Backing Up Large File To DVD

Oct 30, 2009

I have a 13Gb image backup which I would like to copy to DVD. Is there a utility which will split this file (and recombine it) into DVD size chunks which I can then copy to disk? Or a DVD burning utility which will do this automatically?

Bought 64bit Instead Of 32bit

May 20, 2008

I recently purchased an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 64bit. Stupid mistake, as my machine (AMD Athlon64 5600+X2 Dual Core, 4gb ram) can only run 32bit. Since I was already running a "lite version" of the 32bit software in my pc, I decided to enter the license key and activate the program. I have downloaded all updates available through WU, but so far no SP1. I checked the forum and followed some instructions about updating drivers etc in order to finally get SP1 through WU, but have had no success so far. Since my "lite version" is missing some components, I was wondering if there is anyway I can get the correct 32bit version from Microsoft, after all my license key should be go for both 64bit and 32bit.

"Windows Failed To Load Because A File Is Missing Or Corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221

Oct 15, 2009

when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

Visual C++ Installation - Cannot Read Data File

May 10, 2009

I am having installation problems with a Polish/English Multimedia dictionary. At the start of install I get a pop-up advising that the program needs to install MS Visual C++ 2005 SP1 to run properly. When I click OK it commences the installation of Visual C++ but does not complete the configuration stage before the installation of the dictionary software starts.

The dictionary installation then continues without problem ok but when I try to run it I get an error message that the program cannot read the data file and that I should reinstall again. Also, I note that Visual C++ has failed to install.

The software is Vista compatable and does install ok (including the Visual C++) when I tried it on a on a Vista x86 latop. I have tried installation with UAC disabled, Norton Internet security disabled, even tried installing it in safe mode with a hack to run Windows installer. I have run all installations as Administrator.

Also tried a separate install of Visual C++ 2005 SP1 and also the 2008 version but the dictionary software does not recognise either. To get the 2005 version installed I had to first install the base pack and then the SP1 version, but then I have no idea if it has installed properly.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv 3510nr and OS is Vista Home Premium x64 and I bought it about 4 weeks ago in the US. Maybe there is a running service that is conflicting with the software installation, I have no idea.

File BootBCD : Error Occured Read The Boot

Apr 9, 2008

I ran windows update and the updates failed, I have sorted that out by stopping one update but now the computer wont boot without the vista disc being there. On start up everything is ok, it gets to verifying DMI datapool and I get a message something like File BootBCD - an error occured while attempting to read the boot config data ox000000f. I have run windows start up repair & this says it cant find a problem. I have used bootrec /scan and it returned 0 windows installs, /rebuild & Fixboot did nothing, I havent tried FixMbr cos I dont understand what that does and I dont want to make the problem worse - so long as I have the cd in I can ignore when it says press any key to boot from cd & it starts but why do I have to have the cd in? I tried one system restore but that made no difference, it seemed to say boot info wasnt part of the restore & I cant see anywhere to say I want that included but thats another question!

Reloaded Vista Can Read File Bad Hard Drive

Mar 1, 2009

Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied?

Windows Failed To Start: ERROR "cannot Create A File When That File Already Exists" (0x800700b7)

Mar 23, 2008

My elderly Mother's Vista PC isn't working, and as she relies on this for shopping etc I need to get it working (I am several hundred miles from her). The PC tried to install the latest Vista updates (20/2/2008) but upon restart she gets the message "Windows failed to restart - a recent hardware/software change may be the cause - File windowssystem32winload.exe "The selected file could not be loaded". She doesn't have a start in "normal mode" option. I have walked her through trying system repair/restore using the Vista installation Cd, but after trying to restore she gets the message; "system restore failed due to an unspecified error; "cannot create a file when that file already exists" (0x800700b7) We have tried 3 different restore points with the same result.

Extenstion Failed Cannot Open File Extend.dat

Nov 25, 2008

So I'm certain this is posted here somewhere, but I can't spend the hours needed to find it...so sorry for probably repeating something. I just purchased a computer with Vista 64 bit, even though I had my reservations about the OS. I then migrated some data from my last laptop and installed my copy of Office 2007 Enterprise. I imported my personal folders into outlook, which seemed fine. I set up my email account and noticed that I could send emails from my outlook (using an internet email account from a work server) but not receive. I also started noticing this error when running outlook: "An extension failed to initialize. Cannot open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it or it may be open in another program..." I looked around the internet and tried to find a fix for this error. Most places said to find the file and rename it. I have searched every way possible and cannot find the file to rename it. I'm not sure if this is even related to why I cannot receive email.

In addition, when running outlook, I also periodically receive the error "Your AutoCorrect file, MSO1033.acl could not be saved. The file may be read only, or you may not have permission to modify the file." I also get this permission language at the bottom of the previous error message. Upon exiting outlook I get a similar error about not being able to save a file. It then opens a dialog box for me save the file as a macro enabled template...I receive basically the same errors (without the enable.dat error) when running Word. None of the other programs seem affected. This is supposed to be a work PC and if I cannot properly run word and outlook, it will prove quite pointless. I had no problems running this copy of Office on my last computer, which was running XP. I have installed all the windows and office updates, as far as I know.

Windows Failed To Start: Boot Critical File

Feb 13, 2009

I lost power to my home and my battery backup gave out before I got home to safely shutdown (I don’t normally lose power long enough to wipe out my backup). When power came back on I rebooted Vista 32Bit and was able to login but there were errors (which I did not record). Vista informed me there were errors and suggested I reboot and run CHKDSK. I tried to run chkdsk next time windows load but after my bios loaded I had nothing but a Black screen. I waited for 8 hours and still black screen. So I booted from my Factory Dell CD and Vista was unable to repair automatically.

Boot critical file C:Windowssystem32driversWdf0100.sys is corrupt
Boot critical file C:WDFLDR.SYS is corrupt.

To OEM Version Or Not To OEM Version: Restriction In The License Means It Cannot Be Transferred To Another Computer

Jun 4, 2008

If I get the OEM version, I know that a restriction in the license means it cannot be transferred to another computer. I need to get clarification on the following:

1) What happens if my computer crashes and I am told I have to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows? Am I forced to buy a new license?

2) What if I want to have a backup hard drive, or upgrade my existing hard drive to a bigger one? If it's the same computer and only the hard drive is upgraded or a second one added, does that mandate a new license?

Ultimate Crash: Failed Check The File System Integrity Check

Mar 26, 2008

Vista started giving a blue screen a couple of days ago. Mentioned something about a bad device, but no new devices have been added. Went through the typical steps, tried to boot in safe mode and got the following errors:

AtBroker.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK.
Explorer.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Blue Screen

Then booted to my install dvd, tried to fix errors. Came back with a failed check at the file system integrity check. Ran the check a second time and no errors are found. Can't boot in safe mode, and when i try to repair errors I get no errors found.

Backing Up Files On DVD?

Jun 2, 2010

I have just finished a back-up of my files as of June 30th, It took 5 DVD's to complete using the "Back Up Program" on my Vista Home Premium, 32 bit start menu. Does this sound reasonable? If it became necessary to restore my files following a hard disc problem, would all my spreadsheets, letters, programs, registry, desk top, etc. be restored to the condition they are now? If not, what would likely be lost? As you see, I am not very knowledgeable concerning computer details.

Backing Up My Computer With Vista

May 13, 2009

I started using Vista recently, after I bought a laptop with Vista preinstalled. When prompted, I made a Vista recovery disc. So, hopefully, I am protected, if the operating system gets corrupted on my hard drive. Next, I wanted to also back up the rest of my hard drive (data, programs, file structure, etc.) so that if my hard drive got corrupted, I can reinstall Vista using the recovery disc, then reinstall the rest of my data and program files using my hard drive backup copy. To make a hard drive backup copy, I purchased a standalone hard drive with a USB plug. The portable drive is about 50GB bigger than my laptop's hard drive. I then used Vista's Control Panel/System and Maintenance/Backup Your Computer.

This method of backing up my hard drive took ages (several hours) which surprised me, as the entire contents of my hard drive only amounts to 96.5 GB. I later foud out why: Vista had, wile in the process of backing up my hard drive, compressed everything into a lot of roughly-equal-sized zip files. What I am aiming for is a way to reinstall my entire hard drive contents, Vista and all, in a simple, quick way, so that my laptop will be the same as it was before the file corruption occurred.

To achieve this, can I not simply drag-and-drop my laptop's C: drive into the standalone drive? I think that avoiding file compression would also lessen the possibility of data degradation or corruption during the process. I've known image files, in particular, suffer badly from the compression and subsequent decompression. Then, when I want to retore my hard drive, I can simply drag-and-drop the contents of the standalobe drive into "computer" in Vista's file manager, yes?
