A few days ago, a message saying "windows detected a hard disk problem" appears when I log into Vista. Initially, nothing happen. Suddenly one day, my Vista started lagging(very serious). I therefore make it to be a USB external HD, and then try to copy the files. However, the HD stops working when reaching certain sector while copying. I attempt to repair it by using chkdsk tool and Seagate repair tool, the process stopped at a percentage. Any solution for me to copy my files please?
I recently installed Vista with on this machine with this new HD deatched though it had previously been used in this computer running xp. It is a IDE hard drive and although device manager recognizes it as a disk drive I cannot get windows explorer or disk management to notice it. It has a ntfs format.
Just finished building my new workstation....1x 250GB SATA drive on wich I want to install Vista Ultimate x64. 3x 500GB SATA drive wich i'd like to have running in Raid-5. Asus P5E motherboard.
My first take was this: 1) connect all HDD's 2) Install vista on 250GB drive, leave 500GB drives alone for now. 3) Update Vista. 4) Restart, enable RAID in BIOS. 5) Ctrl+I at startup, setup RAID-5 with the 3 500GB HDD's in RAIDmanager. So far so good..... RAID manager shows RAID-5 correctly and shows that 250GB drive isnon-raid. 6) Reset, problem: no startup *"No bootbable drives found"* In BIOS, it shows all drives under boot devices, and the 250GB drive asthe first boot disk.But before the 250GB name it sais RAID also, wich I guess it shouldnot.......
I recently received a multi port USB hub and plugged it into my laptop. It seemed like a good idea as I only had 2 USB ports on my computer. This gave me 4 where before I only had 1 which made a total of 5. I plugged a new external DVD burning drive into one of the multi ports ports. The drive used 2 ports, 1 for drive and 1 for drives power. I also plugged 2 external hard drives into the other 2 ports. The burning drive would not work and 1 of the external hard drives was not detected in computer.
I have four (4) hard disks C: D: E: F: all are connected with sata cable and power cable.(of course) The F: is outside from the pc and connected via external SATA and power cable (like usb NOT usb) I know,with USB external hard disk i can use the safely remove option.
Is there any option to safely remove SATA hard disk without Shut Down the pc?

1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?
I use the Vista Firewall plus AVG Free 8.0 together with Firefox 3.5 Browser with Adblock. I also carry out a periodic manual scan using AdAware Anniversary Edition free.
Vista comes with Windows Defender, but in the 2 years I have had Vista, whenever I have scanned with it, it always reports 'no unwanted or harmful software detected - your computer is running normally!' Very reassuring or what? Does this mean everything else is doing a really good job or could it mean that Windows Defender is really not much use?
After spending many hours, I have at last got Windows Mail working perfectly. I uninstalled my McAfee (that wasn't straightforward), deleted my accounts from Windows Mail - then re-instated them, and installed AVG.
Hi, new here. I have a sony vaio laptop that has been working perfectly up until a few days ago. I got a blue screen that said unmountable boot volume. I have a vista restore/repair disk but no sony restore disks.I'm not really sure if mine came with any? I used the vista disk and when i try to repair it it says no hard disk found as the error. Is there a way to get my computer to see the hard disk? I've tried using the command prompt but a lot of things i've tried like chkdsk aren't working or i'm not sure what they mean.
I have had a problem where, apparently at random, my hard drive starts running and ties up my laptop to the point nothing will run. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes. I have not been able to reproduce this on purpose, but yesterday it happened 3 times when I started either Outlook or Foxfire. Today it happened when I tried to sync my PDA. I have tried to turn off any indexing I can find, but no help. It doesn't always happen every day, but will do it several times a week. I am running on a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium.
We have 2 identical Dell XPS desktop PCs, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium SP1.For a few years now we've been using a Linksys cable modem which has 4 Ethernet outlets (numbered 1-4) and paired antennas for Wireless-G. My PC was on Ethernet output 1 and my wife's PC was on a Wireless-G adapter. Recently my ISP doubled its speed to 16,000 kbps, but this seemed to have very little effect on my wife's Wireless speed. Rather than hassle with the wireless system, I uninstalled the Wireless-G adapter and ran a new Ethernet cable from output 2 to my wife's PC.The weird thing is that when both PCs are turned on and connected to the Internet, my PC (Ethernet 1 output) seems to be continuallyaccessing the hard drive. While this is happening, the output 1 and output 2 LED's on the modem are madly flickering, as is the disk access light on the PC. No unusual hard disk activity is going on with the wife's PC. If I shut down either PC, this excessive hard disk activity doesn't take place and the output light (1 or 2) is steady. I've even tried leaving both systems totally inactive for many hours, other than an automatic check for mail every 5 minutes.
Every 1/2 hour or so I'd look in and see that the hard drive activity is still going on and the output lights are flickering. Whatever is going on is happening whether the PCs are active or idle. This has been going on for 3 days now, 16 hours a day, ever since I added the new Ethernet line!
if there are any good hard disk utilities available that perform more comprehensive testing/correction than those performed by Windows own check disk utility?
i have a sata hard drive running windows vista 32 business. how would i format the hard drive completely and start again? i did a reinstall last weekend but it would not give me the option for format from the DVD, it just gave me a "windows.old" folder which wasn't really what i wanted.
I am using Vista Home Premium, so I do not have the CompletePC Backup feature, sadly. I just finished reinstalling VISTA and a ton of programs, only to realize stupidly that I am running out of hard disk space because of all the downloading I am doing. It would be pure hell to have to reinstall everything again.
I want to replace my hard drive with one with double the capacity. Can I copy / backup / whatever the entire c drive on to an external drive, then copy the entire contents back on to the new disk drive? Apparently, I have to purchase a product such as Acronis True Image Family.
I've used this forum A LOT to find answers to the many problems I've had with my pc - now I have one that I can't find a solution for, so here I am posting! I'm trying to format a new Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB hdd but it won't go any further than 73%. Computer Management tells me that its still formatting (i.e. NO error message) but its been there for hours. I've tried formatting from the Vista installation cd during boot but it plain refused (I forget the error message), it won't even do a quick format in Computer Management. Is my drive humped?
I can't afford to lose any of my data (who can?), I'd like to have something on my laptop that monitors the hard drive - and any external USB drives. Free is good but I also want quality. Perhaps some readers have suggestions for software for me? Don't worry, I keep an external hard drive for backup and use it often. But, it wouldn't hurt if I had something to monitor my drives. The external hard drives crap out to often and leave me without a backup until I replace it.
Hey again I???m here as a new user of vista and Im going trough a bunch of problems. As for now one day I ran the diskeeper and some how I lost 45 GB of hard disk space for no real reason. After that I ran it again but it didnt help, I don???t know if it has to do with the diskeeper or maybe some other type of problem with the computer applications.
Recnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station. Here are the menu list by right clicking on the HDD's.
How do you exactly partition a hard drive or can some one tell me a good place to get a partitioning program or website for a free partitioning program downlaod and what is a good program cause i want to get a good program and not a peice of crud.
I've basically screwed up documents and important stuff so i need help reinstalling vista from the dvd, Formatting the hard drive. My M/B is a ga-p35-ds3l and i cant use my keyboard if the shut down is forced it auto chooses.

For some reason, I cannot see a 1TB hard disk in Vista Explorer. There are no relevant messages in the event logs etc. I can save data to it (via apps, word, excel, downloads etc). I just cannot see it in windows when I go to my computer. Also, can't seem to find anything pertinent on the web, lost about a vista drive not being seen by windows 7 (vice versa), but not what I am looking for. My concern is that if Windows won't display the drive, it may be going bad and it's only 6 months old. Any pointer(s)
The only way I am able to boot his with a political CD/DVD in the drive, wait for the "press any key to boot from CD or DVD" prompt comes up, do not hit any key whatsoever and then the normal user prompt/enter password screen comes up. Additionally if I try to "Safe Mode Boot" I Blue Screen.
Am reinstalling Windows Vista after a virus infected my PC. I am reinstalling vista but after booting from DVD Vista does not recognise my SATA hard disk on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen. There are no issues with the hard disk and this happened once before but I can't remember how I solved this. My problem is the Vista installer not recognising my hard disk so I can install Vista. I have an Alienware pc with hitachi deskstar hard disk and asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard. I have to reinstall as a virus has caused my windows explorer to malfunction and it also installed a trojan which stole my key. I have tried a couple of ASUS raid drivers via a usb hard disk with no luck. We can't find any appropriate hitachi drivers. I think this is related to the hard disk controller?
My system was working fine the other day, but while copying a file by nero?.the system hanged and I had to restart it. But I got a disk boot failure error. Then , I tried to run a windows xp installation CD, but that is also showing some error message during installation and the installation fails. I did check the bios settings and the disk fails to show?and had it checked on another system also? but bios cannot detect the hard disk.
I have a total of around 196 GB of hard disk space in my c:// drive and no data in it at all instead of my operating system(vista) and other installation files. every 1 or 2 days, my free hard disk space on this drive becomes less even though i am not saving anything at all on this drive, The total of all the files including all hidden system file is also different(Less) than the total total used space on my hard-disk. I have had a disk cleanup, cleaned internet files and cookies.The automatic file back up system in system tools is also turned off. The problem has already consumed nearly 15 - 17 gb of my hard disk space and still continuing to do so as i keep using my computer,.
