i have tried to get my system restore to work and it comes up with a error when i want to create a point. Reason: The shadow copy provider had a unexpected error while trying to process the specified option (0x8004230F)
View 4 RepliesI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

I tried it in safe mode and it gave me the same error message.

After a fresh boot, when I try to open "system restore" from the start
menu... my computer seems to go nowhere. Nothing appears to happen. If I
do it a second (and on) time, I get a message that says "system restore
wizard is already running", when in fact it is not (per task manager).
Also, about an hour after the FIRST attempt to open system restore... I get a
screen that sais "no restore points have been created on your computer's
system disk..."
If I go to System Properties - System Protection tab to see if I can create
a restore point... I get a continuous "searching" in the Automatic Restore
Points section, and the "create" button is not available (not highlighted).
The "system restore" button is also unavailable (not highlighted).
My husband did something to the sound card or the program that creates sound on my computer. The computer thinks it no longer has a sound device. I wanted to restore to the point before he did this but it was a few months ago. When i try to do a system restore to that date it wont let me go back that far. I am not sure how to do this? Is there a way to restore windows to the orignal? I bought the computer with windows vista on it so i do not have a backup disk for windows it jsut came with it, but is there a way i can still re-install it.

After rebooting and logging in message says (System restore unable to restore your files due to an unknown error). The reason I was trying to restore is the wife was unable to access many programs on her login. When you clicked the start button on her login the program files were empty and we were prompted to do system restore. Everything was fine on my login and we are both set up as administrators. I also tried system restore from the start repair boot process same thing. Reading other posts I do not use norton antivirus but avast's free one. View 6 Replies View RelatedI was recently given a Medion desktop pc (its a second hand one), and i want to recover it back to factory settings. I got nothing with the pc, no disks or anything.It has one HDD which is partitioned into two drives, one of which is called "recover" and contains what i assume to be files that will reset the pc to factory settings and install all of the orginal content again. This drive has no .exe file in it, or any other file extention that i can do anything with. The appears to be no program that i can find that will recover the pc.
how i restore it factory settings? Confused_ms p.s. The DVD-rom is not working at the min, so even if i did have a disk i wouldnt be able to use it. p.p.s. The pc has 2.8ghz processer (pentium D), 250gb HDD, 1GB RAM, Vista home prem OS Btw, the pc also has no internet connection, however i do have another computor so i can download things and transfer them over. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with Vista Home Premium a couple years old but all up to date and everything. It was working fine, but I was messing around in the startup menu tonight and accidently cleared the wrong box. To make a long story short, after the machine restarted, nothing worked. I can't access system restore to fix it because it tells me that system restore isn't working, and that the volume shadow copy service isn't working. The error code on that is 0x81000202. Also the event log isn't working, apparently Windows Explorer isn't working, so much isn't working, and it won't connect to the wireless router so I've lost the Internet connection. I don't even know enough about the problem to say what exactly isn't working, but the machine is useless now. I've run every internal diagnostic I can find and the memory is fine, but something critical obviously stopped running when I cleared that box. I can't access the startup menu to reconfigure it either. Does anybody have any clues as to what I've done and how to fix it short of doing a clean install of the operating system?

This attempt failed, I went into SAFE mode and tried again and I get a message "The Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log. (0x81000202). I go to the Event Viewer and it fails "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running." When I go to the "Services" I don't see any entry for the "Event Log" - what should I be looking for? How do I get the system restore working?

View 5 Replies View Relatedrunning Vista Home Premium (32-bit). When you log into Windows, you immediately get the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working". Then it says explorer is restarting, restarts your desktop, then is ok for about 3 seconds. The error then pops back up and it is stuck in that loop.
It started when he clicked on some popup he shouldn't have. I removed a trojan identified by Mcafee as exploit-byte verify. I have also disabled all startup programs and services (except windows services) through msconfig. However, I am still getting this error popup. Unfortunately, he had previously turned off the system restore option and got rid of the recovery partition.
Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

If I go into system protection I get this error: C:WindowsSystem32SYSDM.CPL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.

That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. I could care less about the virus in the restore files, my main goal is to get my cd/dvd drive working again so I can install my business software.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy college aged daughter's laptop formerly worked fine but now has odd networking issues which prevent the system from browsing the internet. The system correctly obtains a DHCP address and is able to ping by name, can correctly run AIM and Microsoft Sidebar but still can not connect the IE7.0 Browser to the internet.
I have read a ton of links here within the Network and Sharing group but I haven't seen anything quite like this before. Even though the I know better, I still went through the exercise of testing for DNS issues as well as the often suggested MTU test but there weren't any issues. I have completely shut off the Microsoft Firewall to no avail. The system came with a free trial of Norton Internet Security but after it expired, I loaded a Symantec/Norton Antivirus (NAV 10.1) and did a complete virus scan which produced nothing. I also did a full spyware scan which also didn't locate any serious malware......
Daughters laptop was reporting that the HDD was about to fail, should backup and repair.
The concensus of opinion suggested a new HDD was the answer.
Have done that and created the restore disks from the original HDD.
Started the restore and went ok until nearly at the end of formatting the new HDD when I got the message
"error if it happens again contact HP" it did not happen again and appeared to restore files ok, did a verify and no errors.
Trying to boot from the HDD it now fails. Errors report registry incorrect plus others.
Cannot load my Vista version as is 64bit.
I cannot obviously send the errors to MS as the thing will not boot.
Any solutions obvious apart from getting a disk containing Vista 32 bit system
Laptop is an HP Presario running Vista HOme Premium 32.
I want to dual boot a Linux Kubuntu OS. After reading I see that if I decide to delete the Linux partition later, I won't be able to boot into Widows until the MBR is repaired/replaced. Is there an easy way to do this? I have the Oem installation Disk.

Is it possible to make an image backup with this operating system?
Also if a file backup completes successfully and is backed up on a network drive will I be able to restore from a new install of window vista premium on the same laptop that was backed up to the network drive? Is there a better way using vista premium? I have Norton Ghost 12.0 on my desktop but not on the laptop with vista premium. Don't what to have to buy a license for laptop if there is another way to make sure in case of a failure of the operating system that I could recover by an full backup or image ? I do some beta testing and do not want to spend hours re-loading software.
Is there any utility built into Vista or XP to allow one to create a complete system restore DVD?

I am now wishing to restore one of my backups to restore my system to its original state.
When i go to the backup and restore section in the cp i am not able to restore from a backup and am told the bacup disk cannot be found.
I really need that backup cos i had all my music, photos, programs(i hope) in that backup.
