Sep 7, 2009
i rebooted my comp and when i try to install sp 2 i get this message. Installation was not successful. An Illegal character was encountered. For a multi-byte character set this includes a lead byte without a succeeding trial byte. For the Unicode character set this included the characters
0xFFFF and 0xFFFE
Error: ERROR_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER (0X80070246)
I want to intall sp2 because I have added 4gb ram and my computer keeps crashing and i heard sp2 had a fix for this.
I have tried installing Windows Vista SP1 roughly 8-10 times now, with no luck any time. It always gets to 98% complete on the first stage, then sits there for awhile before reverting, rebooting, and trying again. First time I got error code 0x800F0826, and Microsoft directs me here: Error message when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1: "Installation was not successful" or "An internal error occurred while installing the service pack". None of the resolutions work. Then I got this message a few times 0x800705B4. Which I have read is a "Timed out" error. Its always at 98% on stage 1 of 3 that it hangs up before it fails and reverts................
Running Vista Home Premium with an NVidia 8800 GTX video card. Have SP1 installed but do not have Acceleration. Trying to install SP2 but it won't install. I first tried clicking "Run", and then also tried downloading the patch to the desktop and then running, but it simply will not install...just cancels itself. I disabled McAfee VS before trying to install, but results still the same. Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas how to get this to work? I looked on this board and MS site, and so far have found no other mentions of this problem.
Microsoft has made a great impression on an Apple Mac user. So much so that I will be installing Vista on his Mac this afternoon. I am so excited by this that I can barely contain myself. Convert them one Vista installation at a time!
I'm trying to install a very old version of 3d Studio Max (v3), but I get the error: "Problem with HWL driver installation. Rerun the Sentinel Driver setup separately for your platform."

I'm going to reinstall Vista 64-bit Home Premium. Should I install both the service packs first, -and then- the security updates and miscellaneous thingies? Or should I install all the security and miscellaneous thingies first, -and then- SP1 and then SP2 after that?
When we try to install from the AE3 Icon, it stops 30 seconds into installation process. saying that the game is not installed and that it will now exit.
My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.
I'm wondering if there is a simple way to take your Vista Installation Disc and use it to create a custom installation disc that also includes updated drivers and updated hotfixes. The goal would be that during a clean install, those updated drivers and Windows Updates are installed automatically.
For a specific example, I use a USB Wireless Adapter. If I could create a custom windows disc that includes those drivers, then I my USB Wireless Adapter would be recognized and I could therefore allow Windows to connect to the Internet during Setup to see if there are any hotfixes and updates.
I have installed Vista x32 with SP2 Ultimate. When I installed anti-virus, BSOD came. Same AV version haven't problem with Vista SP1, what is updated to SP2. Then I try to install Vista with SP2 to hyper-v server, but installation stops immediately error screen (STOP: 0x0..8E). Is n_windows_vista_ultimate_sp2_checked_build_x86_dvd_342432.iso packet ok ?
I have run Vista Ultimate for about 15 months now and it is fully up to date with SP1 but recently and repeatedly I am now getting activation problems. It is a cycle which repeats about every 7-10 days.As I logon and just before the desktop appears I get a black screen with a panel saying that "activation was successful". The next time I logon there is a notice in the bottom of the desktop screen saying my copy of Windows is not genuine. So I go to the WGA webpage and do a validation which always runs fine -- I have the ActiveX control installed. The next time I logon everything is fine but in 7-10 days time I have to go through the same cycle again.
In system properties my operating system is listed as Vista Home Basic - Service Pack 2. However whilst looking into some general performance problems I checked the Windows Update History. I see that Vista Service pack 2 (KB 948465) failed on three occassions producing error codes 800706BE, 80004004, and 80010108 and there is no "successful" subsequent update. I have not manually updated to service pack 2. How can I tell if Service Pack 2 is actually installed or installed correctly? Is it sensible to download service pack 2 manually and try to install it when most of my performance problems are now solved?
I'm having some trouble doing a clean install of vista on my machine. I had already installed it once back in January of 2008, and was going to do a clean install here last night. I formatted my hard drive, and start the installation it will go through all of its steps until it states that it needs to restart. It restarts then goes to the part where it says it is "completing installation" and then it just hangs. Things I've tired:.........
after installing vista the setup completes and a reboot is necessary so when windows is "starting for the first time" i sit there for about 5min then it loads winbeta again with an error message "setup is unable to start the installation" after it auto reboots winbeta now loads each time with an error that the computer was rebooted or that setup encountered an error and you must start over.
im running a dell 531 amd 64x processor 2gig stick of ram (removed 6gigs for the install) and a gt9800 graphics card no other sound cards or devices connected to the computer. i have tried to install 8 times now its getting very old!
I am trying to clean install Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. If you read my other post, I got around the blue screen about page in non paged area. I got the bad ram stick out and got a new one for my computer. (Toshiba Satillite). And I install it and it goes good until completing installation then it hangs.
I am about to install Vista64 home premium on a new build with 8 megs of RAM. The disk is Vista64 SP1. I was wondering if it is still recommended to install Vista64 with only 1 stick of RAM first prior to installing all 8 megs? Or because the disk has SP1, is this no longer an issue?
I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.
I am helping a friend install windows updates on her Sony VAIO laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1 installed. Laptop had not been updated since January 2009. All updates completed fine with the exception of KB973565. When installed via automatic windows updates I get the following error...........
I'm assuming a clean install with an upgrade license will be identical to a clean install with a 'full' copy, except that at some point during the process, it will ask for my key for Windows XP? I just want to confirm this is the case before I go buy an upgrade copy. one last question to tack on here - if I have a desktop and a laptop computer will it let me install the same copy and license key of Vista on both? I know some MS products in the past have allowed you to install on more than one computer because they realize a lot of people have more than one computer but they only work with one at a given time.
I've tried numerous times to Install Vista Sp1, but without success. The install appers to go well, reaching 100% at stage 3, but then the screen reports the SP did not successfully install, and proceeds to roll back. On Checking the message in Windows Update, the install failed with error 80004005. I've raised the issue directly with MS, but the advice to install the SP in Safe mode has not helped. I've also trawled various forums and cannot find any reference to the specific error code.
I own a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ1. A number of forums seem to suggest it might be a hardware issue, and I have tried disabling / uninstalling various devices to see if this helps, but this also has not got me any further. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what this error code means? Is there a way to force the SP to install despite this error code (it does get to 100% at stage 3 after all, so maybe it does install, but one of the packages check routines is picking up an error which doesn't really exist???)
I have Ultimate 32 bit that can't be upgraded to 64 bit because it is OEM. Can I leave it installed on one partition and then install Vista Business 64 bit on another partition, running both versions on the same PC? I already have the 64 bit Business which is why I'm asking.
I have a PC which came with Vista Home Premium 32 and I have an upgrade set with both 32 and 64 Ultimate. If I do a clean install of the 64 will I have a problem with activation, I have already activated the 32 install but would format first.
I am currently using Window Vista 32 Home Premium. However,I discovered that certain of my hardware do not have it installer or certain of my program cannot run in Vista,as such,I decided to use back my Winow XP pro.But after insert my Win XP PRO disc and restart my computer,it prompt me something like your "computer is facing some problem which may damaged your computer and need to be shut down". how to reinstalled my WIN XP PRO while my current OS is WIN VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32bit.
When I try to install the full Vista SP1 package, I get an error message that the installation failed because "the server returned a referral." I'm a home user not connected to a server so I don't know what this means.
My PC came with Vista Home Premium 32bit. Since SP1 was released, I've tried several times to install it both through Windows Update and manually but it always fails.I looked at the information in the nowledgebase article about the error message I was getting and it suggested running a system scan utility through the command line interface which I did. The utility said that it fixed some files but I had corrupted files that it was not able to repair.I went out and bought an upgrade version of Vista Home Premium that contained SP1 thinking I could just upgrade it as a workaround. No dice, the upgrade option is disabled unless you already have SP1 installed. It will only let me do a clean install. This brings me to my first question. If I do the clean install, it's going to format my HD right? I'll have to reinstall all my software? My second question is, does anybody know how I can get SP1 to install on my current installation? Any way to find and repair those supposedly corrupt files?
