I am using Vista Home perm, and now EVERYTIME my computer boots up it goes through the configuring updates screen and takes 20 mins to boot, as when I shut it down it states confirgruing updates. It just started doing it, how can I stop this, without a rebuild?

I've just tried to uninstall Vista OSX 4 via its uninstaller, but nothing seems to have worked. All the icons are that of MacOS, same goes for the login and bootscreens. But nevermind the last two, I will deal with them myself. What bothers me is that I cannot find IconCache.db nowhere on C: in order to delete it and reset the icon cache as described here, on vistax64.com. The other method (switching back to 16-bit colors also did not do the trick). Mainly my concern is for the explorer icons - system drives, start menu icons (Computer, Control panel...)
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a big problem with my Windows Vista Ultimate installation: In my PC I have 2 Sata HD units in the first one (at the time I installed Vista) there was a Windows Xp working installation. Vista have been installed on the second unit but after several time I discovered that the actual boot have been installed on the first disk MBR (that with Windows Xp). Now I had to remove the first disk unit and obviously this will prevent Vista to start. How can I handle that? There's a way to 'rebuild' the Vista boot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI thought SP1 was supposed to inprove Vista's known slowness I really hates the thought of having to reinstall/rebuild - any ideas why a legit SP1 install would bring Vista to a nearly unbearable slowness - file copying from physical drive to another physical drive, or over the local net..doesn't matter, just excruciatinging slow...slower than it used to be, which was plenty slow enough.

I have been reading the posts on this site for some time and I am impressed with the depth of knowledge displayed by some of the experts. I hope that you will be able to help me with my problem. I am using a Dell 1720 Inspiron laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. In use for more then one year with no problems until now. A problem has arisen with the Index and Search feature which has defied my attempts to correct. I describe the problem as follows: For example, I wish to locate a file titled 'catalog.xls'. I enter the Start menu and in the Search box at bottom of menu, I write 'c'. The return should be a selection of files grouped as 'PROGRAMS', 'FILES' and 'FAVORITES&HISTORY'. The avorites and the Programs are there but not the Files. I am certain that the 'catalog.xls' file does exist and it is in the hard drive but my searcher (index) system is failing to locate it or any other files.In my attempts at correcting this, I went to CP>Index Options. States that zero files have been indexed. I then tried to rebuild the index and/or to restore original defaults.

Panel/User Accounts uner the name Lenore and gave her admin rights and Deleted the User in Control PanleUser Accounts of Rob Davies or I THOUGHT I HAD.I then had to MANUALLY ADD the User "Lenore" to C:Users
However, in C:Users there is STILL RoB Davies with all folders (music,saved searches etc) of about 1gb in size and a User Lenore, same folders(music et al) of about 40KB. I have done some checking and all the Registry Keys are under Rob Davies.
THINKING BACK, perhaps instead of ADDING a User in Control Panel underLenore, maybe I CHANGED the name of the Account from Rob Davies to Lenore.If I did, perhaps Vista H/Premium DOES NOT amend the C:User (name) , itleaves the C:User as RoB Davies...if you get my drift. Which is why I had to manually add a Lenore to C:Users?
Is that possible? And what would therefore happen if I:
1. MANUALLY Deleted the C:UserLenore that I manually added.
2. Went to Control PanelUser Accounts and Added another User, say LDavieswith admin rights (which WOULD have VISTA create the User in C:Users as
C:UsersLDavies)
3. RENAME the account in Control PanelUser Accounts presently named Lenore BACK to RoB Davies and then
4. DELETE the User RoB Davies in Control PanelUser Accounts which thenmight Delete the User in C:UsersRob Davies
Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

I feel like something is wrong with the update system. I reinstalled Vista and disabled automatic updates. However, after a while I started to get the same problem. Whenever I try to go to GMAIL the tab starts rapidly moving from "gmail"to "connecting" to "redirecting", and this moves very fast and continues until I manage to re start. How can I fix this ? I created a new user and I can Access GMAIL there but it's a pain to switch users just to access mail.info: vista 32 bit, google home page, gmail is default.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhy is is so that ever since I have been running Vista Ultimate my HDD led runs almost non stop. I have disabled Superfetch, Indexing and Defrag just to name a few in a vain attempt to track down why this happens. It appears to be normal with some but not all Vista installations. Before Vista came along this sort of activity would ring alarm bells. The System and Performance monitor shows it is updating system files but why does it need to do it 100% of the time. Hard drives are NOT built with a 100% duty cycle in mind. I need some knowledgable person who knows the complete answer to this problem.

In my bios i do not have the drives turned on to RAID i just have them in their naitive modes. I installed Vista and now it set up a RAID 1 all by itself. Has my C Drive as MIRROR[0][2] SCSI Disk Device. Now i want to stop this so i can use the other drive. Can i do this with out a reinstall? Or what would happen if i whipped on drive then plugged it back in , would this clear the other as well?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a new Dell with Windows Vista Business installed. I set it up to connect to the network printers and everything was fully operational. I was printing fine on 2/15/08. I came into work this morning 2/19/08 and when I try to print I get a message saying unable to print. I get the same message with 2 different canon printers and 1 hp laserjet printer. I tried removing the printer and reinstalling it and there was no change. I installed it locally and there was no change. I stopped and restarted the print spooler and there was no change. I cannot even print a test page.
