I try to install SP1 from the windows update or from the stand alone version. I keep getting this code " 8024200D " from the windows update. Its the only update I see on the Windows Update available. The laptop is running Vista Home Premium. I ran the sfc /scannow and it didn't find anything wrong . I also ran the memory test with memtest 86+ and found no errors. Is there a way to fix this?
View 8 RepliesThat is the message I get from the icon in my Vista tray. When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.

I received an error: Error details: Code 57A. I tried multiple times to install, all with the same error. I did try downloading the update to my desktop, and install with the option "run as administrator...no luck. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium.

I can't switch into safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with Command Prompt and Last Known good configuration. I don't know how to solve this problem because I can't get into any of the modes and even I inserted the installation disc I can't still see any repair computer or what. gives me the "click here for help" After clicking (obviously ) there are 5 things MS has you do. I tried all 5 and my computer passed,
but SP1 still will not install.
Thinking that maybe Updater was being mean, I dowloaded the stand alone update. When I run that it installs to 50%, then hangs and requires it to be manually cancelled.
The only error I get is "Code 800736B3" which seems to only refer to Dreamscene, and not SP1. That or my google-fu is weak.
I couldn't make my lap-top update. Gives me "couldn't check update" and "update-error code 80070246". And also while starting-up it gives me "checking uptades" after welcome message.

Dell Tech Support said that was probably due to the fact that my PC has all the important updates installed, and to offer to install SP1 would be duplicative and might involve downloading duplicative files. But does this make sense? Would I then just keep installing routine important updates, waiting till SP 2 comes out? In any case, I am reluctant to download SP 1 directly from the Microsoft website, as they strongly recommend against doing so.

However when i tried following those steps, i got to step 6 and the Windows AIK Command Prompt said it "cannot find the path specified." I'm pretty sure i have the same error as that one though, meaning a corrupted GlobalInstallOrder.xml file. I don't think it can find that file because I'm using a 64-bit system. Didn't catch the error code, but the message said if Windows won't restart, insert startup disc and do a repair. That is what I ended up doing as Windows simply wouldn't start up. Anyway, repair worked but my desktop looks like from a week ago. The desktop icons for Thunderbird and a couple of other recently installed programs are no longer there. Their program folders, however, are still in the Program Files folder but with no .exe file. Is there a way to repair the programs so that they are in sync with my current windows install?

First, a bit of background. I purchased the Vista system in May 2008. Last ran a Windows update on 21 June 2008. Why? Because the first time I ran a Live Update with NIS 2008, my wireless connection broke. So, I decided to not do anything significant, on the internet, until I got rid of NIS 2008 and replaced it with something better, KIS 2008. I did this yesterday. So, I ran a Windows update last night. As it had been 10 months, there were about 379MB of files. Since I am still on dial-up (expect to switch to broadband after I straighten out this update issue, hopefully, next week), I let the critter run overnight.
