REPOST - Disappointment With Alternative Media Program?

Feb 14, 2009

I subscribed to the alternative media program and I do not yet what to makeof the six DVD set that I received from Microsoft. I had hoped to order the64-bit media but something got screwed up and they sent me 32-bit media andthe DVDs were dated 2007. Was this a clearance sale? SP1 was on a separateDVD. A more useful product would have SP1 incorporated into the install DVD.When I tried to run the install DVD from Vista, it told me that I could notdo an upgrade because the version of Vista that I was running was morerecent that the version on the DVD. I subscribe to Vista update loyally. Idid not want to do a clean install and screw up months of work, especiallywhen I really wanted 64-bit media. I had a look at the other four DVDs. Theyall contain folders labeled 'Sources' and one humungous SWM install file. Mycopy of Vista does not know what to do with these compressed SWM files and Icannot Google anything.

Disappointment With Alternative Media Program?

Feb 14, 2009

I'm posting this question to relevant newsgroups, I hope you don't mind.

I subscribed to the alternative media program and I do not yet what to make
of the six DVD set that I received from Microsoft. I had hoped to order the
64-bit media but something got screwed up and they sent me 32-bit media and
the DVDs were dated 2007. Was this a clearance sale? SP1 was on a separate
DVD. A more useful product would have SP1 incorporated into the install DVD.
When I tried to run the install DVD from Vista, it told me that I could not
do an upgrade because the version of Vista that I was running was more
recent that the version on the DVD. I subscribe to Vista update loyally. I
did not want to do a clean install and screw up months of work, especially
when I really wanted 64-bit media. I had a look at the other four DVDs. They
all contain folders labeled 'Sources' and one humungous SWM install file. My
copy of Vista does not know what to do with these compressed SWM files and I
cannot Google anything.

Can someone please resolve my puzzlement? Did I receive anything of value
from Microsoft? Do I have any entitlement to 64-bit media?

SP1 - Big Disappointment

Mar 27, 2008

I have been hanging on with Vista in case SP1 fixed all the bugs and have been running it for a few days now - but still the big problems persist - I still get random catastrophic USB failures. Seems that Vista just cannot cope with multiple USB connections as well as XP can. The folder settinsg seem to get remembered a bit better now, but I still cannot understand the "logic" which decides what folders are opened with what settings. They just seem totally random to me, bearing no relation to the content. At least now the manual changes are remembered until the next time though..... It is still dismally slow to reboot.

And still the annoying "permission required" warnings when I want to delete something obviously redundant (eg leftover foldes from uninstalled software). Still too much bloat and incompatibility with other microsoft products (eg microsoft fingerprint reader and sidebar do not coexist without conflict, windows fax files are not included in Vista backups and you can't move the fax default folder to somewhere that is included in backups without crashing fax, DEP still prevents downloading of jpeg movies from a microsoft telephone via microsoft mobile device center, and liveone care still not properly compatible with Vista). If Microsoft can't even make their own products compatible with one another then it is no surprise that Vista does not work with a whole load of other perfectly good software. DISASTER!!! I'm now taking the plunge to format and reinstall everything on XP.

Alternative To Windows Mail?

Aug 19, 2009

I just switched to Vista and cannot get Windows Mail to work the way Outlook Express did. The two major problems I am having are:

1) I have two email accounts ??? one personal and one for my business. In OE, I simply set up two ???identities??? and selected the one I wanted to use. Whatever identity I had selected would become the email address for outgoing and incoming messages. Now all In messages are commingled. For outgoing, I cannot figure out how to send from my business email ??? everything goes out with my personal address in the from line. From reading the posts here, it seems Microsoft requires that you create separate User Accounts for each email account. This is rediculous.

2) For my personal email account, I kept multiple sets of addresses within the Address Book. I had three: Personal, Church and a club I belong to. When you created an email, OE has a pull down menu to select which set for which you want to see the list of contacts. Apparently this feature is now gone and when I imported all three sets were combined. It makes things very unwieldy.

Checkbox Select Alternative

Aug 23, 2005

Windows Vista includes a new method to select files when using explorer. Instead of holding down CTRL and then clicking on all the files you want to select, Vista includes the option to check boxes to select items instead.  This new feature can be a little hard to get used to at first, but after you use it for a little while, it will be helpful if you were a big user of the CTRL method.

This feature has helped me in situations where I had to select dozens of files or folders and would accidentally click in the wrong area and then I would loose all of my selections, forcing me to start over selecting folders. With the check box feature enabled, accidental clicks that lead to mass de-selection are no longer possible.

Enabling the new feature is very easy, just about anyone could do it. To get started, follow the steps below:

In order to begin, you will need to use the Tools menu. In Windows Vista the menu-bar is hidden by default in most windows. Just hit ALT on your keyboard to bring it back. Now that you can see it again, click on Tools and then select Folder Options.
Once the Folder Options dialog is displayed, click on the View tab....

Security X64: Is There A Zonealarm Alternative Out There For Vista 64?

Apr 21, 2008

I currently run Zonealarm Security Suite on my XP Pro machine, and I love it. After a week or so it is totally passive and it catches everything. I paid 10 for a license key on ebay 2 years ago for $10 and I still have 58,000 days left until it expires. Best of all, it leaves an un-noticeable footprint on my machine.

I have 2 AMD 64 4200 Dual Core machines. I recently installed Vista Ultimate 64 on one of them to see how it goes. Unfortunately, Zonealarm won't work on Vista 64. I don't like paying for Security programs but I am not entirely sure free ones up to the task.

I don't trust Microsoft with its firewall, defender, or live one care (They can barely build an operating system let alone defend or ensure it runs properly). Everyone who has ever asked me for PC help usually has McAffee or Norton. McCaffee (at least in my experience with other users) consistently fails to protect a machine, not to mention bogs down the system. Norton 2005 was a decenet product but everything after that seems to be garbage same as Mcaffee. is there a Zonealarm alternative out there for Vista 64

Enable Alternative Logon Screen

Dec 12, 2006

Microsoft has removed the classic Windows NT style logon screen in Windows Vista. You can no longer hit CTRL+ALT+Delete to get to a logon box where you can type in the username and password. Instead you have to enable the alternative logon screen to restore this capability.

Click on the Start Button, key in secpol.msc and hit Enter.

Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.

Locate and right click on "Interactive logon: Do not display last user name" and select Properties.....

Sandboxie Alternative 64 Bit Home Premium Not Compatible?

Jan 20, 2008

I've been using Sandboxie for safe surfing on Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Now I'm preparing for a new PC with Vista Home Premium 64 bit and Sandboxie is not compatible. Other than conventional anti-virus and firewall does anyone have an alternative? So far I'm thinking along the lines of Virtual Box since VMWare is a bit pricey. But I'm not sure how well it works as I've never set it up before.

Apparently 64 bit Vista tries to prevent altering the kernel image in memory which is how Sandboxie and similar programs intercept disk writes to redirect everything to a sandbox folder. At this point all I have so far is running Firefox with NoScript.

Wordpad Alternative That Stores Window Size?

Is there an app similar to wordpad that can store window size and position for each file. I'm using it like a stick-it note. One file may contain to do list, which I size to a small window since each line is very short, another file may contain rebates status which would have a wider window, etc.

Alternative Browser: Concerning The Internet Explorer - New Zero-Day Exploit In-the-wild?

Dec 13, 2008

Concerning the Internet Explorer - New Zero-Day exploit in-the-wild, besides applying the workarounds advised, I've also seen it recommended to maybe use an alternative browser until this has been fixed. I've only ever used IE7 and would like some advise please on which other browser I could use on Vista that would be the most secure. I've been looking at Opera, Firefox and maybe K-melon or Google Chrome, but from a security point of view, don't know which to choose.

Media Streaming

Nov 26, 2009

I am using a NAS for storing all my media files (photos, DVDs, music etc)
and was interested in the possibilty of using this drive to stream the info
around my house but all the systems I can find rely on a PC to at least
facilitate this. Are there any systems that would be able to read the NAS
directly on need the PC to be on?

Also are there any systems that would take the signal from my rooftop aerial
and stream that back to the PC/NAS so that I could effectively use the
PC/NAS as a PVR (the PC has a TV tuner card but the reception on it's local
aerial is rubbish and the rooftop one is much better)?

Media Player

Mar 29, 2009

I cannot now open any wav file with Medic Player. The shortcut on the start menu does not start Media Player. If I go to the directory that contains the media player exe files and click on any one of them (e.go. wmplayer.exe, wmlaunch.exe, wmpshare.exe, morph.exe etc. ).nothing happens. Also I recently noticed that email containing Power
Point formats do not open.

I don't know if they are related but a couple of weeks ago I down loaded from the Microsoft site programs for reading the newer versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.

I have tried to find the Media Player software on the Microsoft site thinking I could reinstall it but all I can find is updates to it. I don't even know what version of Media Players I have. I am using Vista, with all current patches.
