Mar 26, 2008Is there a recovery console in Vista? If so, How do you install it? Is the Starup the sane thing? Can it be installed other than uses it from the disk?

Jul 5, 2008I have the following issue and hope that somebody can give me a hint about what might be going on! My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):
1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

Apr 4, 2010I have a Sony Vaio VGN FZ11Z with Vista home premium. I seemed to have picked up a virus which stopped me from booting into normal mode and in Safe Mode there was constant access to the hard disk, no response from the mouse or keyboard and then it just rebooted. Start up repair couldn't find anything wrong. After trying to find a solution I decided to backup my data via the recovery DVD and do a complete system recovery. On the second part of the process where it is installing vista, after a restart I received a black screen titled "Windows Boot Manager" telling me a critical driver was missing or corrupt. I couldn't find any answers to this anywhere, so after trying Statup Repair again (which never finishes) I decided to wipe the disk before staring a sytem recovery again. This froze for a couple of hours on 80% so I stopped it. Now I have " The volume does not contain a recognized file system" when in the recovery console. I did a diagnostic on the hardware at the start of all this and no problems were reported. I have all my data, I have all the recovery disks, all I want to do is have a fresh start!!!!

Mar 23, 2008I'm having difficulty in parsing this quote from Microsofts own website "The 64-bit editions of Windows Vista&8212;available for all editions of Windows Vista except Starter" Now, I have an x64 CPU architecture PC, 4 GB of system ram, and only the 32-bit version of Vista Premium* pre-installed*. And unless I'm mistaken, I'm only entitled to a Recovery disk that I create or order from Hewlett Packard. I don't want to buy an upgrade or full install of the 64-bit Ultimate Edition. However, I do want the 64-bit version of the Premium Edition instead. Microsoft says that I can get a 64-bit edition here: Even if it requires a custom install (AKA "fresh install), I'm OK with that. Can I obtain the 64-bit Premium Edition (if it exists)? Has anyone done this?

Oct 1, 2009I was given a HP Compaq 6820s by a good friend with a bad hard drive. He had not made recovery discs, and HP can't supply them. I can replace the hard drive no problem, but don't want to fork over the $$$ for a new Vista OS. I have XP pro, but there seems to be too many issues with downgrading. I have the COA on the bottom of the computer. Since the OS was definitely paid for with the original purchase, can I get an OS from MS for this computer?

Aug 17, 2009Prior to formatting my computer my soundcard and its software worked perfectly however after i formatted, my creative audio console doesnt really work properly. For example. Before if i adjusted the master volume in the audio console, it would synronise and adjust the volume in the default windows sound mixer now it doesnt. Secondly before if i plugged in headphones the sound would autmatically go through the headphones and mute the speakers. Now if i open the console and go to the headphones section, I have mute speakers checked and automatically enable headphone settings checked and if i plug in my headphones, sound still comes out of speakers but if i press test in the audio console, the test lady voice comes through the headphones whilst other sounds still continues through the speakers. I have reinstalled the drivers twice now and updated the drivers.

I was thinking about using the recovery dvd's for my laptop. i use this pc for work and have thousands of email, onenote, vpn....etc. i understand this will erase my hard drive and one of the problems i am having is "windows back up" doesnt work (ironic)... is there some sort of way i can back up my computer then reinstall vista(use recovery dvd) and transfer that backup to my laptop. If i create an image with back up software will that just reinstall all the corrupted files (registry..etc)...is there anyway to reinstall vista without erasing the hard drive?

Jun 2, 2009I downloaded Windows 7 RC1 with the intent of adding a partition to my HDD and dual booting. My understanding is that I would need a 16GB partition. My Disk Management Console tells me I have two existing primary partitions (expected). D (the recovery partition) is 6.62GB. The other (C) makes up the difference (~142GB) and has 47.1GB free space. When I begin the "shrink volume" process, it says that only 3MB is available to shrink C. I checked the page file and it has less than 3GB allocated to it. So, I have two questions. First, why isn't more shrinkage ;>) space available? Two, assuming that with your help I can find more space, if I try to create a 16GB partition from C will I significantly affect computer performance?

Jan 18, 2009I've been getting this error message when I try to open certain control panel functions from the RUN command line or through the MMC console itself. Other functions like performance information, user accounts and parental controls don't respond when clicked. Windows update might flash up the beginnings of a window for a split second but wont load. I've got the update icon on my task bar saying it cant update. Other than some key function being inaccessible the PC runs fine (apart form Firefox has started crashing out every now again) I can install software ok.
I've run the SVG /scannow thing and it found no problem Its my home PC sp I am setup as administrator. This problem is effecting another vanilla admin account AND the hidden Admin account. I've virus scanned in safe mode. System restore went through the motions but after it had restarted the PC it said it couldn't actually restore........
