View 6 RepliesThe latency symptoms I described have disappeared although Disk Cleanup might have removed something that was clogging up IE8 and/or the desktop. Besides that I reactivated Windows Defender, updated and ran it. But it found nothing. I then ran the latest MS Malicious Software Removal Tool and it found nothing. And I ran another KIS sweep. It noted something like a Java update I needed and a Firefox update I needed and after updating those then found no vulnerabilities. I also unloaded the game DVD, 'Prototype' that was in the tray installed and ready to play.
And at some point after rebooting I tried IE8 again and left it running for most of a day and the latency in its Favorites or in the desktop Task Bar has not returned once since. I loaded the game DVD again and played it a few times but left the DVD with the tray closed and still no latency issue has returned. This had been bothering me a number of days prior in-between reboots and running many several apps in the course of a day and seeing this latency problem many times, which was usually what would drive me to reboot since that would clear up the problem for a while............
It all started with failed updates. Then I discovered that I couldn't run the check disk utility. A friend finally gave me a solution sfc /scannow in DOS which told me I had some corrupted files that windows couldn't fix. It told me to check out the log - but I couldn't find it. Now I discover (Having read a thread in VistaForums about the update error code 80070652) that I no longer have tabs in my Task Manager. aaaoorrrgh! I going nuts. how to restore these functions without losing all my data and updated drivers etc. (I'm not a beginner but I'm a sort of low level intermediate)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Premium Home SP1. When I boot my computer, Windows Defender doesn't start automatically. It works fine if I start it manually. I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem that I have found no solution for. At regular intervals Windows Mail starts and jumps to the foregroudn on its own without any action by me that would cause this behavior. Typical example is when playing a game/watching a video in full screen mode Mail jumps up and throws the other program in the background. This is extremely annoying, any suggestions on what might be causing this? I haved no mail accounts configured in Mail and I have tried to disable all automatic notifications and automatic checing for new messages.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Defender as an active part of my Laptop Security, and have it set to install updated Definitions automatically. This is run in conjunction with avast! v4.8 Home Edition - Free Anti-Virus, and with regular checks using Spybot Search and Destroy v1.6.2.46 - both kept right up to date. Regardless of the fact that at Windows Defender>Tools>Options, I have these settings, Windows Defender never automatically completes the set task, and I am sometimes reminded that a scan has not been done for 2-3 days, and then need to complete the job manually. The Laptop is always ON at this time, and I fail to see a reason why Windows Defender should fail to activate the set scan. It's a minor nuisance, but a nuisance all the same.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAttracted by the additional outbound protection offered, I decided to install Comodo. I seem to recall (but may be mistaken) that when I installed Comodo on an XP machine, Comodo automatically switched off the Windows firewall and Windows also recognised that Comodo was installed and had taken the place of the Windows firewall. Therefore I was surprised that after installing Comodo on my Vista machine that the Windows firewall was still on and when switched off still told me that I had no firewall. Is this correct behaviour or has my installation not gone correctly? Also, when I first log on I get a pop-up from Comodo telling me that svchost.exe is trying to access the internet - is that valid and what should my response be to set it permanently recognised as good?

View 5 Replies View Relatedwhen I had to open Internet Explorer (I use Mozilla) to access my school email account. Everything went fine and when I was done I reopened Mozilla to browse again. I got one of those annoying spam web popups saying I had a computer infection and clicked out of it. A few minutes later my pc just randomly rebooted. I have had viruses before but it has never shut down randomly before. So I immediately restarted in safemode and ran my spyware tools. I found 3 trojans (I no longer remember their names) and removed them. I rebooted and it starts to load windows but reboots before it reaches the user account screen. I can get into safe mode and I did run my spyware tools again, they didn't find anything at all. I figured I had somehow damaged my system and so I downloaded a windows repair disc and repairedit. It didn't work. I've run startup repair and that didn't work or find anything wrong either.

View 4 Replies View RelatedNo replies to my Call of Duty 4 problem thread question......I was still being kicked by Punkbuster. I reinstalled twice, updated Punkbuster and ran pbsvc.exe without success. This is the one change I made that has allowed me to play COD 4 without getting kicked by PB. I right-clicked the multiplayer icon and checked the run as XP service pack 2 compatible under the compatibility tab. I even disconnected my router and "gasp" turned of the Vista firewall to eliminate anything that might have blocked my connecting. *I have since enabled both firewalls*. I have been running it on and off for 2 days now, no errors. Try this and please let me know if it works for you. Then other people will hopefully find this thread.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Windows Mail 6.0 with Windows Vista home premium. About a month ago, in a fit of anger, I turned on a function that automatically sends a personalised reciept to every person that sends me an Email. My intent was to allow certain spammers to know exactly what I felt about them. However, innocent Emailers are complaining about my vulgarity and are wondering what their mother ever did to offend me. I have searched all of the mail functions, and I can find no way to turn this off.

I recently updated some drivers, particularly video and HP printer. Now my system has started limping. When I open any program, it takes for ever to open the program. Even after it is open, it takes a long to accept any keystroke. I am using Vista home premium 32 bit with 4 gigs of ram operating Dell Inspiron 531 AMD Athlon 5000 plus. I have full scanned with Norton IS2010 and Malware byte and Advanced System optimizer and found no malware.
