Faulty Program Caused Computer To Lose Icons
Mar 23, 2008i installed a faulty program and now folder icons have been lost. i know i could live with this but it is really getting on my nerves!!!

XP Seems To Lose Network Connectivity To The Vista Computer
Apr 20, 2010Have a small network consisting of one Win XP Media Center Ed. and one Vista home premium (and an Internet router). The Vista crashed and was restored to factory and apps reinstalled, etc. Each computer has dedicated IP address, and each runs a version of Norton Internet Security. They are in the same workgroup. Prior to the Vista problem, all was generall well. Now, the XP seems to lose network connectivity to the Vista computer when the computers are turned on in the morning. This is important for many reasons, including that the XP uses a printer attached to the Vista for most of the XP's printing needs.
I have set up a user on Vista that matches the user on XP, and have set the NIS on Vista to allow all connections to the IP of the XP box. And all is well until that reboot. There may be more to that, but in the few days the rebuilt Vista has been up, that has been the story. I have been able to restore the connection by launching Network Places, and searching for the name of the Vista computer. It so far does not show up in the network view until I do a manual search using the computer name. Then when it comes up and I double-click on the Vista C: drive, I'm prompted for login info, which I give and then I get connected (why is this not automatically done for me?). I've also mapped a drive to the Vista and set that for "reconnect at login."
No Network, Can I Test To See If The Switch Is Faulty
Aug 2, 2009Have HP Presario 500, 32bit (nVidea nforce 10/100 ethenet) that was working fine until suddenly no network was recognized- no wireless. When I try to create a connection I get "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured", however under device manager It tells me that my card is working fine. It also tells me that my "6to4" adapter (whatever that is?) "Windows cannot load drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" So.... HP and I spent an hour on the phone to no avail. They said it was a known issue and although the laptop is out of warranty, they would repair it, so I sent the unit into HP. Three days later they tell me that it's going to cost $750 to repair my $400 laptop because my laptop has been "dropped".
When I received the unit back from HP (No, I didn't authorize the repairs) lo and behold the wireless light was blue , it recognized my network and all my neighbors as usual, and the wireless worked.... for 10 minutes. The next time I turned the unit on the wireless light was orange, and no network. The internet works fine when connected with a cable to the router. Other laptops can see my network and can connect so I know that it's not the router (Linksys WRG54GS)
Can I test to see if the switch is faulty?
Can I test to see if the internet card is faulty?
Can the 6to4 adapter drivers be at fault?
Is There Other Program To Tweak The Icons In Vista?
Dec 20, 2008Any input on Vista Visual Master? I've been looking online for reviews, and haven't found much. Found a couple of people who said they had some nasty stuff installed along with the program, but I just downloaded it from CNET...just don't want a virus or anything. OR, is there another program to tweak the icons in Vista?

Mar 29, 2008"All of a sudden" (that is, I am not aware of any specific action that caused this - probably after shutting down due to low battery while running winamp and 7zip), Vista business replaced program icons at the desktop and in the taskbar/Systray (the place where you put program icons) with icons of 7zip, a free packer. Klicking on these icons opened their folder with 7zip. After deinstalling 7zip, Vista now asks "which program to use to open this file" when i click on these icons. There are no programs to choose from, but you can search for these programs (lower right button) so that you can repopulate this window by hand one by one with some programs.
This does not work for some programs (eg regedit, which initiates the childproof "continue" dialog but doesn't show up. System recovery doesn't work either, i get access only by booting to F8/repair computer). Some Control center (?, "Systemsteuerung" in German) programs don't react neither. Those programs which kept their proper icon, result in "program not found" while the dialog box shows the correct path to the still existing exe-file.
What Caused The Upgrade Failure.
Apr 15, 2008A couple of months ago I assembled a new PC and put Windows Vsta Business on it. I started adding other applications and moving my files then was given a copy of Vista Ultimate. I tried to do an upgrade from Business to Ultimate but after about 10 minutes received a very generic message basically saying that the upgrade couldn't continue for no particular reason and when I hit OK it undid the changes and I was back where I started.
I ran Windows Update, and checked that my sytem had the required specs (everything was above 5.0 except the video card was only rated 3.8 which is OK, I don't do gaming). I tried the upgrade a couple of times to no avail. I would have tried in safe mode but the only option was to do a clean install. I would rather not do a clean install as I have personalized everything. How can I find out what caused the upgrade failure.

Mar 22, 2009Vista Ultimate 64. After installing IE 8, several gadgets stopped working correctly. Did some research and re-registered msxml3.dll, scrrun.dll,jscript.dll. Yet the problem persists.

Sep 21, 2009So i've been dealing with 100% CPU usage for the last 3 weeks. I've narrowed down the cause to the Flash plugin for ANY browser, regardless of IE or Firefox. Anytime Flash is loaded in the browser, the CPU shoot straight up to 100% until you close the browser. I've google'd solutions for this. The only one I've seen is the all FULL CONTROL for the Everyone user on two of the Flash drives. This does not work. So I tried something else.
I reformatted and started from scratch. As soon as the Flash plugin was installed, BOOM, right to 100% CPU usage again. This happened on both Vista x64 Ultimate w/ SP2 and a clean install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate RTM (It's a legal copy.)......
SmartSecurity Caused VISTA Machine To Core
Jun 6, 2008The installation of SmartSecurity caused my VISTA machine to core! I cannot boot up in windows! I can boot up in safe mode alone and safe mode with network connections, which is how I am getting this email to you. What do I do now? There is nothing listed as being installed on add/ remove programs, but there is a Start-Programs->Eset->EsetSmart Security with a few things listed. When I tried to uninstall to see if I could get a fresh install going- it said I could only uninstall apps that are installed. I don't know what to do!!

Update Nvidia Nforce Networking Controlle Caused Internet To Not Work Properly
Mar 23, 2008The Windows Update for the "nvidia nforce networking controller" caused my internet to not work properly. I restored my system and rolled back the driver, both on separate occasions to resolve this issue. It worked, however, now I need to know what to do about the update. I cannot leave my settings to update automatically because of this.

Nov 26, 2009I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

Jul 29, 2009Brother purchased new laptop. Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1. Turned on machine and connected fine via ethernet cable to home network. I logged in remotely and watched and acted when required as both Vista and McAfee downloaded and installed numerous updates. On one occassion when asked to restart now or later after McAfee finished updating, I chose later. I then installed LogMeIn on this computer so that upon reboot I would have more control.
That may or may have nothing to do with issue now but ever since then, when warm or cold re-start of computer is done, computer does not obtain an IP. Have to go to CPanel/Network/Diagnose and choose automatic rediscovery of IP which works just fine.
Start Computer Get Nothing No Icons Start Menu
May 11, 2008when i start my computer i get nothing no icons start menu or anything but i do get a my documents window and from there i have to ctrl alt delete then go to file run and run explorer does anyone know how to make it to where i dont have to do all that stuff to run explorer basically does anyone know how to make it where when i start my computer it is normal with explorer running?

Dec 6, 2008recently i have been having problems with my browsers. i use both safari and firefox over a wireless network at home.
i can happily surf for around 10 mins with safari, but after that time it is as though i have lost my connection to the internet. i can then use Firefox for a short time, around 5 mins after that, then the same problem arises. in order to get back online i have to restart my laptop.
i have no idea what the problem is, its been doing it for over a week now, and i need my internet as i have university deadlines coming up.
the router/isp are fine, as my flatmates both have steady connections (ones running XP the other Leopard). avast, ad-aware, and malwarebytes all come up clean- though i had some reported malware a week or so ago which adaware dealt with
i have however been trying to make my laaptop as fast as possible without overclocking it, so have been diabling startup services and other non-essental services that eat my precious ram and cpu power.
is it a common vista problem? or have i changed a setting or something thats making it do this?
i have read other threads with simmilar issues, but have not found anything that helps.

Rename A File Lose Track
Mar 26, 20091) Rename a file and you lose track of it due to the automatic sorting feature. In XP you controlled this behavior by hitting F5. Words cannot describe my frustration over this!
2) Quite often when you Alt+Tab to an Explorer window, the focus is gone and you must click the file area to be able to navigate with the keyboard.
3) The "Burn"-button and its friends cannot be removed. This is a travesty!

Aug 4, 2009I am finding my internet is slow, I open utorrent or vuse or a torrent program that uses bandwidth and I lose all internet browsing, msn messenger but skype stays online and the torrents download at a slower rate but still download.... as soon as i close any bandwidth sucking program the internet comes back but still a slower speed. i have adsl2+ so speed shouldnt be an issue
