I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I installed Vista Ultimate on a machine that came with Home Edition Premium. I thought that the system would automatically join the network domain, but nothing happened. I found an option called Network Discovery, click the On option and the Apply button, but it change didn't take affect.

But I have Problem when trying to join it's Domain. In My Client Windows Vista I receive this message when I try to connect My Domain: "The format of the specified network name is invalid"
My Client DNS server is the same as My server. 1 month ago I join my clients in a different domain name . I change it to workgroup. after then I can't join any domain.
I've been asked to find software that will see what websites our 25 employees are going to. Does anyone know any software that's good for this purpose? I do not want to have to install anything on the workstations themselves unless absolutely neccessary. I don't need full on keylogging or anything either - just simply websites viewed. Also just to complicate things further, the workstations are XP, Vista, and OSx too. Is there something that just scans port 80 perhaps that would do the job? I'm using a BT Business router that can't log websites vistied. I don't want to install ISA either really.

I've worked in IT for awhile now and seen some great improvements in operating systems over the years. Upgrading from 2000 to XP, there was a clear benefit, but I can't see one from XP to vista. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with vista, but I don't want to have to go through the hassle of imaging about 2,500 workstations if i don't have to.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 to use with my Asus N70S Laptop which is on Vista 64-bit SP2, with integrated bluetooth. For some reason none of my bluetooth devices (my cell phone, and the mouse) will be discovered. I've set the bluetooth settings to "Discoverable" etc., and the correct services are enabled. Nothing comes up on the "Add a wireless device" page. I don't know what I have to do to get my devices to be discovered. I just saw that on my Device Manager, Bluetooth Remote Control, Bluetooth Hands-free Audio, Bluetooth Hands-free Audio., and Bluetooth Stereo Audio all have the yellow exclamation point on their icons.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.
I've tried ..
- disabling IPv6
- updating drivers (there were no updates)
- multiple scans
- disabling firewall
- uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download)
- deleting my router profile and trying to connect again
- connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)
When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.
** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................

View 5 Replies View RelatedDesktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

mixture of XP and Vista machines connecting to the server. I have created a
domain, and I can connect all my XP machines to the domain just fine.
The trouble with Vista is that whenever I try to log into the domain, the
screen comes up with an error:
"The User Profile Service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded."
Unfortunitely I'm not a major networking guru, so I can't really figure out
what Vista is expecting here just to connect to a domain. I assumed that
something this basic in networking wouldn't have been so complicated.
Why does it take so long for Vista to join a domain? I have a vista pro machine. Locally everything works fine local user signs on builds the desktop quickly. From the local profile I join a domain. It finds the domain quickly, then asks to reboot.. I reboot sign on as the admin of the domain.. Next step is to build the desktop for the user I'm signing on as.. It just sits on the welcome screen spinning. I do not experience this problem on XP machines joining this same domain. I've also tested it on a Windows 7 machine and did not experience this problem.. I can't figure out why it takes so long on Vista.. I actually never get to the point of building the desktop..I don't really see any hard drive activity either?

View 8 Replies View RelatedWe are running at my work 2 workgroups. My CoWorker and I are on a domain and need to connect to one of the servers on the workgroup using a simulation program. We get access denied error messages in the simulator program. Windows Explorer connects just fine to the workgroup server though.
We think there is a problem with the password security policy on the workgroup not being up to standard of my domain's security policy. The password to log into the server causes an error message saying the password is "too long, too short, or not complex enough." when we try to create a user account.
We have a Windows Server 2003 active directory domain, ISA server with VPN, and one Windows Vista client. The Vista owner calls me every time he wants to connect with VPN, and tells me that he cannot. Looking in Active Directory shows me, that his domain user account is locked out. When I unlock the account he is able to login. It seems that something (a service? office 2007?) does try to authenticate with wrong credentials, and locks his account every time it can.
I have the default settings for the account lockout policy, threshold of 3, and 0 for lockout duration. This problem is really annoying so much, that I think about to tell him to uninstall Vista and install XP again. The XP users don't have this problem at all. I've looked around in the web and found some other users that have the same problem. But I found no solution for it.
I'm currently trying to connect my laptop which has Vista Business 32-bit to my Poweredge T105 which is running Server 2003 RC2. I get this error when running Network ID:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error occured:

I have read that I need to setup a DNS server, however, I never did this in XP and never had a problem browsing for computers/hardware. What am I missing? What services are necessary for AD?
Is it possible to create one rule to handle this rather than a rule for every user of that domain?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista Ultimate 64; Office 2007 Professional Plus; Epson NX510 All in one Printer, is default printer under Printers. Will print test page and document saved on desktop. Will not print a saved or new doc. Document goes to "Not Responding" when print command is used. Do a esc to clear, then Print properties box opens. In drop down menu no printer shown, click on drop down menu arrow and printer is shown, highlight and click ok, nothing happens, does not enter it. Click on find printer get the following "Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailible".
Do a quick print command, "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup." Click ok, next window comes up "Print Setup" shows as No Default Printer, Printers list the Epson NX510 Series, highlight it but Set as Default Printer will not activate, (remains grayed out), click options- "Word cannot bring up the properties dialog because the printer returned an error"....
Here is a Vista Remote Desktop problem we are having. It affects every Vista machine I have seen on our network. I believe this is going to be a tough one? Remote machine? Vista Enterprise on Windows 2003 AD network. Local machine? Vista, any version, domain member or not, connecting from within the network. When trying to complete the Remote Desktop connection using a domain account, the user gets the following error:???No authority could be contacted for authentication. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support.??? If the local (client) machine is running XP, no problem. If you use an account local to the remote Vista machine, no problem (not surprisingly). Strangest of all, if I try to make the connection from a machine outside of our network, no problem.(Normally the firewall would block that, but I temporarily allowed RDP from anywhere.)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a production network that I'm test Windows Vista x64 Enterprise on. I'm at my witts end with this problem: I add the Vista PC to the Windows domain. The computer performs the tasks and then tells me it needs to reboot. Upon rebooting it immeadiately drops itself from Active Directory (Windows 2003 SP2 R2 based domain).
Oddly, the computer account in active directory is still there. The Vista client drops itself, but the server side thinks everything is fine. What the heck is causing this? There are no issues with IPv4 connectivity. (We don't use IPv6...) The server shows that the PC and the users are connecting to the domain securely, and without issues (pass security audits). The Vista Client (Enterprise x64) just drops itself from Active Directory.

I feel like something is wrong with the update system. I reinstalled Vista and disabled automatic updates. However, after a while I started to get the same problem. I have Office, Visual Studio, Messenger and a few Adobe products installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOur network is 2003 AD with XP clients and about 120 vista enterprise machines. When you try to change your domain password on a vista box is tells you the username or password are incorrect, doing the same on XP machine is fine. We have another seperate 2003 AD network using the same Vista image, here we have no problem. Everyone group would appear to have change password permissions, like I say all on XP is fine but not Vista on this AD. We have update to SP1 on Vista, no change and Group Policy looks fine.
