Scaling Remote Desktop To The Client Window Size?

Mar 23, 2008

Isn't there a way to scale the 'Remote Desktop' host desktop to the window size on the remote client? We would like the host desktop to automatically shrink-to-fit the window on our remote client computer, much like the option available in 'Remote Assistance'. So far, our only option is to view the host desktop at full-size in a smaller remote client window with scroll bars that allow us to scroll to different areas of the host desktop. Is there not an option that forces the host desktop to shrink-to-fit the clent 'Remote Desktop' window?

Remote Desktop Can Not Find Remote Computer

Mar 22, 2009

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a new HP pavilion laptop. I'm trying to log into my work system remotely. The error I'm getting is "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Remote desktop cannot find the remote computer. Type the computer name or IP address again, and then try connecting" I've tried the help desk at work, they say they know there has been issues with people loggin in with Vista, but its been resolved. But they have not actually been able to help me log in. They are running Windows NT.

Remote Desktop And Getting "This Computer Can't Connect To The Remote Computer

Sep 8, 2009

I am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine. I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator." I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.

Saving Window Size

Apr 15, 2008

I use 'Computer' (use to be called Windows Explorer) a lot in Windows Vista Home Premium to manage my hard drive. It's a nuisance that it starts up as a too small window and I have to stretch it each time to see more. Is there a way to force it to memorize the previous state and restore?

Increasing Window Size?

Dec 23, 2009

When I go from my desktop to my internet homepage (yahoo), I sometimes get a small window , and sometimes get a whole-page size window. I prefer the whole-page size without having to click that middle restore button on the upper right-hand corner of my screen everytime I go to my homepage. First, what are the names that describe the smaller size window, and the larger one? Is that what a thumbnail is? Second, I must presume there's a setting somewhere, where I can toggle the whole-page size preference when I go from my desktop to homepage. Can you tell me if there is, and how do I get to it?

Window Opens At Default Size, Not Maximized

Apr 6, 2009

I use Vista Home Premium. I have an open source app that I want to be maximized when launched. How can I do this?

I've tried maximizing in 2 ways:

- Using the small square at the top right.

- Dragging the corners of the window to fill the screen.

In both cases, if I close and then re-open, the window has its default size.

Properties To Reset The Window Text Size

Jun 3, 2009

My Windows dialog boxes are too small to display all the text they contain. And as we know, these verdammt boxes are not resizable. Up to now, this has been a minor annoyance, but now it's a major one: it's keeping me from completing the Vista x64 SP2 patch install.

As you can see in the attachments, the window text is just too big. It overflows the sides of the dialog. And because the SP2 EULA screen requires that you view all its text, and I can't, I never get an active "NEXT" button to proceed with the installation. Changing screen res does not help.

I've tried Personalize > Windows Color and Appearance > Open Classic Appearance Properties to reset the Window Text size, but the option to do this is grayed out. I've tried the registry hack found on this board to try and substitute a smaller font, but no go. I've tried several hackware proggies to try and force unresizeable windows to resize, but no joy there either. I've also tried Chris Pirillo's Vista Font Fix to no avail

Wordpad Alternative That Stores Window Size?

Mar 16, 2009

Is there an app similar to wordpad that can store window size and position for each file. I'm using it like a stick-it note. One file may contain to do list, which I size to a small window since each line is very short, another file may contain rebates status which would have a wider window, etc.

Explorer Window Not Remembering The Size When It Was Last Closed

Mar 25, 2009

When I open windows explorer menu it opens at a smaller window size then I'd like it to, so I resize it and close it but the next time that I open it from right clicking on the start menu and choosing explore, it opens at the same position and small size and isn't holding the window resizing that I did... What I've tried so far to make the window size "stick":

1. Use the Windows Explorer "ALT" key to bring up the File menu at the top of the explorer and choose "close" after resizing my Explorer window.
2. Made sure that the "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked. I've also unchecked it, chose apply, then recheck marked it and chose apply just in case it needed refreshing.
3. Used the "X" button at the top right of the window to close it after resizing it to the size that I want. And finally
4. Chose the upper left corner menu (the one with Restore, Minimize, Move, Close in it) and chosen Close...............

Remote Desktop Can't Get Connection

May 30, 2008

I am trying to connect to my Vista Ultimate 32 machine from an XP Professional machine. I can't get a connection or even an attempt at a connection. Here is what I've tried so far.

- I turned off the Windows firewall.
- I am connecting from another computer inside my network.
- I have tried both the (less secure) and (more secure) options in the Remote desktop area.
- I have tried to telnet to my machine to port 3389 and it fails to connect.
- I can ping the machine, see shared directories and connect to remote management.
- I have turned on all services having to do with remote access and terminal services.

So just clarify, it isn't a router issue, I am just trying to connect from one machine to another inside my network. Once I get that working, I will setup the router. I have been searching around for a while trying to find the answer to this problem. I have seen a hundred posts related to this topic but they all seem to end to at "try to telnet to port 3389" with no further responses

Remote Desktop: Static IP

Jan 12, 2010

I'll preface this with the fact I am only so knowledgeable about this IP stuff. I am all my computer challenged family has to rely on so I want to be able to see what happening on about three other computers in three different locations. I am a serious cheapskate so I tried some Shareware called "Anyplace control" worked great through the online account but slow. There is apparently a direct connection option but I need a static ip to make that happen. So keeping it as simplistic as possible for me how do I get my mother Vista laptop, my two daughters Win 7 laptops able to be remote tweaked from either my Vista laptop or XP desktop. I am not locked into that software it was just easiest at the time.

VPN And Remote Desktop Connection

May 30, 2008

I have a new Lenovo with Vista for business OS (that replaces my old thinkpad on XP). At my office, I am able to use remote desktop connection to remotely operate my work pc (a VISTA business OS) - by attaching to the work network by wire. However, at home I use the VPN to connect to the work network. THe VPN connects just fine but the RDC comes up with the error message "This computer can't connect to the remote PC." At home I have a 3 PC wired network with the notebook being one of the connections. THe other PCs are XP pro's and can connect via the VPN and RDC to my work PC with no problems.

I've read the posts and it seems there isn't a clear answer to this problem. Also, if there is a fix that affects my home network, then what happens when I'm traveling and use the broadband connection in a hotel? If the issue is opening ports, I'll need some help as my experience with my router (netgear) is basic to moderate. I need to resolve this as I leave town in a week for business and I need to connect

Remote Desktop Cannot Connect

Mar 15, 2010

This is strange. I have two nearly identical HP laptops. Both are the same model, but one (that gives trouble) has some additional hardware (video) features. Both are running Vista Home Premium 64 and have all the updates applied. I am trying to open a RD session on an XP Home Pro machine. One of the HP's works without a hitch. The other one gives up with a "Cannot Connect" message (but, of course, no details about what went wrong.) System logs on the XP and both laptops don't reveal anything that I can find. I tried copying the .rdb file from the one that works to the one that doesn't. That made no difference. The failing laptop can ping the XP system, and file and printer sharing work fine. The user id's on both laptops are the same - the user accounts are set up the same on each.

Cannot Connect To Remote Desktop From XP

Dec 5, 2008

I am on a corporate domain running windows vista. There is apparently a group policy that is preventing me from starting the windows firewall service. That's fine since I don't want to use it anyways. Before joining the machine to the domain, I enabled Remote Desktop. Now, even though remote desktop is enabled, I cannot connect to the vista machine from my XP machine. I tried to telnet from the xp machine to the vista machine on port 3389 and it failed. So my suspicion is that I need to open up this port on the vista machine somehow. What I don't understand is what's blocking the port? The firewall is disabled (service is not running) and I haven't installed any other firewall software. Also, both machines are on the same subnet and remote desktop connections are possible on other machines over the LAN, so I don't believe it's anything that needs to be changed on a router. This is starting to drive me insane! (I'm a software developer, not a system or network administrator, so this is really a weak spot in my knowledge.)

Remote Desktop Update Not Installed

May 15, 2010

I was using remote desktop from my win2000 to my vista yesterday completely fine. however id been having some trouble with the vista machine and reinstalled vista. Today I allowed remote assistance on my vista machine and found i couldnt connect. I looked it up and realised that the remote desktop, usually under the remote assistance option, was gone. I had set vista to install the recommended updates only, but being vista, about 5 out of the 25 didnt install. Im guessing the remote desktop functionality is in one of these updates i have not installed, my question is: which one. Or is it not in the "recommended" updates, and if so, could you give me a clue which updates i should be installing to return remote desk... However if there is some kind of command that unlocks it or something, even better! This forum looks great, im sorry to start with a qustion though D;!!!

Remote Desktop:When Connect Everything Shut Down

Sep 18, 2007

I have a intel Quad core running vista x64 that I use only for my Media Center station. It has no keyboard and no mouse. no monitor, only the TV. What I am trying to do here is remote connect to it with my old Win98 computer to encode, menage etc my media on that computer. So far all this work very nicely, but What I am wondering is is there a way I can do this without the `Current User` on the media center to log off? Because when I remote connect, the media center software and everything shut down. And since using Remote access requires me to set up a password to the `current user` when I boot up the media center computer, I have to enter the password ( and I have no keyboard connected to it) so I have to plug in the usb keyboard. I thought maybe RADMIN 3.0 would be the solution but I haven't heard any success story running radmin onto Vista x64.
