I reformatted the computer back to xp for now. Is there a way to shut off all the permissions to continue in vista. If there is I`ll put it back on. but I do alot of work on the computer and it got annoying have to give it permission constantly. I know vista is about security but it has gone alittle to far. Also I got tired of having to try and get a program working . Run as admin wouldn`t work or it was too hard to get permission set up as admin. I`m the only one that runs this computer and noone else touches. So if there was a way to change it.
I recently added a NIC card to my comp because the one on my motherboard wouldn't work preoperly. Everything was fine for a few days but then my graphics card began to play up. The top of the display was fine, but the bottom three quarters was a cross between grey and odd colours. I took the NIC card out thinking I had overloaded the graphics card, turned it on and all was fine. Then after 5 minutes it began to play up again, but only when I was burning a DVD. I think it's the PSU as it's 2 and a half years old, I don't think it's pumping out enough juice for everything. The problem is gradually getting worst.
many things to learn! been using my pc for a while now and finally decided to set it up correctly as I learned about the need to have separate admin account with individual users. so now it is done and i'm learning i should have made a cd for password retrieval if password for admin account doesn't work.
Well, my password doesn't work for my admin account and i didn't make a password retreival cd. So it seems i have to reload vista? my desktop pc is an HP and like most new pc don't come have disks. if i decide to reload vista, will i lose all my personal data, pics, mp3, docs unless i copy them all to dvd? or will vista reinstall itself without losing personal data. i seem to remember that on older ms-os's you could reload the os and not lose you personal data?
I have the following problem: My Control Panel keeps using the Classic View instead of the Control Panel Home view. I checked the tutorial about this subject: I tried the second way (Through the Registry: Through a Download), as i have Vista Home Premium, but when I right-click the Restore_Default_CP_View, it doesn't show Merge (actually, I'm not sure, because I don't have an enlish version...). The other way (The Manual Way) doesn't work either, because I don't have the file HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. When I click Policies, it only shows one more folder, called system. The Explorer file doesn't seem to be there. I tried running as administrator, but that didn't work either.
After reading: how to enable windows mail tutorial. Windows mail still will not start? I have enabled the "hidden" admin account and windows mail works fine - configured got email, logged off, logged on still working. BUT in my normal account but still an admin account, no other accounts on system. Windows mail will not start :mad: have downloaded the reg file and that has done its job. Logged of, still nothing, switched off - still won't work.
wont allow me to access my "Msn" and my burning tools" they both say u need admin permissions and local admin or something like that, as far as i know, i am logged in as admin, that is also the only user account avilable on start up, and i did just format my pc.
i bought a eVGA 9800gtx and it wouldn't overclock.I thought it was my power supply and bought a new one old PSU=420W and 900GTX requires 450 so I bought a 460 and still I cannot overclock. I use rivatuner and set my clocks and click OK then it reverts back to stock. And same with eVGA precision.
tried to install a game on dvd on my new computer and pioneer dvr-118lbk wouldn't read it. installed vista home premium 64, mb driver, controller driver, and some other drivers. tried to play a dvd on computer and it wouldn't read it either. device manager tells me it is up to date, but says it is a cd-rom drive. what should i try?
I have a program that installs as a subfolder of the Program Files (x86) folder. Inside the main folder of the application is a file, SpecDat.xxx. The application, when run, needs to change this file. If I run this application from an administrator account, it comes back with a Error '53': File Not Found error. After some extended debugging by both me and the author, we discovered it wasn't updating this file.
When I tried to update this file manually using Notepad, Notepad wouldn't save it either. After more research, I ran the application by right-clicking and selecting "run as an administrator". Now it works, even though I'm always running it from an administrator account.
The Vista machine wouldn't boot up. So I got an adapter that allows you to attach the Vista hardrive to the XP machine as a USB device. I want to do this to tyr to save the files on the Vista drive. So I have it attached right now. The XP machine recognized a USB mass storage device on startup. But I can't find the drive or files anywhere.. I read somewhere to check disk manager but didn't see it there either. I did see it in "computer managment" under disk drives.. but couldn't seem to access it.
-I had an Ipod shuffle attached to the XP computer. I read somewhere this might cause a problem. But I don't know how to dfix it if that is the case.
-will the XP machine read the files from the Vista hardrive?
- do I have to put jumpers on the Vista drive I attached to make it a slave?
I downloaded a film ( a backup o one of my DVD's it has got scratched and I really wanted to see it as well. Anyway when I did I opened up the video file into windows media player, it asked me to get some rights/ acquisitions to play the file. As the message was coming from windows media player I guess hmm it must be true. Usually I wouldn't if anything asked me to download anything. As it finished windows media message came up with a message to say it was downloaded correctly. So I checked task manager making sure it was actually windows media player and it was. When I tried playing the file it wouldn't play.
Whatever it downloaded hadn't taken effect yet. Then I blue screened. My laptop wouldn't boot up normally. So I tried booting up with " last good configuration" it booted up but I found out what had happened. All my programmes were "corrupted" something to do with the registry according to the 60 pop up messages saying each and every programme had been corrupted.........
Wow...I have not been very happy the past couple of days...here's what happened: Yesterday afternoon, I turned on my computer, and it wouldn't start. Turns out it was a crcdisk.sys problem. To fix it, I went out and got a new HD (needed a new one, it was on sale, didn't want to lose the data on my old boot), installed Vista and SP1 clean, and now it works like a charm.
Today, I go to put my fourth gig of RAM in, and I tried to install the KB929777 update, but I got the "your system does not need this" error. So I tried to just put the 4th gig in, and low and behold, it froze at start-up. (Interestingly enough, I didn't get a BSOD, but I got a crcdisk.sys error...whether or not this was the initial problem, I'd rather not wonder). Took out the 4th gig again, and it starts up fine; slick, fast, and smooth. I would really like to be able to use all of my RAM, seems as how I did pay for it and all...I've got Mushkin XP2-6400 sticks that have been really reliable so far.
I got a Lenovo 3000 PC from friend who was tossing it ( wouldn't boot). Had no CDs for me, but I took it. I can mount drive in another system and the disk itself looks ok - but Vista is toast. I had already ordered win7 UPGRADE for another PC but now thinking - this will be my new box.So, I called Lenovo - ordered the original Vista home premium CD/DVD set and it will be here in a few days. I asked if it needs an oem partition to do a reinstall and was told 'no - these DVD's can be used in a brand new drive and will install fine.' I'd like to get the most from Win7 and it seems like to do that I need to upgrade from Vista and not XP. If I can I'd like to multiboot with XP too, so , could someone familiar with Lenovo as well as Vista/Win7 structure critique this plan:Partition drive - 4 partitions ? ( 1=XP, 2=Win7, 3=DATA and 4= Lenovo diag/utility partition)I install XP , then Lenovo Vista, then upgrade Vista to Win7Or will installing Lenovo disks wipe XP and leave disk with 2 partitions - one for me and one for diags ?
If I can have XP and Win7, any difference if I install all updates to Vista prior to win7 upgrade or will win7 end up the same either way if I wait until vista is installed , then go right to win7 then " windowsupdate" ?
HP TX1000 Laptop wouldn't auto connect to my wireless router (1 metre away). I remembered that on the bootup Wireless Assistant turned on Bluetooth but not Wireless. In the Network and Sharing Centre, "Manage Wireless Networks" isn't showing so I can't turn it on. In what may be a related issue, I can't get into Services - Vista says that either I don't have permission (I'm logged on as Administrator) or it can't find Windows/System32/Services.msc (which I can't see). I've done the obligiatory re-start and I've connected via cat5 but I need to resolve this
after I followed Robert's instructions to fix sending photos that wouldn't open...see thread below...I went back into WM and my inbox window is transparent and not functioning.
I just bought a new desktop yesterday and has just transferred most of my music and photos from my existing laptop to my new desktop. however i realized that most of my chinese songs wouldn't display correctly once transferred to vista (from xp system). how to fix the problem (instead of renaming each song manually) for your reference: (some displays correctly some doesn't, why?)
I recently tried to burn a CD for the first time in a number of months. I'd always used Roxio software for burning with no real probs but this time I could not get the drive to recognize the CD-R disk. Decided to delete the Roxio software and use the built in Windows Vista burning program instead but kept getting same message asking me to insert a disk. Checked the DVD RW drive properties and found it was set up ok as a recordable drive. Decided that the drive must be kaput so I bought a new one. Installed that ok but still Windows wouldn't recognize any recordable disks of any form that I put in the drive. Installeed the Nero 8 software that came with the drive and still have the same problem using that!
I installed vista on my mum and dads pc last night and all was going perfect until about an hour ago when I fitted the wireless network card to get on the internet and it wouldnt install fully and I get a message saying that I need a driver for the IEEE1394 controller ?? I cant get on the internet on that pc to check for drivers so im using my laptop but cant find any drivers,Ive also installed driver robot and that came up with a few drivers so i stuck them on a usb stick and installed but no luck.Ive gone into the device manager and under "other devices" the IEEE1394 controller is showing as a little question mark so ive gone into that and its saying no drivers are installed. I think its been like this from the second i installed vista but ive just noticed it when i tried to instal the wireless network card.Any ideas of how to fix this please ? and is it solveable ? I can not find any drivers for my mobo at all. the mobo is the asus p4p800 se
my problem being stuck at the blue/green screen while making a new fresh install.) Well I first signed up because I have was having install problems. When it got to the blue/green screen it wouldnt do anything. But what do u know.. right when I was typing this it starts to load and Im now on my way installing windows vista 64 bit! (cause I just recently bought 8gb of memory) Well... I guess I would explain my story since Im a newbie... and something for you guys to read.. Well my computer really needed a new HDD because for some reason my old one would always get curupted after like so many months... about 2-3 months? I was wow **** this. I wasnt sure why it was doing this. But my computer was only on a surge so I think maybe a couple power outages ****ed it up. (I already fixed that problem though, just bought a battery from newegg.com, when I bought more things, like my new hdd, memory, mouse and mouse pad.)
so finally my memory and windows vista x64 bit dvd came into the mail. As soon as I got em... I installed the memory then I wanted to upgrade my version of windows xp 32bit (I must say a really good OS at the moment, till when windows 7 comes out) So I tried just throwing in the cd and found out I couldnt upgrade that way. Because I got an error that said "somethin, cant remember the full message but bascially because I couldnt run 64bit dvd when I have 32bit" so no biggie right? Then I was like ok well I can just install it by booting up. I got passed the part that said "Now loading windows vista files" alright not bad... so far so good. But damn I was wrong when I got to the blue/green background. I noticed the dvd wasn't spinning my computer was just sitting there. It was frozen though since I could still move the mouse. So I was like oh man... cmon vista... Well I waited a little bit not to much though cause I think it should just pop up and start working. It wasnt doing that so I knew something was wrong......
Recently I noticed that my Internet's upload speed is EXTREMELY low. No problem with Download, I have almost a 3M Download. But i ran a speed test on peedtest.net -The Global Broadband Speed Test, and downlaod was fine, no problem, but i simply wouldn't upload. I tried sending an email with a small attachment, very slow, took like 30 minutes to add the attachement. I have AVG 8.0 Internet Security, with everything turned on.

How do I log in as an administrator? I understand, that this is some"hidden" account, and my name, even if I set it as administrator, does not have FULL administrator rights. So, how do I log-in as "true"administrator.
I'm over Microsoft already too many problems (from office mainly). First problem is I cant open anything unless I run as admin but I can live with that for now. When i open word theres no line blip thing and when I type there is nothing. The only way I can type is if I open a template or an existing document. I tried highlighting but nothing is highlighted. I tried going on print preview to see if anything is even there but there's nothing.
Where is the tab/command to initialize (fdisk?) a new HDD?
I am logged in as Administrator (system says so) with full control/permission.
I can see the hard drives in the Device Manager/Disk Drives. All drives are "good" per the controller and I can see them as physical devices on the computer.
They all show as "Not Initialized" when I ask each to opopulate the Volumes info, and there is no obvious/apparent way to do it. Nothing on the controller shows it either.
Tried "Simple New Volume" under Disk Management--
doesn't/won't work because drive is not initialized.
I am using the techinque to get the TokenElevationType using the API GetTokenInformation on Vista to determine if a user is an admin. It seems to work fine on Vista Business/Ultimate etc. However, it fails on Vista Home. Does anyone have any clues? The code is along the following lines:
switch (elevationType) { case TokenElevationTypeDefault: TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeDefault - User is not using a split token")); m_bAdmin = FALSE; break;
case TokenElevationTypeFull: TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeFull - User has a split token, and the process is running elevated")); m_bAdmin = TRUE; break;
case TokenElevationTypeLimited: TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeLimited - User has a split token, but the process is not running elevated")); m_bAdmin = TRUE; break; }
i was messing around with the user accounts. For some reason when i go to switch user or log of I only have the option to log on as a regular user without admin rights. its says AMD below the picture... Now if i go into the user account settings i see my created admin account but i can not make any changes since I have no admin rights on the account i am logged in with. When I try to switch users I cant because only the account with no rights appears.
I tried to boot in save mode to see if the admin account is hidden...it is not but it says ASP.NET with the name of the admin account ( no idea if that means any thing) When I try to unhide a account if gives me error messages. So I have an admin account but it is not visible when trying to log in..in order for me to install programs or allow downloads in need to be the admin.
I need to get something straight with the underlying security layers or ermisisions of vista (ultimate). I have created a group SUPERUSER in which I have added my admin user account (NOTE, not administrator but another account with Administrative privileges, i.e. is part of group Administrators).
I have only added this one account to the superuser, and NOT the administrator. Now... This is because I wish that the superuser has a folder lets say where not even the other administrators can access! Question is this: Should I add SYSTEM as well as SuperUser (both with full rights) and remove ALL OTHER GROUPS to this folder.........
Upon restarting after attempting to change my SID [I KNOW. STUPID MOVE ON MY PART], I cannot access my old (Admin) account on my PC. Is there ANY way to recover from this? I mean there has to be some kind of solution to getting the account back considering my hard drive is still filled with all of the data stored on the user account & I can still see the folder on my guest account, just can't access it.
A friend of my sisters has asked me to look at her PC, as it keeps "just crashing". A thorugh technical description to help I know!.However, I have found that the PC, which is running Vista Home Premium, has 3 user accounts.
1) Admin account with password 2) Standard User 3) Guest
I can not log into the admin account as I do not have the password, and my sisters friend is unreachable.The standard user account, wont letme do anything remotely techy, or use any system tools, or install my own PC diagnostic tools. The user account doesn't have the correct permission. It wont even update any of the virus definitions with out asking for the password.I have a copy of Active Password changer, that I have used in the past in these circumstances, but the PC was bought from a big retail chain, and has been set up with the usual hidden partion with important files on it. So Active Password Changer can not see the partion with the SAM database on it to change the admin password.
