Slowness Of Windows: Killing Services, Ditching The Sidebar, Cleaning Up
Jul 29, 2009
I did to accelerate the start up of Vista did not help at all. = Whether killing services, ditching the sidebar, cleaning up etc. etc. = the startup still takes up to two minutes. As opposed to it, the = shutdown takes only 10 secs. I really do not understand what is wrong = with the start up. As an example, today the usual security updates etc. = from MS installed which required a restart. From the moment the restart = started (shutdown finished in 10 secs) to full availability of the = desktop, it took more than 3 minutes. This is ridiculous. My laptop has = 4MB of RAM and a 2.0 GHz AMD CPU. I think that should be enough to make =
it faster.........

I bought a new machine about a year ago with Vista pre-installed. It seemed OK at first but is just getting slower and slower every time that I use it. After you turn it on, CPU activity is at 100% and the hard disk light is constantly on. It appears to be caused by TrustedInstaller, but even when you kill this process of, it reappears. This is making my system unusable and it seems to be getting gradually worse. I saw another post about this process which claimed that deleting your problem history would sort the problem out, but it made no difference to me.

I thought SP1 was supposed to inprove Vista's known slowness I really hates the thought of having to reinstall/rebuild why a legit SP1 install would bring Vista to a nearly unbearable slowness - file copying from physical drive to another physical drive, or over the local net..doesn't matter, just excruciatinging slow...slower than it used to be, which was plenty slow enough.

Ive been running my Vista hiccup free for about a year when all of the sudden a bunch of errors started appearing. In order to get to my login screen after boot took 45 minutes for some reason and was a pain I dealt with. Now I have a bigger problem
-The control panel did not work and whenever vista loaded a ton of errors arose.
-This came from windows services not being able to start and this therefore did not allow windows to check if it was genuine.
-After a week, windows went into limited mode where I only have a blackscreen and access to the internet, nothing else. Microsoft support gave me no help and the problem cannot be fixed without re-installing Vista. No problem i thought.
-Popped in the original vista dvd and changed the bios to boot from CD. This is where the problem lies.
-When I do this, it does nothing with the dvd, I wait 45 minutes until my login screen appears and I am back into limited mode. I want to re-install vista but cannot boot from cd/ dvd.

I have just recently bought my laptop with Vista Home Premium on it. The problem occurred after I transferred all files over and tried to play my Corrinne Baley Ray audio cd. The page came up saying I needed to download a license and to press the button. After doing this I get a message saying that "my netscape browser does not have windows media services plugins installed. And thats as far as I can go.

One day i tried logging in using windows live messenger and got an error 81000306. I've tried disabling autotuning as prescribed by some websites but it has not worked. Tried resetting winsock, forwarding ports for the .net messenger, repaired Windows live messenger, and still no go. I ran the windows live messenger tests and they all passed, so it's weird that i cannot connect.
I've also noticed that when logging on to sites that use the windows Live ID, the pages will not load. Status indicated on the browser is that it says " Connected to logon.live.com " but dOes nothing else. no webpage is loaded and it does this until the connection times out. This happens when signing in to bungie.net or xbox.com as well. I also have my xbox 360 connected to the same modem (without a router, i just take the ethernet cord and plug it to whichever i wanna use), and it can connec to Windows messenger on the dashboard ok.
Have restarted and restarted, have power cycled the modem, even reseated my D-Link ethernet pci card. I have not made any large changes, other than i am using Open DNS, and it's updater since my ISP has dynamic IP, and i have turned off UAC. I've done every troubleshooting step i can think of (I worked for tech support for a computer manufacturer, so i've pretty much used up everything that training has given me and my 2 years experience in that field). All other messenger programs work. Tried using pidgin, with the same result, i can connect with all other IMs except windows live.

I have had this problem for a now while. As you see in the title an instance of svchost.exe always using about 70,000 K (right now another using 88,000 K) in task manager and I would like to know why and if I can bring that number down. If I right click it and click go to Services, the following are shown:........
Disabling Windows Update in Administrative Tools Services does nothing. I have 2 GB RAM also.

I've just installed Windows Vista (32bit) Ultimate on a second machine in my home network, and the content for on-line services is very different on them both. The regional settings for both of these machines are the same (Netherlands), but the content is very different. How can I add/change the on-line regional content for media center? I've already looked into adding .mcl files into the AppData directory, but this isn't the solution that I'm looking for.

2 weeks ago I've installed fresh new copy of Vista x64 ultimate sp1 and downloaded all critical updates. From time to time I got BSODs randomly + windows continues to spam me with message error message "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" - in event log it appeares as
"Faulting application svchost.exe_iphlpsvc, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47919291, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791adec, exception code 0xc0000374, fault offset 0x00000000000a6e97, process id 0xde8, application start time 0x01c965d5d7c709ab."
After getting this message my window appearance changes for aero to half-aero-half-classic style and language icon diappeares from taskbar (and hotkey alt+shift stoppes wirking too - can't swich from default language ). I've tried to chnage language bar settings from Control Panel (Floating/Docked/Hidden) does nothing. Only restart brings things to normal, but after unpredictable period of time it happens again.

My question is about D: drive. i know d: drive is a recovery image but taht's all i know. does it have OS as well, it's 8 gigs and can it be made to a bootable disk. My pc didn't come with any disks and it came from best buy what ass's you are gateway but i love the pc. The reason i ask is because i want to thoroughly clean my pc and hard drive with the destructive option. to give it that 100% no virus can possibly be on my pc result. i have tried that recovery with disk option before on other pc's and the virus managed to stay some how. My brother taught me that the best way to clean pc's are to,
1. take memory sticks and battery out of pc.
2. turn it on it gives like a flush to the memory stick.
3. put memory and battery back.
4. Turn on put OS (not recovery) disk in and and proceed to install
5. when at hard drive cleaning option choose destructive (yes i know it eliminates the D: drive partition) and proceed for a fresh OS.......

I am reading in this NG and all over the internet that cleaning the registry is a no, no. I am also informed that the registry can/does get all messed up/cluttered with all sorts of stuff, from removed programs, old pointers, etc, over time. So what/how do you fix this if you shouldn't use a registry cleaner???

I'm sure everyone knows that Windows Sidebar can potentially destroy the amount of RAM that is available on your PC, but I'm having sort of an unusual problem with this. When Windows Sidebar is loaded, the amount of RAM that it occupies is about 20MB, which is certainly acceptable for me. However, after the course of 6 or so hours the RAM increases upwards of 120MB, and after 12 hours, nearly 200MB! This just doesn't seem right. I'm assuming Sidebar is stored some previous information via RAM, but I really can't see this information being necessary at all. Is there anyway I can put a cap on the amount of RAM that Sidebar uses? Or even some other method to reduce the RAM usage?

So ever since I got my computer I can't get the sidebar to work. I can bring it up and add gadgets but they don't function properly and they only have an X on the right hand side (no magnifying glass to edit options). So basically, the sidebar works but the gadgets don't?? Some of the graphics will show up but they don't function...this is very frustrating and I've spent lots of time trouble shooting and trying to figure out possibilities

I've been getting that message for a while. When I try to look at the Sidebar properties, which I find using the Start/Search feature, nothing opens. When I go to the Sidebar folder in C:/Program Files/Windows Sidebar, there are 3 items there: a subfolder labeled Gadgets, a Configuration Settings icon labeled Settings, and a Sidebar application icon. If I click on the application icon, I just get the "Windows sidebar is not working" message. All of this happened after a System Restore a couple of months ago.

I have a custom built PC with an OEM vista home premium. After having it run vista for over a year, it has start to slow down alot. Cleaning out the registry, defraging and cleanign the hard drive does nothing so im assuming a fresh vista install will sort it all out. Thing is, will my product key still work as ive heard numerous stories of people being froced to purchase new keys due to vista not recognising their hardware. Furthermore, i have a 1 license version of office 2007 ultimate which was being given away at an extremely low price as a deal with microsoft. Will my office key still work. I have done clean installs on my old xp computer before no problem but now microsoft has introduced strict rules on product keys etc, im not sure
weather its worth the risk on my vista PC.
