I thought SP1 was supposed to inprove Vista's known slowness I really hates the thought of having to reinstall/rebuild - any ideas why a legit SP1 install would bring Vista to a nearly unbearable slowness - file copying from physical drive to another physical drive, or over the local net..doesn't matter, just excruciatinging slow...slower than it used to be, which was plenty slow enough.

I have a big problem with my Windows Vista Ultimate installation: In my PC I have 2 Sata HD units in the first one (at the time I installed Vista) there was a Windows Xp working installation. Vista have been installed on the second unit but after several time I discovered that the actual boot have been installed on the first disk MBR (that with Windows Xp). Now I had to remove the first disk unit and obviously this will prevent Vista to start. How can I handle that? There's a way to 'rebuild' the Vista boot?
I did to accelerate the start up of Vista did not help at all. = Whether killing services, ditching the sidebar, cleaning up etc. etc. = the startup still takes up to two minutes. As opposed to it, the = shutdown takes only 10 secs. I really do not understand what is wrong = with the start up. As an example, today the usual security updates etc. = from MS installed which required a restart. From the moment the restart = started (shutdown finished in 10 secs) to full availability of the = desktop, it took more than 3 minutes. This is ridiculous. My laptop has = 4MB of RAM and a 2.0 GHz AMD CPU. I think that should be enough to make = it faster.........
I've just tried to uninstall Vista OSX 4 via its uninstaller, but nothing seems to have worked. All the icons are that of MacOS, same goes for the login and bootscreens. But nevermind the last two, I will deal with them myself. What bothers me is that I cannot find IconCache.db nowhere on C: in order to delete it and reset the icon cache as described here, on vistax64.com. The other method (switching back to 16-bit colors also did not do the trick). Mainly my concern is for the explorer icons - system drives, start menu icons (Computer, Control panel...)
I am using Vista Home perm, and now EVERYTIME my computer boots up it goes through the configuring updates screen and takes 20 mins to boot, as when I shut it down it states confirgruing updates. It just started doing it, how can I stop this, without a rebuild?
I am thinking of rebuilding the search index. I have noticed that the search function does not find files I know are there. I think I know how to do it, and I gather it will take a long time.
I have been reading the posts on this site for some time and I am impressed with the depth of knowledge displayed by some of the experts. I hope that you will be able to help me with my problem. I am using a Dell 1720 Inspiron laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. In use for more then one year with no problems until now. A problem has arisen with the Index and Search feature which has defied my attempts to correct. I describe the problem as follows: For example, I wish to locate a file titled 'catalog.xls'. I enter the Start menu and in the Search box at bottom of menu, I write 'c'. The return should be a selection of files grouped as 'PROGRAMS', 'FILES' and 'FAVORITES&HISTORY'. The avorites and the Programs are there but not the Files. I am certain that the 'catalog.xls' file does exist and it is in the hard drive but my searcher (index) system is failing to locate it or any other files. In my attempts at correcting this, I went to CP>Index Options. States that zero files have been indexed. I then tried to rebuild the index and/or to restore original defaults.
I had a computer shop rebuild my wifes computer. They built itunder the name RoB Davies.my name is RoD Davies. It . To "fix" this error, I added a User in Control Panel/User Accounts uner the name Lenore and gave her admin rights and Deleted the User in Control PanleUser Accounts of Rob Davies or I THOUGHT I HAD.I then had to MANUALLY ADD the User "Lenore" to C:Users
However, in C:Users there is STILL RoB Davies with all folders (music, saved searches etc) of about 1gb in size and a User Lenore, same folders(music et al) of about 40KB. I have done some checking and all the Registry Keys are under Rob Davies.
THINKING BACK, perhaps instead of ADDING a User in Control Panel underLenore, maybe I CHANGED the name of the Account from Rob Davies to Lenore. If I did, perhaps Vista H/Premium DOES NOT amend the C:User (name) , itleaves the C:User as RoB Davies...if you get my drift. Which is why I had to manually add a Lenore to C:Users?
Is that possible? And what would therefore happen if I:
1. MANUALLY Deleted the C:UserLenore that I manually added. 2. Went to Control PanelUser Accounts and Added another User, say LDavieswith admin rights (which WOULD have VISTA create the User in C:Users as C:UsersLDavies) 3. RENAME the account in Control PanelUser Accounts presently named Lenore BACK to RoB Davies and then 4. DELETE the User RoB Davies in Control PanelUser Accounts which thenmight Delete the User in C:UsersRob Davies
I have hp laptop with Vista Home Premium (OEM) installed. I've made Recovery Disks using the Recover Manager. I wish to have a clean install of Vista instead of using the Recovery Disks. I've read previous threads but I have to say I am only getting more confused.
- Can I perform clean install of my Vista OEM? - Can I use any copy of Vista OEM cd and use the Product Key sticked behind my laptop?.........
I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.
Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
I have Vista Ultimate upgrade. I'm currently running Win 2000. Obviously I can't install Vista 64 bit from this OS so I'm following the instructions here which says you can boot from CD to install Vista 64 however the previous operating system must not be removed prior to install. In my system Win 2k is on a different hard drive than the one I'm installing to. When I start the install process, on the screen where you select the custom option, it says that upgrade is disabled. I assume this means it did not detect my previous OS? I can install my Win 2k on the hard drive where I wish to install Vista. In the past however, when I had the previous OS on the C: drive and I installed Vista on the same drive Vista would end up on the next available drive letter (i.e. E. Nothing really wrong with this but it's kind of awkward and can't be changed later.
I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I install this program (Shipping Assistant) and it will not open (however the previous version worked fine). I get this error:

I have Vista Ultimate x64bit and trying to install SP2 Standalone onto my Dell latitude E6400 and is telling me to install SP1 first, but SP1 is installed. Did anyone have simular problem, or suggestion on how to solve this issue? besides installing OS with SP2 included. I googled the S_it out of it, but no go.
when i try to reinstall vista i get this error. i bought and installed a new hdd and want to install vista on it. when i try to boot (turning comp on with vista dvd in drive) with vista dvd i get no boot device found. also when i run f2 setup at boot i don't see my dvd or cdrom.
Can anyone tell me the best and easiest way to re-install Vista which was pre-installed on my PC when purchased. I'd like to re-install because of performance problems. I have the business edition.
I am experiencing a whole deal of difficulty running a clean install of vista ultimate x64.
Now upon install it seems to boot fine and get into the initial install setup of keyboard type (US etc...) and the selection of the OS, I select my HDD to install vista on and the installation goes away copying files and extracting files ... then upon the reboot to setup the rest of windows this is where it all goes terribly wrong, i have had several different errors and BSODs examples are below:
Now i have researched all the errors i have had show up and can define nothing in common with them all, I have removed the X-FI creative sound card, wireless kbd and mouse and gone back to basics, i have checked all my hardware and it IS compatible with x64 but still no luck.
i can get no replication of the error it just goes mental on the initial reboot after installing windows, and then reboots over and over, sometimes it gets further and gets back into windows but then i just get told the pc rebooted unexpectedly or the install was interupted to reboot and reinstall, i have tried to repair the half install but still no resolve (the even weirder thing was i tested vista ultimate x86 (32-bit) and all installs fine.
Vista Ultimate - Win SBS R2 Domain member Symantec Anti-virus Corporate edition ISA firewall client. I have 2 vista systems on my small home network. I tried the push update of SP1 and it failed and I tried the downloaded SP1 and it failed with the usual error codes. I wnet through KB947366 and actually got the long install but it failed in pass 3. My other system had no problems and is at SP2. Both vista systems have nearly the same applications and both are domain members.
I have been unable to install Vista's SP2. Otherwise, the system runs fine and all previous updates have been installed. Will the system be lacking something if I just continue with normal updates?
Im currently running XP and Ubuntu, however I will be installing Vista x64 in the next few days instead of XP. What I need to know is what drivers I will need to get before I install Vista? Should I get all the drivers now and put them on a cd for when Vista is installed or shall I just install them when Vista has installed? Im not sure what the best way to do it is?
Last night i tried to install vista, but after loading the disc in and rebooting, it went through the windows is copying files bar with the black background, then it went to the green vista loading bar, then it went to a blue/green background with a mouse cursor and said installing windows. I left it there for an hour, and it didnt change. I then rebooted into XP, and ran the installer from windows, where i selected which drive to install to, and then it copied and expanded the setup files. It then rebooted, and after the vista load bar it went to a black screen with a mouse cursor. i left it there for an hour and no change. Ive got new hardware in my computer, and after running the vista compatibility tool it said i'd have no issues running any version of vista. I was trying to install Home Premium btw.
So when I first bought my Gateway laptop it came with Vista premium, and sure it looked all nice and shinny, but once I tried to install my games and play them I got punched in the face by Microsoft. I got horrible frame rate with ALL my video games. Of course I researched if my games were compatible with Vista.
I know its Vista that makes my games run like crap cause just a month ago I installed XP on my top and got perfect frame rate with all my games. The only reason I went back to Vista is because I couldn't find all the proper drivers for my laptop with XP since its built and only supports Vista. It makes me cry a little inside cause my girlfriend has a Gateway laptop with worse system specs, yet she gets alot higher frame rate cause she uses XP, QQ.
So now comes to my topic; After all the research I did and tricks I tried to improve performance I heard, this was months ago btw, that there wa a service pack coming to Vista that would improve performance. So after hearing that and getting all hyped up I waited and waited... So now we come to today. I just installed SP1 and was kinda excited!
I had to install a new Motherboard. The CPU, Hard drive and all the other hardware are the same. Is there a way to get Vista working again without doing a totally new installation of Vista and all other programs?
