Am reinstalling Windows Vista after a virus infected my PC. I am reinstalling vista but after booting from DVD Vista does not recognise my SATA hard disk on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen. There are no issues with the hard disk and this happened once before but I can't remember how I solved this. My problem is the Vista installer not recognising my hard disk so I can install Vista. I have an Alienware pc with hitachi deskstar hard disk and asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard.
I have to reinstall as a virus has caused my windows explorer to malfunction and it also installed a trojan which stole my key.I have tried a couple of ASUS raid drivers via a usb hard disk with no luck. We can't find any appropriate hitachi drivers.I think this is related to the hard disk controller?
I've basically screwed up documents and important stuff so i need help reinstalling vista from the dvd, Formatting the hard drive. My M/B is a ga-p35-ds3l and i cant use my keyboard if the shut down is forced it auto chooses.
For some reason, I cannot see a 1TB hard disk in Vista Explorer. There are no relevant messages in the event logs etc. I can save data to it (via apps, word, excel, downloads etc). I just cannot see it in windows when I go to my computer. Also, can't seem to find anything pertinent on the web, lost about a vista drive not being seen by windows 7 (vice versa), but not what I am looking for. My concern is that if Windows won't display the drive, it may be going bad and it's only 6 months old. Any pointer(s)
How do I stop Vista from chewing on my disks. I have had a failure of my C: hard disk and i want to stop Vista from chewing on my disk. Had to replace it and reinstall everything
I have four (4) hard disks C: D: E: F: all are connected with sata cable and power cable.(of course) The F: is outside from the pc and connected via external SATA and power cable (like usb NOT usb) I know,with USB external hard disk i can use the safely remove option.
Is there any option to safely remove SATA hard disk without Shut Down the pc?

1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?
I have a Vista Premium PC where I installed a trial version of a program,let it expire and now I bought the full version but cannot seem to get it to install since the ghost of the old trial version seems to be haunting my PC. Before I start formatting the drive (and lose all my other programs and settings) and attempt to reinstall Vista, I was wondering whether there was some easy way to wipe all traces of the trial program? I am no great tech expert, so protracted brain surgery with registry settings may not be an option for me!
i own a PC where Windows Vista was originally installed on it, but the XP OS was installed over it. I want to reinstall Vista. The issue is that when i purchased the machine in never received a systems disk so all i have is the product key sticker that's located underneath the PC it's self. I recently built a new computer and I would like to move my current install of Vista to the new system without reinstalling it. My only problem is that both setups will be using a raid 0 array for the installation and I don't know if I will be able to boot off the old disks with the new hardware. My old PC was a nForce 4 based AMD rig and my new one is a P35 based Intel rig. Is there a way that I can install the drivers for the new raid array prior to booting with it?
how to change the user name on a Vista operated computer without completely reinstalling the operating system software and all the applications that already installed? I need to put her name in as the user and remove mines.
I may have to re-install the Vista operating system on my primary hard drive. According to Dell, installing/re-installing Vista will erase any existing files (gee, why couldn't they have configured Vista like XP which would save your data?).So as not to loose my files, my plan is to install a new primary hard drive. And once the new drive is functioning properly, to add the old one as a data only secondary drive (The drive hasn't failed, it's just inaccessable due to a user logon password issue which I'm working in another thread). Does anyone see a problem with reading the data files/folders on the old drive? Will the existance of an operating system be a problem? I'm hoping the drive will act as a ghosted drive, and the answer will be no.
My Disk is split into 2 partitions, Vista (C: ) and Data (E, each is about 70 Gb. I do not use the Data partition. I want to delete it and allow Vista(C to use all 140 Gb. The Help pages suggest that if I delete (or reduce the size of) "Data", the free space becomes unallocated? Can I repartition the disk to allow Vista C: to acces all 140 Gb?
I need to replace my wife's motherboard, and I am trying to minimize the amount of change. She is currently running XP, but the hardware is old enough that I cannot simply swap the MBs, because a new board will need a different HAL. I was thinking about installing XP and migrating applications. I was wondering what would happen if I cloned her disk to a SATA disk and installed a Vista upgrade on top of the XP disk. I would run setup and provide the appropriate drivers at the F6 prompt. She has used Vista on occasion when we are out-of-town. I have a separate userID on my laptop that is configured to look as much as possible like XP. The question is whether a Vista upgrade would work on top of an XP image that used a lot of older hardware.
Hi, new here. I have a sony vaio laptop that has been working perfectly up until a few days ago. I got a blue screen that said unmountable boot volume. I have a vista restore/repair disk but no sony restore disks.I'm not really sure if mine came with any? I used the vista disk and when i try to repair it it says no hard disk found as the error. Is there a way to get my computer to see the hard disk? I've tried using the command prompt but a lot of things i've tried like chkdsk aren't working or i'm not sure what they mean.
I have had a problem where, apparently at random, my hard drive starts running and ties up my laptop to the point nothing will run. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes. I have not been able to reproduce this on purpose, but yesterday it happened 3 times when I started either Outlook or Foxfire. Today it happened when I tried to sync my PDA. I have tried to turn off any indexing I can find, but no help. It doesn't always happen every day, but will do it several times a week. I am running on a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium.
We have 2 identical Dell XPS desktop PCs, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium SP1.For a few years now we've been using a Linksys cable modem which has 4 Ethernet outlets (numbered 1-4) and paired antennas for Wireless-G. My PC was on Ethernet output 1 and my wife's PC was on a Wireless-G adapter. Recently my ISP doubled its speed to 16,000 kbps, but this seemed to have very little effect on my wife's Wireless speed. Rather than hassle with the wireless system, I uninstalled the Wireless-G adapter and ran a new Ethernet cable from output 2 to my wife's PC.The weird thing is that when both PCs are turned on and connected to the Internet, my PC (Ethernet 1 output) seems to be continuallyaccessing the hard drive. While this is happening, the output 1 and output 2 LED's on the modem are madly flickering, as is the disk access light on the PC. No unusual hard disk activity is going on with the wife's PC. If I shut down either PC, this excessive hard disk activity doesn't take place and the output light (1 or 2) is steady. I've even tried leaving both systems totally inactive for many hours, other than an automatic check for mail every 5 minutes.
Every 1/2 hour or so I'd look in and see that the hard drive activity is still going on and the output lights are flickering. Whatever is going on is happening whether the PCs are active or idle. This has been going on for 3 days now, 16 hours a day, ever since I added the new Ethernet line!
if there are any good hard disk utilities available that perform more comprehensive testing/correction than those performed by Windows own check disk utility?
i have a sata hard drive running windows vista 32 business. how would i format the hard drive completely and start again? i did a reinstall last weekend but it would not give me the option for format from the DVD, it just gave me a "windows.old" folder which wasn't really what i wanted.
I am using Vista Home Premium, so I do not have the CompletePC Backup feature, sadly. I just finished reinstalling VISTA and a ton of programs, only to realize stupidly that I am running out of hard disk space because of all the downloading I am doing. It would be pure hell to have to reinstall everything again.
I want to replace my hard drive with one with double the capacity. Can I copy / backup / whatever the entire c drive on to an external drive, then copy the entire contents back on to the new disk drive? Apparently, I have to purchase a product such as Acronis True Image Family.
I've used this forum A LOT to find answers to the many problems I've had with my pc - now I have one that I can't find a solution for, so here I am posting! I'm trying to format a new Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB hdd but it won't go any further than 73%. Computer Management tells me that its still formatting (i.e. NO error message) but its been there for hours. I've tried formatting from the Vista installation cd during boot but it plain refused (I forget the error message), it won't even do a quick format in Computer Management. Is my drive humped?
I can't afford to lose any of my data (who can?), I'd like to have something on my laptop that monitors the hard drive - and any external USB drives. Free is good but I also want quality. Perhaps some readers have suggestions for software for me? Don't worry, I keep an external hard drive for backup and use it often. But, it wouldn't hurt if I had something to monitor my drives. The external hard drives crap out to often and leave me without a backup until I replace it.
Hey again I???m here as a new user of vista and Im going trough a bunch of problems. As for now one day I ran the diskeeper and some how I lost 45 GB of hard disk space for no real reason. After that I ran it again but it didnt help, I don???t know if it has to do with the diskeeper or maybe some other type of problem with the computer applications.
Recnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. For my other hard disks, when I right click, I got the option to scan for virus. This option isn't in the list when I right click this new station. Here are the menu list by right clicking on the HDD's.
How do you exactly partition a hard drive or can some one tell me a good place to get a partitioning program or website for a free partitioning program downlaod and what is a good program cause i want to get a good program and not a peice of crud.
