Dec 21, 2008Deep inside the bowels of Windows Vista, there’s a secret Administrator account, and it’s different from the normal administrator account you most likely have set up on your PC. This Administrator account is not part of the Administrator group. (Confused yet? You should be.) It’s a kind of superadministrator, akin to the root account in Unix, and by default it’s turned off and hidden. (In describing this tut, i’ll always use the capital “A” for the secret Administrator account, and a lowercase “a” for a normal administrator account.)
In versions of Windows before Windows Vista, the Administrator account wasn’t hidden, and many people used it as their main or only account. This Administrator account had full rights over the computer. In Windows Vista, Microsoft changed that. In Vista, the Administrator account is not subject to UAC, but normal administrator accounts are. So the Administrator can make any changes to the system and will see no UAC prompts.....

Apr 1, 2009A friend of mine doesn't have a computer at home, and uses one at the Senior Center every day. Since they're public computers, all the settings are reset to defaults when they're rebooted, which happens automatically overnight even if nobody does it manually. He was talking about having to change settings to the way he likes them every day -- unlock the taskbar, show Quick Launch, set the font face and size in WordPad, set the margins on Page Setup, allow active content to run from local files in IE,... It amused me to write a little app that changed all these settings to the way he liked them, using CreateProcess to start up apps, and SendMessage to send keystrokes and mouse clicks to them. I gave it to him so he could put it on his flash drive and run it when he got to the Senior Center every morning. When he watched it running, popping up app windows and changing their settings, he asked me, "So you have something that records keystrokes, and now you're just playing them back?"
His question sort of intrigued me. I heard of something like this a few years ago, somebody I talked to at Yahoo chess was running long joke messages through the chat area. He said he had something that would record his keystrokes and save them as "macros", and play them back. Apparently there's shareware out there that does this kind of thing, but as you might guess from what I've already said, I write computer programs for fun, and with shareware, somebody else gets to have all the fun. Besides that, I never put shareware on my computer anyway, because of the possibility that it contains viruses or worms or whatever. I've fiddled around some, trying to figure out how to record keystrokes and mouse clicks. First I tried to use SetCapture, but as soon as the mouse clicks on something outside the app window that has the capture, it loses the capture. Then I tried setting up a transparent window over the whole screen and passing on all mouse clicks and keystrokes to the window that would receive it if my transparent window weren't there, but that didn't work either, because windows react differently to input if they're covered up by another window, even if it's transparent.....
Shortcuts Unlock Toolbar Folder Is Showing
Oct 28, 2008To the right of "Shortcuts" toolbar, you can see a bit of the first folder (the yellow thing). If I unlock the taskbar, it goes away, but if I lock the taskbar, that yellow part of the first folder is showing. In XP, this doesn't happen... does anyone know how to fix this in vista?

I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. Does anyone have any inexpensive suggestions on how I can get into this computer, or how I can get to a command prompt. Can I un-solder the internal Battery and then re attach it.

Jan 14, 2009I think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.

We tried to go into the safe mode but the only screen we get is his password sign on screen. Even during boot we pressed f8 key but the password screen came up. He is hoping someone has an idea or answer so he can avoid taking it into get looked at and paying money.

Feb 18, 2010I have my computer, and I need to set a password, but if I do, what happens is that it loads the user selection screen first, even though I'm the only user. Because of that, if I turn on my computer, go downstairs to do something,and come back up 5 minutes later, the computer will be stuck on the user selection screen, whereas if I don't have a password, it'll automatically load all the applications (this takes a while...).

But I have never "set" the "administrator password" or "super admin
password".
I do, however, have a user account with admin privileges that I set a
password to.
Is that the same thing? Does my creating a user account with admin
privileges and password make the password for the super-admin the same, or
will the vista admin password still remain blank?
I'm wondering if this is the case, if a hacker tried to break into my system
to grab files, if I never set the administrator/super-admin password, does
that mean there is none, and they just walk right in,
or does it default to the password I have on my user account with admin
privileges?

Possible To Remotely Set The Password?
Mar 22, 2009I am overseas for a while. So to be able to access my Vista computer at home, I installed Log Me In program, which works great for me in other environments. However, I've found out that I can't access my PC because the account on my Vista box does not have a password set (e.g. it's blank). Log Me In, it turns out, requires a password.
However, I am able to get to other computers (all running Windows XP) on my home network (i have 4 PCs in the house doing various things) via Remote Desktop and VNC. My question is whether it is possible to remotely (via Windows XP computers that are on my network) change the password for the account on my Vista computer?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (a special waadaad Promo version I received at the #PopTech! Conference last October) via VMWare on my Mac. Aug 19, 2009I know this is a Vista group, I have xp, and two different windows 7 OS's on my hdd for eval. My wife has put a logon password on one of the 7 installs and forgot it.
