Cannot Read The File Backup Cd
May 5, 2009
I burned data from my XP installation prior to installing Vista Home 32bit. I checked that the data on my backups were readable using Nero. Now I have 2 programs I want to intall on my Vista, but Vista says it cannot read the files on the backup CD. I am able to see that the files are there as I can get their size.

I am having installation problems with a Polish/English Multimedia dictionary. At the start of install I get a pop-up advising that the program needs to install MS Visual C++ 2005 SP1 to run properly. When I click OK it commences the installation of Visual C++ but does not complete the configuration stage before the installation of the dictionary software starts.
The dictionary installation then continues without problem ok but when I try to run it I get an error message that the program cannot read the data file and that I should reinstall again. Also, I note that Visual C++ has failed to install.
The software is Vista compatable and does install ok (including the Visual C++) when I tried it on a on a Vista x86 latop. I have tried installation with UAC disabled, Norton Internet security disabled, even tried installing it in safe mode with a hack to run Windows installer. I have run all installations as Administrator.
Also tried a separate install of Visual C++ 2005 SP1 and also the 2008 version but the dictionary software does not recognise either. To get the 2005 version installed I had to first install the base pack and then the SP1 version, but then I have no idea if it has installed properly.
My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv 3510nr and OS is Vista Home Premium x64 and I bought it about 4 weeks ago in the US. Maybe there is a running service that is conflicting with the software installation, I have no idea.

I ran windows update and the updates failed, I have sorted that out by stopping one update but now the computer wont boot without the vista disc being there. On start up everything is ok, it gets to verifying DMI datapool and I get a message something like File BootBCD - an error occured while attempting to read the boot config data ox000000f. I have run windows start up repair & this says it cant find a problem. I have used bootrec /scan and it returned 0 windows installs, /rebuild & Fixboot did nothing, I havent tried FixMbr cos I dont understand what that does and I dont want to make the problem worse - so long as I have the cd in I can ignore when it says press any key to boot from cd & it starts but why do I have to have the cd in? I tried one system restore but that made no difference, it seemed to say boot info wasnt part of the restore & I cant see anywhere to say I want that included but thats another question!

Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied?

I have a Vista Enterprise (SP1) and am trying to make file backup. As you know when we were running XP the backup tool allowed backing up data from mapped network drives and even would allow you to brows the network and (when provided with the right credentials) connect to certain network drives to chose data areas to bakup. Unless I am being very silly I just can not (forthe lif eof me) find out how to back up network drives. Ihave correctly mapped the drives with full permission but the mapped drive simply does not appear in the list of available areas to back up.

Where are the email folders so that I can back them up on an external backup drive?I can't find them in the directory list.I want to make sure they are all backed up like I do the old XP external backup drive.I would like to be able to recover my saved emails if I have a system crash and recovery. It has happened before on the XP system and I had them saved and restored to the Outlook Express program in it.As of now I have been backing up everything in Vista under my personal directory, which includes Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, etc. This Vista is a factory install OS.

I just accidently lost a JSP file (it's a type of file, eg., somefile.jsp) and went to Backup and Restore to recover the file. Much to my shock and horror, it looks like no JSP files were backed up, even though I have all checkboxes checked in the Backup configuration and have regularly run backup. How do I get the Backup and Restore program to backup all files types? If Backup and Restore can't do it, is there something I can load (eg., maybe the old XP Pro backup) from Microsoft?

New Dell PC Running Vista, Office 2007 & Nornton Internet Security ......Am trying to backup Outlook 2007 pst file from one computer to another on our network. I can copy and paste any other file from the originating computer to the destination folder without a problem. (Sharing is enabled.)But I cannot use the Outlook backup procedure, nor can I simply copy the pst file and paste it to the destination folder over the network.
When I attempt a backup or a copy/paste (with Outlook closed) I get the same reaction. The "wheels turn" for about 60seconds then an error message pops up saying "There is a problem accessing [path and pst file name]". I checked Task Manager and verified Outlook.exe is not open. Some how it is glued in place. But I can copy/paste it to a folder on the same machine. I just can't move it over the network. I posted a description of this issue on the Outlook forum but no one has come up with a solution.

I occasionally (every 3 months) back up my hard drives (I am using three computers, all similarly configured) to an external storage device. I tend to back up the My Documents folders somewhat more frequently (monthly). My two desktops are Vista 64s, and the laptop is a Vista 32-bit. I use the laptop as the master, so to speak, and will occasionally update the My Documents folders of the desktops from this machine.
I sometimes overwrite the same file on the desktops with an older file from the laptop. What I would really like is an easy to use piece of software that updates a file only if it is newer (later time stamp) than what is being updated. This would run much more quickly, and also prevent me from overwriting newer files.

I have been interested to note that large numbers of forum members have home networks that consist of multiple PC's w/diff OS's and it made me wonder what backup/restore/file sharing strategies people have put in place to help them with the management of their networks. Now....I like to play/overclock/tweak/etc or windows update/Nvidia drivers/ Java upgrades/ etc sometimes break something unexpectedly which ends up with me needing to recover files, drivers and/or something else. I have noticed that restore points help but do not allow for complete recovery of all the files and folders on my pc's so I needed to use a different strategy to accomplish my needs.
In my case, I came down on the side of "Windows Home Server" to provide the above mentioned services because the OS now costs under $100 and will run on an older re-purposed pc (I built mine from scratch but the the principle remains the same). Drives are cheap (I use 5 drives in my server) and the OS will mirror the data in the shared folders across multiple drives so I don't lose valuable pictures (I would hate to have to explain to my wife that I lost the pictures of our kids or grandchildren and can't get them back), software, or the pc backups that will be needed sooner or later. The home server even monitors if my pc's have been backed up regularly or need to be backed (and notifies me should one need to be backed up, the default backup schedule is daily or I can manually backup after I make changes) and it even cleans up the backups for me retaining however many I tell it (default I believe is 3-daily, 4-weekly, 3-monthly) so I don't have to be bothered with the administration. Now I only have to maintain the files I share in one location (even my music library) and I just point to the shared file on the server from 5 different computers and because the restore can be down to a single file or folder instead of only the complete system I have been able to turn off restore points on the individual pc's and use this space for other uses.....

My computer crashed & I had to repair the system. The User that I entered is "xxxxxx". When I restored my backup files to their original location my mail box, which I had relocated from its default location to "Documents", reinstalled to the user name of my original installation "xxx". I then started Windows Mail and selected the mail box to that location. However when I try to restart Windows Mail I get the following "Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to openthe Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mailmailbox data is currently being used by another program...............(0x800C0155)"When I click OK I get a window showing "Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Is there a solution other than repairing Vista again?

upgrade HD from 60G to 250G without having to reinstall all files and programs. Windows Complete PC Restore cannot see DVD with backup image file
1. Backed up C: using Windows Complete PC Backup. (6 DVDs no errors.)
2. Removed old HD and inserted new.
3. Booted Windows Vista install DVD. (I proceeded to partition HD but did not complete the install.)
4. From Windows Recovery Environment, I chose Windows Complete PC Restore.
5. Inserted Backup image DVD disc1.
6. When it looked for the location of the image it couldn't find it so it fails.

I purchased a WD 500 GB external, and used windows backup. It worked fine. I was planing to return my laptop for repairs because it was making funny sounds, so i deleted all my documents/music/pictures and so on. When i went to restore everything, I got a pretty nasty problem.
everything was restored, but stored on the F: drive, which is the external. when ever i would start up the computer, without the external plugged in, it would give me an error saying that the desktop wasn't found and that it was in different folder. there was also a problem with Microsoft office, which when ever i would open Word 2007 it would say "the office open xml file Normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."
then it would give me a second error message "Word cannot open the existing file. (normal) i would also get this same error when opening up any existing word file. when i would write things up and then go to save it, it says that "word has insufficient memory. do you want to save document one as rescued document 2?" i have a similar problem with itunes

I always use vista complete backup (Disk Image) to backup both my hard disks, but I am a bit confused as to the restore options. Basically, I have a sneaky suspition that one of the drives is going to fail in the near future, so I backup quite regularly, but when I replace it, I want to get a bigger drive, as it's only a 150gig raptor, and I really would prefer a 500 or 1TB 7200rpm drive for storage.
Can vista restore the files I backed up on D: (the 150gig) to a new D: which would be a large disk ? If it can, could I also do the same for C: which is where vista is located? If that doesn't work,

My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

I've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.

I have a lot of misc. cds that a friend who passed away made. They are pics & music mostly. Some slide shows too but I can't get them to open anywhere.
I told his wife I'd go through them but impossible if my computer won't read them. I believe most of them were made on XP and I have Vista. Called Gateway but they didn't know. I tried a couple on an HP with XP and they all were read. Does anyone know if this is a Vista problem or is it my computer?
My warranty is up in May so I'm hoping if it's the computer I'll have time to get it fixed under warranty.

Another Vista Ultimate 32bit weird prob I have. Whenever I insert any disc be it CD/DVD, and I double-click on the DVD icon to open it, I keep getting "Prepare this disc" option to Live format the disc. The disc could be anything a closed session disc, a manufacturer disc, I keep getting this prob. So only two ways to go ahead.
1. I've DOpus - Directory Opus, an alternative to Windows Explorer in which I can Sometimes view the disc, though not always
2. The best way I've figured out is for me to simply click "Next" and wait for Windows to tell me that it cannot format my disc and then I can access the contents.
3. Auto-run registry fix doesnt cure it. (updated after flavirus replied)
Any Ideas why this is happening? I uninstalled the drivers of my drives, I've two, Sony DVD-writer SATA and Lite-on DVD-writer IDE. In WinXP I didn't have this prob with these drives, so i know this is a software issue.

I have an emachine w3619 with dual core 2160 intel, 1.5 gig ram and windows vista 32 bit home premium. Recently my cd/dvd drive stopped reading cds. When i went into device manager it said the device was functioning properly and the drivers were up to date. I uninstalled the cd/dvd rom drive and restarted that did not fix the problem either. I deleted the upper and lower filters through regedit as some people had mentioned this did not fix the problem for me. My cd/dvd rom shows up in "computer" but always acts as if the drive is empty. The tab on the SD card is in the unlock position. I have tried using the properties window to change it but their is no option to change it from Read Only or Change Permissions. If I click on a folder on the SD card and try to change it via the Properties Windows the window says that it is "Read Only" but when I uncheck "Read Only," it says I can't
because the disk is Read Only. And again I can't find any option to change

I have copied all my internet favourites folders in from Windows XP (IE7). I didn't use a password in XP and still don't in Vista.
Now, I can't organise or add-to any of the folders in Vista. It says they are read-only.
When I display the properties of the folders, they have a green square (mixed content) in the read-only tick-box. I switch it off and accept the prompt which says that it will apply to files and sub-folders.
But when I go to use them they are still read-only, and when I look at their properties, they are unchanged - still flagged with mixed content. And I still can't organise or add to them.
