Profile Shows As 'Unknown' & The 'copy To' Option Is Grayed Out
Mar 3, 2010One of the small networks I manage had a Win2k DC that crashed. We replaced it with a 2008 SBS & since most of the clients were XP, I was able to join computers to the new domain & copy the profiles from the old location to the new location. That was until I got to the Vista laptop. On this computer, the profile shows as 'Unknown' & the 'copy to' option is grayed out.
I am currently copying the contents of the C:Usersusername folder to the C:Usersuser.newdomain folder. Will this be all I need? Is there an easier way? Also, under system properties>user profiles that Unknown profile shows to be 42.9 GB, but the folder I am copying is only 19.7 GB. Why such a huge difference?

I tried selecting all and then send to Z:, but it took about six hours to copy about 20 gig (I have about 180 gig to copy)
I read some where that robocopy is a faster and better way to copy files.The thing is I do not know what syntax to use. I was wondering if someone could tell me the syntax I should use to copy EVERYTHING from the usb driveK: to the network drive Z:

May 1, 2008My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

Mar 23, 2008I have tried to format my computer, first I tried by just inserting the disc, no luck, then I tried booting it from the disc, no luck then I tried going into computer management right clicking my c drive but the format option is no available. Sep 18, 2009When you right click on a program you get the box that opens giving you all kinds of options; run as administrator, scan with, etc. What do you call that box? I am running Vista, but a friend is running XP. She used to have listed in that box the option to scan with her anti virus program, but she no longer does. Is there a way, in XP, to add this to that box?

May 20, 2009Suddenly, my computer freezed (just like it has been doing for some time now). When I restarted it, the computer asked for the Vista DVD, so that it could repair some files (I couldn't even boot into Safe Mode). I put the DVD inside the drive, and choose the "Repair your computer" option, but it reports that no Vista installation is found...
I then boot into the Rescue and Recovery environment (that is a Thinkpad suite, located in another partition of the disk) to see what's going on. The System Information detects everything except the Hard Drive (it reports "Not Available" for the fields "Hard disk free space" and "Hard disk capacity"). I also can't see the harddisk in the option to backup the files to a pen (the pen is recognized, though). Just to be sure, I run PC Doctor and my hard disk passes all tests.
Option In Contacts Folder NOT SEEN
Feb 7, 2009I'm new to the Forum so I hope I'm doing this correctly. Anyway, initially I was trying to create a mailing group, but could not see a choice for that option in my Contacts folder. Turns out it was set on "Pictures and Videos" and I read, in this Forum, how to fix that so it would show my list of contacts, and would therefore show the choice for setting up a group. That worked fine. My problem is - my changes don't seem to want to stay! For instance, today I was working in my picture folders, and then when I went back into Windows Mail and clicked on Contacts, it was back to showing "Pictures and Videos!" Why won't it stay on Contacts after I configure the folder? I do click "Apply" and then "OK," but that doesn't seem to make a difference. It keeps changing back.

Sep 6, 2009In an effort to speed up my start up time I downloaded instructions from Microsoft's download site. One option used Windows Defender. I tried that. It changed nothing. I then tried an option using msconfig. I unchecked certain programs leaving my Anti Virus and Microsoft Operating programs. After a restart nothing had changed. The desktop still had the same icons. Should Get Option To Choose Installation Language?
Mar 23, 2008When I start windows home premium on a new pc for the first time should i get an option to choose the installation language? I bought a pc in germany and the start up failed i got an error message in an endless loop i got it to start with the recovery disc but that has set it to German and i cant change it. Can anyone confirm or not that if the set up had run correctly i should have been offered the option to set up in English. if this is the case i can go back to the manufacturer and complain.

This feature is very annoying, as right button dragging to a folder and selecting move will also deselect sorts as well.
