That Stores Window Size?

Mar 16, 2009

Is there an app similar to wordpad that can store window size and position for each file. I'm using it like a stick-it note. One file may contain to do list, which I size to a small window since each line is very short, another file may contain rebates status which would have a wider window, etc.

Saving Window Size

Apr 15, 2008

I use 'Computer' (use to be called Windows Explorer) a lot in Windows Vista Home Premium to manage my hard drive. It's a nuisance that it starts up as a too small window and I have to stretch it each time to see more. Is there a way to force it to memorize the previous state and restore?

Increasing Window Size?

Dec 23, 2009

When I go from my desktop to my internet homepage (yahoo), I sometimes get a small window , and sometimes get a whole-page size window. I prefer the whole-page size without having to click that middle restore button on the upper right-hand corner of my screen everytime I go to my homepage. First, what are the names that describe the smaller size window, and the larger one? Is that what a thumbnail is? Second, I must presume there's a setting somewhere, where I can toggle the whole-page size preference when I go from my desktop to homepage. Can you tell me if there is, and how do I get to it?

Window Opens At Default Size, Not Maximized

Apr 6, 2009

I use Vista Home Premium. I have an open source app that I want to be maximized when launched. How can I do this?

I've tried maximizing in 2 ways:

- Using the small square at the top right.

- Dragging the corners of the window to fill the screen.

In both cases, if I close and then re-open, the window has its default size.

Properties To Reset The Window Text Size

Jun 3, 2009

My Windows dialog boxes are too small to display all the text they contain. And as we know, these verdammt boxes are not resizable. Up to now, this has been a minor annoyance, but now it's a major one: it's keeping me from completing the Vista x64 SP2 patch install.

As you can see in the attachments, the window text is just too big. It overflows the sides of the dialog. And because the SP2 EULA screen requires that you view all its text, and I can't, I never get an active "NEXT" button to proceed with the installation. Changing screen res does not help.

I've tried Personalize > Windows Color and Appearance > Open Classic Appearance Properties to reset the Window Text size, but the option to do this is grayed out. I've tried the registry hack found on this board to try and substitute a smaller font, but no go. I've tried several hackware proggies to try and force unresizeable windows to resize, but no joy there either. I've also tried Chris Pirillo's Vista Font Fix to no avail

Explorer Window Not Remembering The Size When It Was Last Closed

Mar 25, 2009

When I open windows explorer menu it opens at a smaller window size then I'd like it to, so I resize it and close it but the next time that I open it from right clicking on the start menu and choosing explore, it opens at the same position and small size and isn't holding the window resizing that I did... What I've tried so far to make the window size "stick":

1. Use the Windows Explorer "ALT" key to bring up the File menu at the top of the explorer and choose "close" after resizing my Explorer window.
2. Made sure that the "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked. I've also unchecked it, chose apply, then recheck marked it and chose apply just in case it needed refreshing.
3. Used the "X" button at the top right of the window to close it after resizing it to the size that I want. And finally
4. Chose the upper left corner menu (the one with Restore, Minimize, Move, Close in it) and chosen Close...............

Scaling Remote Desktop To The Client Window Size?

Mar 23, 2008

Isn't there a way to scale the 'Remote Desktop' host desktop to the window size on the remote client? We would like the host desktop to automatically shrink-to-fit the window on our remote client computer, much like the option available in 'Remote Assistance'. So far, our only option is to view the host desktop at full-size in a smaller remote client window with scroll bars that allow us to scroll to different areas of the host desktop. Is there not an option that forces the host desktop to shrink-to-fit the clent 'Remote Desktop' window?

Browser Choice: Where Windows Stores Newly Installed Updates

I want to uninstall the damned browser choice notice now being presented every time I boot. I just wish that unelected, corrupt bunch of crooks in the EU Commission would butt out. It was they who forced Microsoft to punish us this way. Although it would also have been sensible for Microsoft to add a 'Do Not Show Again' button.

My problem is after capturing the image and pasting it to a wordpad or equivalent, I couldn't find a way to copy/paste to a post like this one. The Paste was always grayed out when I tried to paste it here. Either that, or I would have an empty box with a red X at the top. I can't use the paperclip icon either, because people who clicked the link would be asked to join something before they could see the screenshot.

Alternative To Windows Mail?

Aug 19, 2009

I just switched to Vista and cannot get Windows Mail to work the way Outlook Express did. The two major problems I am having are:

1) I have two email accounts ??? one personal and one for my business. In OE, I simply set up two ???identities??? and selected the one I wanted to use. Whatever identity I had selected would become the email address for outgoing and incoming messages. Now all In messages are commingled. For outgoing, I cannot figure out how to send from my business email ??? everything goes out with my personal address in the from line. From reading the posts here, it seems Microsoft requires that you create separate User Accounts for each email account. This is rediculous.

2) For my personal email account, I kept multiple sets of addresses within the Address Book. I had three: Personal, Church and a club I belong to. When you created an email, OE has a pull down menu to select which set for which you want to see the list of contacts. Apparently this feature is now gone and when I imported all three sets were combined. It makes things very unwieldy.

Checkbox Select Alternative

Aug 23, 2005

Windows Vista includes a new method to select files when using explorer. Instead of holding down CTRL and then clicking on all the files you want to select, Vista includes the option to check boxes to select items instead.  This new feature can be a little hard to get used to at first, but after you use it for a little while, it will be helpful if you were a big user of the CTRL method.

This feature has helped me in situations where I had to select dozens of files or folders and would accidentally click in the wrong area and then I would loose all of my selections, forcing me to start over selecting folders. With the check box feature enabled, accidental clicks that lead to mass de-selection are no longer possible.

Enabling the new feature is very easy, just about anyone could do it. To get started, follow the steps below:

In order to begin, you will need to use the Tools menu. In Windows Vista the menu-bar is hidden by default in most windows. Just hit ALT on your keyboard to bring it back. Now that you can see it again, click on Tools and then select Folder Options.
Once the Folder Options dialog is displayed, click on the View tab....

Disappointment With Alternative Media Program?

Feb 14, 2009

I'm posting this question to relevant newsgroups, I hope you don't mind.

I subscribed to the alternative media program and I do not yet what to make
of the six DVD set that I received from Microsoft. I had hoped to order the
64-bit media but something got screwed up and they sent me 32-bit media and
the DVDs were dated 2007. Was this a clearance sale? SP1 was on a separate
DVD. A more useful product would have SP1 incorporated into the install DVD.
When I tried to run the install DVD from Vista, it told me that I could not
do an upgrade because the version of Vista that I was running was more
recent that the version on the DVD. I subscribe to Vista update loyally. I
did not want to do a clean install and screw up months of work, especially
when I really wanted 64-bit media. I had a look at the other four DVDs. They
all contain folders labeled 'Sources' and one humungous SWM install file. My
copy of Vista does not know what to do with these compressed SWM files and I
cannot Google anything.

Can someone please resolve my puzzlement? Did I receive anything of value
from Microsoft? Do I have any entitlement to 64-bit media?

Security X64: Is There A Zonealarm Alternative Out There For Vista 64?

Apr 21, 2008

I currently run Zonealarm Security Suite on my XP Pro machine, and I love it. After a week or so it is totally passive and it catches everything. I paid 10 for a license key on ebay 2 years ago for $10 and I still have 58,000 days left until it expires. Best of all, it leaves an un-noticeable footprint on my machine.

I have 2 AMD 64 4200 Dual Core machines. I recently installed Vista Ultimate 64 on one of them to see how it goes. Unfortunately, Zonealarm won't work on Vista 64. I don't like paying for Security programs but I am not entirely sure free ones up to the task.

I don't trust Microsoft with its firewall, defender, or live one care (They can barely build an operating system let alone defend or ensure it runs properly). Everyone who has ever asked me for PC help usually has McAffee or Norton. McCaffee (at least in my experience with other users) consistently fails to protect a machine, not to mention bogs down the system. Norton 2005 was a decenet product but everything after that seems to be garbage same as Mcaffee. is there a Zonealarm alternative out there for Vista 64

Microsoft has removed the classic Windows NT style logon screen in Windows Vista. You can no longer hit CTRL+ALT+Delete to get to a logon box where you can type in the username and password. Instead you have to enable the alternative logon screen to restore this capability.

Click on the Start Button, key in secpol.msc and hit Enter.

Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.

Locate and right click on "Interactive logon: Do not display last user name" and select Properties.....

Sandboxie Alternative 64 Bit Home Premium Not Compatible?

Jan 20, 2008

I've been using Sandboxie for safe surfing on Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Now I'm preparing for a new PC with Vista Home Premium 64 bit and Sandboxie is not compatible. Other than conventional anti-virus and firewall does anyone have an alternative? So far I'm thinking along the lines of Virtual Box since VMWare is a bit pricey. But I'm not sure how well it works as I've never set it up before.

Apparently 64 bit Vista tries to prevent altering the kernel image in memory which is how Sandboxie and similar programs intercept disk writes to redirect everything to a sandbox folder. At this point all I have so far is running Firefox with NoScript.

Broken (and "locked"?) Rtf > Wordpad Association

Mar 4, 2009

Vista Home Premium 64 bit

Service Pack 1

*Virus/Malware scanners up to date, nothing suspicious in tasks, no odd performance issues...

Description of Problem

After "Something ?" Happened, Windows lost the ability to Default-open

Rtf files in wordpad. This Had been the default behavior.

*At the time, OpenOffice was installed, and when this problem first occurred,

Openoffce WP “became” the default Open action.

I uninstalled Openoffice, which only resulted in “blank” icons for rtf files.

Double-clicking (shell-default verb) only results in “Windows cannot open this file…use web service, or browse to find correct application”

1) OK, web service does absolutely nothing. (Is this blocked by default firewall settings?)

2) Clicking “browse for correct app” SHOWS wordpad as the default, “suggested” app. (!!!)

The “always use this app” checkbox is checked.

Basically, this “checkbox” is apparently broken, because Windows can’t associate the file with the app. It always forgets, or does nothing.

Now, if you Right Click on the rtf file, the Bold Face Open (top, default action verb) brings up The “windows cannot open this file…etc.”. If you click the small “Open” below this, the file Opens Up In WordPad (!).

If you click “properties”, you see that “rtf” files are associated (default open) with….

“Windows Shell Common…?” (looks like a .dll icon, as I can’t see the whole name in the property dialog)….If you click “Change”, it opens up the “Browse for correct app” Window, again Showing WordPad (!!!) as default, suggested program.

Somehow, this basic shell double-click default verb action for “rtf” is broken and gets pointed to Some basic shell system .dll instead of wordpad.

*****Interestingly, using a few different “file association editor” programs, they all show that “rtf” is not a valid, assigned extention. It is listed as “orphaned”, but Cannot be associated with anything. In particular, “File Type Manager 2” shows “rtf” in the orphaned category, but if you click “change”, “rtf” isn’t of course listed in the “valid” extentions that can be associated to.

I’ve searched the registry for every “rtf” related key, and compared to other computers…everything seems the same, nothing seems broken or missing.

Would there be different settings using “Wordpad” as the registry search?

Would there be an odd, malicious malware thing that would “steal” the rtf extension and Not let Vista reassign it?
