Visible Profile Folders To A Server
			Mar 26, 2009
I want to redirect all my (visible) profile folders to a server. I have done this for all them except Desktop. I do this by right-clicking the folder's icon, clicking Properties, clicking on the Location tab, entering a location of \servershareusernameFolder, and clicking OK. It asks if I want to move everything in the current folder to the new folder, and I click Yes. Easy, and it works perfectly.
When I do this for the Desktop, it works just fine. But the next time I log in (whether after a reboot or not), the desktop folder has reverted back to C:UsersusernameDesktop. Nothing I do will make it stick to the server. The other redirected folders stay where I put them and they continue to work normally.

After a windows update I now have duplicated folders (not contents) in my profile folder. If I view c:/users/profile then the duplicates are not there. If I just click the Profile link then they are. - 2 Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favourites, Music, Pictures, Videos. Interestingly enough there is not a duplicate Links , Contacts or Saved Games, AppData or Searches.

The original content is still intact in the original folders but my profile is accessing the new ones so all of my program settings, browser profiles etc are inaccessible using the normal methods.
Also if I navigate to desktop then it shows links that don't show if I view my desktop.
A few weeks ago after an update Vista did a similar thing but started using a temporary profile even when I logged in fine so I couldn't access thigns, I created a new profile and copied stuff across. Now this! Arghhh, I hate windows, you never get this crap with *nix stuff.

Anyway, rant over, anyone any idea? I'm tearing my hair out and google hasn't helped. I'm not a tech noob but I don't have any real insight into how Vista does these things, I do web development not windows.

Does anyone know of a way to remove the virtual folder links that appear under your username in Explorer? I mean the folders like "Videos", "Searches" and "Links". I know some of these folders serve an important purpose(like "Links", "Favorites", "Contacts", "Desktop"), but I'd like to move them somewhere
else and not have them clutter up the tree view when I'm trying to navigate around my files in Explorer.
I can move them to another physical location (using the Location tab on the properties window), but when I go back to Explorer, links to them appear as sub-folders as though they were still in my userprofile directory. This really winds me up -- I think I should be allowed to organise my own file system, without Microsoft deciding what folders I need!

I received the 'user profile cannot be loaded' message and completed option one at the below link. I now am able to log into my user account which is great, but all my document folders and files are missing. Is there a way I can restore these.

Our Server upgraded from SBS 2003 to Win Server 08 & Exchange 07 last year. This email server is domain controller and we have one more file server which is windows server 03 joins in the domain. After upgraded the server, all of the User PC & email server cannot access or see share folders of another PC & email server each other except the email server can be able to access some windows vista PC. But all of the PC & servers (include email & filer server) can access file server share folders. Could you tell me which setting in server is wrong that cause this problem?

My set-up is very simple yet I cannot connect to a device. I have a Router which has three connections via ethernet.
1. Vista Machine
2. XP Machine
3. Music Server (systemline)
The problem I have is that my Vista machine will not connect to the music server - I cannot see the shared folders. My XP machine connects to it no problem, e.g. if I enter the location (

Whenever I view a folder (stored on a CD) with photo files using windows explorer it does not show the small pictures. Instead the standard windows icon/picture is shown. The pictures are visible for a short moment and then replaced by the default windows icon picture. This problem does not occur when I via a folder with photo files located on the harddisk. I use Windows Vista home premium (dutch version)

I am new to Vista but not Computers. In C:Program FilesCourse Designer 3, I created a new sub-folder '2008'. In Windows Explorer, this folder is not visible. In Windows Mail, it is. In the actual Course Designer software, it is. Why can't I see it in Windows Explorer?

I have tried quite a few forums searching for an answer to this and finally decided to join one and throw my question out there. Been having this problem with my recycle bin. When I delete a file, and send it to the recycle bin, it goes there, but is not visible. I have no idea what files are in there, I just know they are in there. I can hit restore, but I do not know what they were, or any info on them, so I do not know where they may go if restored. (unless the bin was empty and I only put one in there) The icon on the desktop shows that the bin now is full, I click on the icon, and there is nothing to see. no files, folder, anything. The "empty Recycle bin" button lights up, thus giving me the option of clearing files, and says "are you sure you want to permanently delete these files" I hit yes, and the icon on the desktop clears, as well as the "empty recycle bin" light dims, and as far as I can tell the bin is empty I have tried a couple different suggestions to do with corrupt recycle bin files. As Administrator I used this: rd /s /q C:$Recycle.bin to each drive and then followed by a re-boot.
THIS PROBLEM IS NOT the one where your desktop icon says full when it has been emptied or vice versa. The desktop icon functionality works, and when I "empty the bin", it tells me how many files I am deleting, I just have no idea what they are. This is a hard one as I can find a thread anywhere to this particular problem.IT IS NOT the desktop icon problem of it saying "opposite" of what it is, or how to get the desktopicon back if accidentally deleted. And it IS NOT the "recycle bin properties" option of having your deletes "immediately removed" that option is NOT selected on ANY of my drives. I am super-stumped on this. capitalized words here and there just emphasized so as to clarify facts I have already established and save people wasting breath on things I have eliminated as causes.

I have just purchased an Acer Aspire 8935g laptop, which comes with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit (not sure why 64bit isn't supplied). It has two 500gb hard drives; Disk 0 and Disk 1. Disk 1 is empty and I have successfully created 3 partions on this drive. According to Vista's Disk Management tool, Disk 0 contains three partitions. The first and last are both EISA Configuration partitions and can't be seen through Windows Explorer. The 2nd (middle) partition is the C: partition on which Vista is installed.

I want to install Windows 7 RC 64bit in a dual boot configuration, so I used Disk Manager to shrink the C: partition and then create a new 100gb partition. I assigned it the drive letter B: (there are no floppy drives on the laptop). The new B: partition is visible, along with the original C: partition through Windows Explorer, until I reboot the laptop. The B: partition then disappears and Windows Explorer can no longer see it, however Disk Management shows it is still there but it no longer has a drive letter and is now an EISA Configuration partition. I thought this issue might be caused by the choice of drive letter so I tried again using a different letter (F: ). Each time the drive is only visible to Windows Explorer until the laptop is rebooted. I've also tried using a different partition management tool (Partition Wizard) but it makes no difference. I've tried creating the partition as logical and primary but to no avail. explain Why can't I create a visible partition on my "O/S" drive?

If I add USB drive as Readyboost in vista pc with 2gb ram, will it show any visible difference in performance?? Also, Given to the fact that 32 bit vista cant use more than 3gb of ram, if I add 2gb of usb readyboost drive to a laptop/pc which already has 3gb of ram, will it work as if system had 5gb of ram?? If not, will it show any visible performance difference in general tasks, or gaming even though the system already has 3gb of ram to begin with??

I have 2 Vista machines and 1 XP media center machine which were all visible to each other and between which files could be shared. Today I installed the MS updates for the Vista machines and could not see other computers on one of the Vista machines (Desktop Vista machine), nor could the other two machines see the Desktop Vista machine. I system restored back to a day previous and the same situation prevails. Strangely, the other Vista machine (Laptop Vista) can see the XP machine, and the LT Vista was updated and remains so.All machines are discoverable and all have shared folders.

I recently purchased a HP M9200t with Vista Premium 64 bit. I would like to make the hidden recovery partition, visible. I want to keep it, but I also want to create a folder for updates. How do I make this partition visible? I remember a registry entry mod, but I can't find it. And, it should be for 64 bit Vista.

The login screen for my computer is missing all text and controls except the speech assistance button in the bottom left corner. If you click this the password filed does display and you can login. After login all text is missing from icons etc. Start menu will not display nor will right click menu. If applications are lanced they show in the task bar but never become visible. That said full screen applications such as games will launch from the desktop and work fine. I have scanned the hard drive for viruses with AVG from a Ubuntu instance on the computer which found no viruses.

It looks like after I was messing with the registry of my Acer Aspire 5720 I can't boot up properly .
After booting up I see the Windows Vista home premium text with Vista's
blue/green background and only two buttons. On the left is Ease of
Access and on the right is Shut Down/Restart/Sleep button.
I don't see the task bar, can't call the task manager with ctr-alt-del
no Start button, no desktop icons.
The safe mode starts fine (I'm writing this while in safe mode with networking).
I've tried repair windows option with no luck.
Startup recovery says: Could not detect a problem
System restore says: No restore points have been created
Complete PC restore: No valid backup locations could be found
When I start command prompt it starts ok with x:windowssystem32 if not little strange since I don't have an X drive . I've tried unsuccesfully to start windows explorer by going to c: and typingexplorer.exe.
This all started after I uninstalled Logmein software, or rather after I deleted all the remains of logmein in registry after I uninstalled the software.

I just installed a new internal hard drive (SATA). I want to use this drive only for storage (not boot-up).
When I try to access it via "My Computer" the drive is not shown. When I try to find it in "Device Manager" it is not shown. When I try to set it up in the BIOS, that field is "read only"... I cannot highlight it to change it. I have made sure all cables are secure. I even swapped the power source of my existing hard drive with the new hard drive to ensure power is OK. How do I set up this hard drive? My PC is a Dell Inspiron 531S, running Windows Vista Home Edition 32bit.

I have enabled file sharing on my home network so that my wife's XP machine can access photos and music stored on my Vista Home Premium box. Also share printers. I have set up non-password protected sharing, and it works fine overall - I can see everything she shares, and vice versa, printers work, etc. The only problem we're having is the photos. Whenever I add new photos they don't show up until I re-share the folder. If I put new photos in a sub-folder, the sub-folder is visible and can be opened without errors, but it appears empty until I re-share the entire photo folder. I cannot find any information about this problem, but it just occurred to me that I gave the guest account read-only access to the photo folder instead of full permissions. I guess that's one thing to try when I get home, but I would like to keep it read-only so that nothing happens to the pictures accidentally.

Awhile back I was given instructions on how to change the folder standard green folders to new pink folders. Well, my computer crashed out and I had to get a new hard drive. I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.

This computer is new to me and so is vista - I have had no problem with email because I have always gone to my own ISP via explorer. Today, however, I wanted to reply to a craigslist seller and found that my computer was trying to send the email with windows mail (and not sending!)- it was asking me questions like who my outgoing server and incoming server is - can anyone tell me what I need to do? Do I have to use windows mail or can my computer be set to default to yahoo email like my old one was?

Computers can do virtually anything but, why can't i do this simple task. In Vista home folder views we have columns for name, type, date modidied, date created and so on. We can choose which ones we want to be visible. I use the "date created" catagory quite often and I would like it to be always be visible in all my folders at all times.
But I can't do it. Iv'e tried the procedure of configing the documents folder just like I want it. Then I go to folder options and click "apply to all folders" then I uncheck "remember each folders view settings". Then I check "remember each folders view setting". doing any of this doesnt help. I still look at the folders later and the "date created" column is missing again.

so I want to get a good mid to high range card. I have a slim/low profile case.
Is it possible for me to move my mATX mobo to a regular midtower atx case? This is the case I want: Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Storm Sniper SGC-6000-KKN1-GP Black ABS Bezel, SECC Body ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases and if I wanted to put a good psu in would it be fine? like a 600 watt. Would that be too much for my mobo? or could i put more case fans in? thanks. and if you dont mind, please dont suggest building a whole new computer. before i actually do that im gonna stick with this one until i get my new parts.

I have recently been having many with my computer. Firstly, i was having problems with the SID where it says user profile cannot be loaded. After many hours i managed to fix this problem but i've recently got a new problem.

I Installed a new wireless network card into a pci slot and started the computer and it worked. As i hadn't had my computer working for a while i decided to update the video card driver and decided to check for updates for windows. I installed both the video card driver and windows updates and rebooted. But when the computer tried to start up all the fans started and the power light goes on but nothing happens.

I don't know whether the problem is with the new hardware, the driver update or the windows updates. The computer won't start at all and i have some important work on it.

Ive been having problems with my laptop just recently, it was sudden! I had no problem whatsoever with it before, its an acer aspire 5630, ive never had major problems with it and its almost two years old! This is my first major problem, When i try to logon it says 'Profile cannot be loaded' Ive read everything possible on the internet from my desktop to try and find out what to do, most mentioned safe mode, this is another problem, my safe mode Does not work!
I can get into safe mode but as soon as i do it comes up with a black screen that says safe mode in every corner! Ive tried repairing my computer from one of the options listed with safe mode and it tells me it cant repair itself! this happened two days ago and i still have no idea on what to do, i use my laptop for school, it is very important that i get it fixed, im not sure if its something wrong with my laptop or windows, I have windows vista home premium.
