Jun 13, 2008I have been using bitlocker on a Sony Vaio - with TPM. Yesterday someone used my PC to check an XP installation CD. They booted from the CD and when they reached the setup screen, they exited. After that I had to enter my key as I booted the PC - indicating that bitlocker had detected a change. The way to stop having to do that is to turn bitlocker off and then on again.I turned bitlocker off, but when I went to turn it one again, it tells me that my system is not configured to use Bitlocker. It tells me to remove any bootable CD or DVD and reboot and if that doesn't help to upgrade my BIOS. There are no CDs or DVDs and my BIOS is the latest version - and was working yesterday with Bitlocker. I am assuming that the XP instalation CD has in some way altered my disk drive so that it no longer appears to be configured to use Bitlocker. I have run the Drive Preparation Tool,

But, if you steal a computer, there are lots of tools on the 'net that will crack logon passwords. How does Bitlocker help in these situations? If someone can crack the logon password, then they *are* the person that the BitLocker disks are decrypted for.

Aug 15, 2008i have just purchased by new machine which came with vista ultimate 64bit SP1 pre installed. the bit locker will not work as there is no TPM found is says a TPM is required to turn on bitlocker. i know you can use a flash drive every time you start up the machine but i dont want to do that. Does anyone know how i can get a TPM or know a solution - i read something about upgrading the bios but i dont know what bios i have!

Apr 15, 2008How can I confirm that BitLocker is indeed turned off? Microsoft provides the instructions below, but this is after it has been on. I see no BitLocker options under Control Panel, Scenario 5: Turning off BitLocker Drive Encryption Scenario 5 describes how to turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption and decrypt the volume. The procedure is the same for all BitLocker Drive Encryption configurations on TPM-equipped computers and computers without a compatible TPM. When you turn off BitLocker, you can choose to either disable BitLocker temporarily, or to decrypt the drive. Disabling BitLocker allows TPM changes and operating system upgrades. Decrypting the drive means that the volume will once again be readable, and that all the keys are discarded. Once a volume is decrypted, you must generate new keys by going through the encryption process again.
Before you start You must be logged on as an administrator. The drive must be encrypted. To turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption Click Start, click Control Panel, click Security, and then clickBitLocker Drive Encryption. From the BitLocker Drive Encryption screen, find the volume on which you want BitLocker Drive Encryption turned off, and click Turn Off BitLocker Drive Encryption. From the What level of decryption do you wantdialog box, click either Disable BitLocker Drive Encryption or Decrypt the volume as needed. By completing this procedure, you have decrypted the operating system volume.
Use BitLocker Drive Encryption Without TPM Chip
Mar 27, 2007Windows Vista includes a new hard drive encryption feature called BitLocker Drive Encryption. BitLocker can be a very useful security feature for businesses and home users that have sensitive and confidential information stored on their computer. Unfortunately, BitLocker Drive Encryption by default requires a Trusted Platform Module (TPM Chip) version 1.2 or later installed in your computer. A lot of the computers and laptops on the market do not come with TPM chips installed since they are typically only found in premium model business computers. If you have Windows Vista Business, Ultimate or Enterprise but do not have a TPM chip, you can still use BitLocker Drive Encryption.
Hidden away in local group policy is a setting that will allow you to turn on the ability to use a USB storage device instead of a TPM key to store the encryption key. This is a great feature for users that don't have the latest high-end hardware because you can still use hard drive encryption. However, every time you turn on your computer, the USB storage device that has the encryption key located on it must be plugged in. Without it, your computer will not boot up. One BitLocker Drive Encryption is setup with a USB storage device, that USB storage device basically becomes the key to your computer.
Follow these steps to turn on the ability to use a USB storage device with BitLocker Drive Encryption on hardware that does not have a TPM device:

1 Can I still use the Bitlocker feature of Windows Vista with a TPM module or USB flash drive? 2 Are there any articles that document how secure Bitlocker is in keeping your data safe if your laptop is stolen? 3 If for some reason that operating system gets corrupt, is there a way to extract my data off of the hard drive if I have the encryption keys?

1. non-Microsoft software updates will require you to completely disable BitLocker before you start
2. System upgrades will require you to decrypt the volume
3. Only volume containing OS and system files will be encrypted. Other volumes are nto encrypted by bitlocker but can be encrypted using EFS. Will there be any support for bitlocker using certificates issued by Active Directory enabled PKI services? (microsoft certificate services)
Toshiba Tecra M5 BIOS Support For Bitlocker In TPM Mode?
Mar 23, 2008I have a Tecra M5 (PTM51E) running Vista Ultimate. I would like to configure Bitlocker using the TPM which is on board. I am aware that Bitlocker can be used without a TPM, but this requires the user to have an external token e.g. on a USB drive which they have to insert at boot time. I would rather use the TPM mode so there will be no need for this.
I have flashed the BIOS to v3.60 which is the latest. Before I was able to flash the BIOS from within Vista (which is the only option provided on the Toshiba European support site) I found I had to load the drivers for the "Value Added Package", without this the BIOS updater simply says "Computer not supported". Another way to do it is get the BIOS for the PTM51U from the US site which allows you to write the BIOS updater onto a bootable floppy...........

The Vista scores cannot be taken as a true benchmark unless you use a benchmarking utility written specifically for Vista, such as PCMark Vantage. You can then compare scores between yours and other Vista installations. But unless you find a utility that can correctly test and recognize the differences between both XP and Vista, you cannot accurately compare scores.

May 27, 2010A friend of mine has been locked out of his Dell laptop and cannot find the password for the single account that it has. The laptop has Vista Ultimate installed on it and I am unable to activate the hidden administrator's account to get into Vista. Other investigations using other software shows only 2 accounts, Administrator and Guest but not the actual user single account that shows up onto the login screen. ( I have managed to blank out the Administrator and Guest passwords ) I have a standard Vista Recovery Disk , but I am unable to either repair or re-install Vista from the Dell hidden partition , and the only alternative is to install a unused retail version of Vista Home Premium that my friend has been given awhile ago. 2) if I install this retail version of Home Premium on the Dell laptop, will I have problems with the propriety hardware that is on the Dell laptop and would I need to find all the Dell drivers for the laptop?

Jun 13, 2008The often heard recurring theme spread by no nothing trolls and fanboys is if Vista isn't working right, it must be something you did rather than owning up to how badly Vista is designed once you start poking around and SEE how badly implemented it is. Much of the frustration with Vista comes from it's applets crashing or acting up for no apparent reason. Since these applets are INTERNAL and built-in as part of Vista's core the often heard excuse it's some third party driver, a hardware problem or other software you installed is proven to be bogus.
When something happens to either crash or slow down Vista it usually gets documented in Vista's Error Logs. However like most everything else Microsoft does, the logs are of little actual value other than pointing to how poorly designed and broken Vista really is.
To illustrate how broken Vista is, here's my experience this morning. As usual I started my day going to Google (my default home page) and clicking on News to see what the headlines were. Microsoft's browser hung. Waiting for it to respond, after 90 seconds I gave up and sure enough was treated to the usual BS asking if you want to wait longer or shut it down. I shut IE7 down. Created Another Partition On My Drive For Vista X64. (two Other Partitions Running Vista X86)
Mar 14, 2008I'm new to Vista x64 (the op sys as well as this site). I have just endeavored to try out Vista 64 bit on one of my workstations. I run VMWare Workstation at work and can use the additional memory addressing of Vista 64 (I have 4 gigs of RAM). nyway, my problem is this.
1) I created another partition on my drive for Vista x64. (two other partitions running Vista x86).
2) I have been running dual boot with Vista for quite a while and it runs fine.
3) After creating the new partition and installing Vista x64 with SP1 (integrated service pack on install DVD), I get drive corruption problems all over the place.
I have 3 500 gigabyte Western Digital drives in this machine. The first is for operating system partitions and the second strictly for backup (using Acronis True Image) and the third for data. The data drive seems to have problems reading when I attempt to install additional drivers for the x64 bit environment (just downloaded from the web). Also, I soon will get errors afterwards on the C drive also.

Currently I switch these in the BIOS, but I'd much rather chose at a later stage, can this be done? Why? Because I keep one of the drives for random software that I rarely use.

Jun 30, 2008CANNOT SIMPLY UPGRADE WITHIN VISTA??? FIRST TIME ISSUE EVER POSTED! I have a question that I cannot make sense of. I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 installed on my computer. I have a copy of a legit retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade SP1 DVD-ROM. I want to upgrade my current Vista Home Basic to Vista Ultimate. Sounds simple enough. I have read everywhere on the web and it can upgrade easily as long as you upgrade within Windows Vista and not a reboot installation. Okay, but when I get to a point in the Vista grade process, I CANNOT! During the installation process, when I get to the screen that states, "Which type of installation do you want?" AFTER INPUTTING THE VISTA ULTIMATE KEY CODE ON A PREVIOUS SCREEN, the option should be "Upgrade" ONLY and NOT "Custom (Advanced)" since the key code is set for upgrade option only. I GET THE TOTAL OPPOSITE!!! I only get the option "Custom (Advanced)" and the "Upgrade" option is grayed out. WHAT??? NO "Upgrade" option??? I SHOULD BE GETTING THE "Upgrade" OPTION!!! This does not make any sense!!! It states at the reason at the bottom of this screen, "Upgrade has been disabled. - The upgrade option cannot be started, to upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running." This does not make any sense, does it??? I should be able to only upgrade since I only have an upgrade disc. I am upgrading from a lower edition of Vista to a higher edition of Vista, therefore I should ALSO have this feature to upgrade enabled too when it knows my CD key is a higher ("upgrade") edition. I have spent several hours searching and read around the web and cannot find my same or similar case scenario. A first time! People who have upgraded between different editions of Vista with either the Windows Anytime Upgrade retail package or (mine) the Windows Vista Ultimate Retail Upgrade box (includes the Windows Anytime Upgrade anyways on it) say it is a breeze! What is going on with me??? I should not be having any problems what-so-ever!

Mar 23, 2008I've tried everything to get my games to run smoothly on Vista, and nothing seems to work very well. Its not so much as my computer sucks, cause when I downgraded to XP, just to try it out, my games were running perfectly smooth. And don't say, "Just stick with XP then!" cause I love Vista in its many other ways.
The only reason I can come up with as to why my games run much slower on Vista is because Vista is a DirectX10 supported OS, but has a DirectX9 "emulator". And since all my games, and video card are DX9 compatible, it runs in the emulated mode. Now we all know running emulators makes our computers run a bit slower, so thats the only solution I can come up with.
Well I know alot of others have had this problem, and Microsoft knows its a problem, so they have said, and I've been told that Vista SP1 would fix that. Well I downloaded SP1 RC Refresh, yet nothing seems to have changed at all...
So heres my questions - Do you guys feel that because its a DX10 supported OS, and im running DX9 software/hardware, that thats a reason why my games run slower? Also what do you guys think on Vista SP1 RC Refresh?

3 days before I had upgrade my PC's memory to 4G, then I find Vista 32 Bit version can not recognize all the memory.So I try to install an Vista 64 Bit version for the test to check if the 64 bit system is ok for me.
The problem is, Vista 32 was installed on to the 3rd partition of the harddisk,usually the drive letter will be E in Windows XP and previous version windows, although it in Vista it display as C drive. I tried to install the 64 Bit Vista in to the 4th partiton. After all the drivers and applications install completed,that seems so far so good. Then I find my previous F drive now names C. The Drive C in Vista 32 Bit names E now. When
I try to boot into Vista 32, the error message : winload.exe could not find.
I used bcdedit try to redirect the device and osdevice to E drive, Vista 32 still could not start normally, the system will hang up in the blue desktop background,seems can not load user profile or sth like that.
I have check the E drive, all the files of Vista 32 are still there.Anyone have any good idea about fix the Vista 32 bit boot and keep the Vista 64 bit also?

I know DOS command prompt by heart, and since I am no longer young it's something that new generation often is unclear about. I can achieve many tasks faster by issuing commands and don't need any help files, I've been doing it since late 80's. Now with Power Shell it's a new level. This is a great continuation of command-driven interface. Also when renaming files in WinExplorer Vista doesn't select .Extension by default - more convenient than WinXP where I was annoyed by constant extesnion retyping. But a few great features still don't offset the fact Vista was a fiasco.
Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive
Dec 25, 2008Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
