(This was three days ago) I now wish to go back to Vista, as I didn't expect this and never planned to turn to XP. A vista CD did not come with my laptop, but I have a serial. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Vaio VGN FZ11Z with Vista home premium. I seemed to have picked up a virus which stopped me from booting into normal mode and in Safe Mode there was constant access to the hard disk, no response from the mouse or keyboard and then it just rebooted. Start up repair couldn't find anything wrong. After trying to find a solution I decided to backup my data via the recovery DVD and do a complete system recovery. On the second part of the process where it is installing vista, after a restart I received a black screen titled "Windows Boot Manager" telling me a critical driver was missing or corrupt. I couldn't find any answers to this anywhere, so after trying Statup Repair again (which never finishes) I decided to wipe the disk before staring a sytem recovery again. This froze for a couple of hours on 80% so I stopped it. Now I have " The volume does not contain a recognized file system" when in the recovery console. I did a diagnostic on the hardware at the start of all this and no problems were reported. I have all my data, I have all the recovery disks, all I want to do is have a fresh start!!!!

I'm having difficulty in parsing this quote from Microsofts own website "The 64-bit editions of Windows Vista&8212;available for all editions of Windows Vista except Starter" Now, I have an x64 CPU architecture PC, 4 GB of system ram, and only the 32-bit version of Vista Premium* pre-installed*. And unless I'm mistaken, I'm only entitled to a Recovery disk that I create or order from Hewlett Packard. I don't want to buy an upgrade or full install of the 64-bit Ultimate Edition. However, I do want the 64-bit version of the Premium Edition instead. Microsoft says that I can get a 64-bit edition here: Even if it requires a custom install (AKA "fresh install), I'm OK with that. Can I obtain the 64-bit Premium Edition (if it exists)? Has anyone done this?

I was given a HP Compaq 6820s by a good friend with a bad hard drive. He had not made recovery discs, and HP can't supply them. I can replace the hard drive no problem, but don't want to fork over the $$$ for a new Vista OS. I have XP pro, but there seems to be too many issues with downgrading. I have the COA on the bottom of the computer. Since the OS was definitely paid for with the original purchase, can I get an OS from MS for this computer?

All of our laptops are purchased from HP and as of a few months ago come with Vista OEM licenses so licenses are not a problem. But as soon as we receive a new laptop it is imaged with XP removing the original windows vista installation and recovery partition. So we have no copy of Vista oem. I am running Windows VISTA Ultimate x64, do not have the original disk with me as i brought this computer to work on to my vacation spot to do some work. After running a botched program, I got a msg saying the computer would restart automaticly. Having extensive windows knowledge I know this is never a good situation to be in. I am using a windows x64 boot disk that i found from neosmart as I do not have access to the original disk.

I was thinking about using the recovery dvd's for my laptop. i use this pc for work and have thousands of email, onenote, vpn....etc. i understand this will erase my hard drive and one of the problems i am having is "windows back up" doesnt work (ironic)... is there some sort of way i can back up my computer then reinstall vista(use recovery dvd) and transfer that backup to my laptop. I want to create a recovery partition on my windows Vista laptop. Pretty much i want to be pompted when the pc boots to hit f10 and have a count down of 10 seconds. I know this would be done through boot.ini however i have no idea how to do so. Also id make a seperate partition on my hd of ten gigs just for the backup image.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.

After my PC was burned out by lightening through my Broadband connection I
received a new PC from my insurers with Win.Vista Business, but I did not

do it there and then, so thinking that this invitation will appear again I
cancelled it.
It is now some weeks and the invitation has not reappeared. Which way can I

I'm concerned my system may crash and I have no back up and recovery disk or Vista installation disk. I was told I could order one from the manufacturer but I'm wondering if there is a way to create one after setup. I have a XP Home Edition I suppose I could use but I would rather create a Vista backup, if possible.

I ran across this statement in Tutorials.
It needs some clarifications:
In Pavillion and Presario notebooks, HP Rec Mgr does more than just System restore. And btw, HP does not have its own version of SR. It runs Windows' version.
HP Rec Mgr has other functions: Re-install original software programs and hardware drivers and complete System Recovery restoring the original hard disk factory template. It can be utilized to create a set of recovery discs.
In HP Business notebook, Rec Mgr does not re-install software progs and drivers but does the others listed in Pavilion/Presario models.
I don't think HP Recovery Manager should be uninstalled. Or if perchance, he meant uninstalling System Restore, be aware that HP Rec Mgr will be unable to system restore on its own if Windows SR is unstalled or disabled.

But now, in my My Computer window, where it used to show my 2 hard drives plus the Recovery Drive, it no longer shows the Recovery Drive. I was relatively sure that space was partitioned off of my C drive, but it's not showing up. there's a possibility that a technician hid it while remotely accessing my system. Is there a way for me to check?
if there is no Recovery Drive, how much should I worry (it sure didn't help me LAST time the computer needed restoring)? I am planning to get an offsite backup a la Carbonite or an external drive for backups soon. For all I know, that makes the Recovery Drive a moot point anyway, but I'm not sure.
I am having a time and a half trying to create recovery DVD's. I keep getting the error message that "this computer does not have a drive capable of creating cds and dvds". I definitely have a dvd burner so I know that's not the actual problem. From the research I've done, I think I may have uninstalled some DVD softward that was pre-installed on my Windows Vista HP Pavilion TX2110us laptop. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. I desparately need to re-install Windows and I don't really want to do it without having the created recovery dvds.
