Cannot Install XP 32 On Partition In VISTA 64 - UNABLE TO FIND DRIVE

Dec 27, 2008

I have -Dell XPS 730x with 6 GIG DDR3 RAM, Intel i7 64 bit Processor, 500 GIG disk,

I am running -Windows Vista Home Premium 64 which was preinstalled on the cpu

I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32

So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.

I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running

The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!

I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful

The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM

I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.

I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.

Unable To Create New Partition

Dec 26, 2007

I'm trying to partition drive C but it won't let me. New laptop is Toshiba Satellite and had the store configure it for me since I'm new to Vista.

1. Through Disk Management, I shrink drive C and now have an unallocated space of 51G.

2. From the unallocated space, I create a new simple volume. It goes through the Wizard, but then I get the following error message: "The attempted operation is invalid. Either the parameters specified are invalid or the operation cannot be completed on the selected object."

3. The contour of the unallocated space is highlighted in black instead of green. Is that an indication of something? And shouldn't it say: Free space instead of unallocated? Additional info:.....

Unable To Create New Visible Partition

Jul 27, 2009

I have just purchased an Acer Aspire 8935g laptop, which comes with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit (not sure why 64bit isn't supplied). It has two 500gb hard drives; Disk 0 and Disk 1. Disk 1 is empty and I have successfully created 3 partions on this drive. According to Vista's Disk Management tool, Disk 0 contains three partitions. The first and last are both EISA Configuration partitions and can't be seen through Windows Explorer. The 2nd (middle) partition is the C: partition on which Vista is installed.

I want to install Windows 7 RC 64bit in a dual boot configuration, so I used Disk Manager to shrink the C: partition and then create a new 100gb partition. I assigned it the drive letter B: (there are no floppy drives on the laptop). The new B: partition is visible, along with the original C: partition through Windows Explorer, until I reboot the laptop. The B: partition then disappears and Windows Explorer can no longer see it, however Disk Management shows it is still there but it no longer has a drive letter and is now an EISA Configuration partition. I thought this issue might be caused by the choice of drive letter so I tried again using a different letter (F: ). Each time the drive is only visible to Windows Explorer until the laptop is rebooted. I've also tried using a different partition management tool (Partition Wizard) but it makes no difference. I've tried creating the partition as logical and primary but to no avail. explain Why can't I create a visible partition on my "O/S" drive?

Unable To Delete Partition For Fresh Install

Sep 12, 2009

I am having some problems with my drivers so I am trying to delete the partition on the operation system drive and do a fresh install, operating system and drivers. However, no matter what I do I cannot get my computer to boot from the windows vista DVD so I can delete the OS partition. Here is what I already tried:

- My BIOS is set to boot from CD ROM first

- I have tried both DVD drives

- I verified that the DVD is good by trying it in a different computer where it will boot from the DVD drive

- The DVD drive works because I can initiate installation from the DVD drive. But since it isn't on start-up, I cannot delete the partition and all the drivers.

How do I get this dang computer to recognize this DVD on boot?

Complete PC Backup Failed, Element Not Found 0x80070490

Jun 3, 2008

The backup is not failing, it says it's complete, but the file that it creates is less than 70GB, and my drive is 225GB full out of 279GB. The machine is running Vista Ultimate and running Vista Media Center. 157GB of the files are recorded shows, my music and pictures. I'm expecting a file closer to 225GB, especially since media files don't compress well (if this program compresses).

I find it awfully coincidental that 225 - 157 = 68, which is about the size of my backup file. The bigger problem is that I can't use the backup it creates. When I go to the restore operation, it finds the backup, I hit start and get back Restore Failed, element not found 0x80070490, which leads me to believe the backup is incomplete.

Unable To Find Files On Removed Hard Drive

Nov 22, 2009

My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).

The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.

XP Style Slow Search, Unable To Find This Primitive Operation?

Mar 23, 2008

I must be missing something obvious... How do I do an XP style search? You remember, right-click a folder, click "Search", and have Vista search the selected folder? I've been unable to find this primitive operation. I'm willing to give up search control to Vista for local drives, but indexing our entire network, and each and every USB stick/USB Hard drive seems, well, silly for the once or twice a month I need to search in those locations. I'm willing to wait the thirty seconds it takes to search, because I can normally limit the size of the search ("Let me look through the code tree for December", for example).

64 & 32 Duel Boot Gives Error Message : Winload.exe Could Not Find

Mar 23, 2008

I had an Vista 32 bit version installed and which was used fine.3 days before I had upgrade my PC's memory to 4G, then I find Vista 32 Bit version can not recognize all the memory. So I try to install an Vista 64 Bit version for the test to check if the 64 bit system is ok for me.

The problem is, Vista 32 was installed on to the 3rd partition of the harddisk, usually the drive letter will be E in Windows XP and previous version windows, although it in Vista it display as C drive. I tried to install the 64 Bit Vista in to the 4th partiton. After all the drivers and applications install completed, that seems so far so good. Then I find my previous F drive now names C. The Drive C in Vista 32 Bit names E now. When
I try to boot into Vista 32, the error message : winload.exe could not find.

I used bcdedit try to redirect the device and osdevice to E drive, Vista 32 still could not start normally, the system will hang up in the blue desktop background, seems can not load user profile or sth like that.

I have check the E drive, all the files of Vista 32 are still there.

If you are getting this error message and you've ran through the normal HD tests, and everything is coming out fine.. (this will blow your mind)Go and empty your C:/Users/yourusernamehere/AppData/Local/Temp folder of everything that you can.. just do a mass delete and skip any system files.. Voila.. You have a working machine again.. I dont know whether this is a bug, or what caused it.. But everything's ship shape here now.. I know that i'll be clearing that out more often from now on.. That was the first time i'd cleared it in a year and a half at least.

Unable To Open Attachments In Windows Mail: Windows Cannot Find File Name

Jul 29, 2009

There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

"Windows Is Unable To Find A System Volume That Meets Its Criteria For Installation"

I installed Vista a while back, on a system pretty much formatted this way:

partition 1: linux
partition 2: XP
partition 3: linux swap
partition 4: extended {
partition 5: linux home
partition 6: linux usr
partition 7: Vista

This worked fine. Perfectly, in fact, and I was really pleased with how smooth the Vista install went. I noticed that Vista installed its bootloader on partition 2. Since I was going to trash XP at some point, I figured I would cross this bridge when I got to it. I got to that bridge last night. It was time to install a different flavour of linux, and trash XP. But nothing's ever easy... I reinstalled linux so that things look more like:.........
