I purchased an HP Pavilions laptop, with Vista Home Premium SP1, 3-4 months ago. There were about 35-40 security patches waiting for download and installation. I haven't gotten around to installing all of them yet. Does SP2 include all of those patches?

It started the installation process but an error message" C:windowssystem32 iched32.dll not designed to run on windows or contains errors" came up and I could proceed no further. I installed the same cd on my xp pc with no issues. Is there a fix for this or is there an error on vista.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows just stops during virus scan (Trend Micro)- eventually have to crash it Sometimes during logon, Windows just wanders away....either have to crash it or eventually it will reboot. Cannot boot in safe mode. It will get so far in loading dll files and then reboots it self after a period of inactivity. Cannot download latest Windows security updates.
The symptoms sound like the conflicker worm so I've tried the Sysclean tool recommended by Trend Micro with the latest pattern file. The system stops at some point just as it does with the virus scan and I have to crash it. If I log on to the latop and just surf or play games, no problem. I've also run sfc /scannow which reports no problems.
The Vista website says SP1 will be available Mid-April instead of Mid-March! Is this some kind of game they are playing??? Are we supposed to wait another damn month?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried going to 64bit a little over a week ago, and it was unstable, crashing and all kinds of things. So I went back to 32bit on Sunday evening. The problem I'm having is that half the time my websites will load. Like when I click on Firefox, it's waiting on a reply in the bottom left corner and doesn't do anything. Nothing happens at all. Same with IE7. What I don't get is why, when I rebooted my computer just now, it popped right up no problem, but most of the time it stops in mid process like it forgot where it was going. I know my system is caching and all that again, but the net is still not working correctly. I've released and renewed ip, I've uninstalled and reinstalled and all kinds of things, but it's still doing it more often than not.

It says underneath: "Do you want to save this file or find a program online to open it?" The name of the file is stated, and is said to be of the type "Unknown Filetype".
Below that there are buttons offering "Find", "Save" and not surprisingly "Cancel". If you click on "Find" a Window opens headed "Windows File Association" This says the file is "MIME Type: Application/x-gzip-compressed." None of this is normal, so I used System Restore to go back three days. This seems to have cured most of the errant links, but not all. The problem remains. When you click on a link, you should go to that link, right?

How do you open game patches. I click on the downloaded patch and it wont open. You have to pick a program. Any ideas?

I have Vista Ultimate 64, sometimes when I am downloading a large file download does not finish and I get an error box that the download had timed out. How can I stop this, the sites where is happens do no support resuming and I only have a slow connection.

That the second one would catch things that the first one might miss. So I'm gathering that this isn't true? I did look on the Kaspersky web page last night as I saw it listed on another firewall question and thought it looked pretty good. So which is better? Kaspersky Internet Suite, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, or this AVG one. I do want to purchase the whole program as the free trials only last for 30 days.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe version of Vista I use, running IE7, cannot download .exes. My XP computers, running IEs 7 and 8, and once 6, have never been so irritating. (i'd say my faith in vista is dwindling, but it was never there to begin with.) I've tries to download many a .exe. This time, for reference, it's Ventrilo. Certainly not a shady program - trusted by supposed millions. When prompted, if I click Run, the file appears to download, but when it has finished, the dialog box disappears and nothing else appears.Ever.

There is no error message. There is no message of any sort. Repeated attempts to download do nothing. Renaming the download to .ok, or some other name (in anticipation of renaming it to .exe once downloaded), as suggested in a previous thread, does not work. I have tried temporarily turning off certain securities, to no avail.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium. Windows Updates wants me install Service Pack 1.
1) I am up-to-date with Windows Updates, so do I really need the Service Pack?
2) Also, isn't it just going to take up unnecessary hard drive space since most of the fixes in SP1 were already downloaded by Windows Updates?
3) Does SP1 automatically not install whatever is already on the computer?
I have Ultimate 32 bit that can't be upgraded to 64 bit because it is OEM. Can I leave it installed on one partition and then install Vista Business 64 bit on another partition, running both versions on the same PC? I already have the 64 bit Business which is why I'm asking.
