Enabling Aero, The Graphics Get Sluggish?

Jun 12, 2006

I've just installed Beta 2 (5384) and I'm so far very happy with it. All of my hardware is fully functioning even with some of it using XP drivers. I've installed the nVidia drivers 88.61 for my Geforce 6800GT w/ 256MB RAM. After enabling Aero, the graphics are terribly sluggish. I can't drag a window without it jumping around. My resolution is 1680x1050. Is there something I'm missing? I've checked the supported GPU lists and there's tons of cards slower than mine that support Aero. Is this just a stupid list of what will "work" but not what will perform well?

Graphics Card Will Operate Aero Machine

Mar 23, 2008

having just upgraded to Vista, I now need to upgrade my Graphics card, so as Windows Aero will work. Now the problem, which one. I only want a standard AGP card that will operate Aero, as I do not use my PC. for games etc. It seems that all of the graphics card advertised, are over spec for my requirements. Is there a standard Generic card that will operate Aero on my machine.

Sluggish Performance In 64

Mar 4, 2009

I have been battling a problem with my new build for almost 3 months. My rig:

Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
Core2Quad Q6600
G.Skill DDR2-800 2x2GB
Geforce 6800 GT
PC&P Silencer 500W
WD Black 1 TB
Vista Home Premium 64-bit

My performance is terrible! This is my first experience with vista. My pc runs sluggishly, sims 2 game crashes at startup, my other 2 games (half life 2, left 4 dead) are very choppy and unplayable. Browsing playlist in iTunes with cover art displayed is choppy and slow (unusable, i have to turn the cover art off).

If I take out 1 of my sticks of RAM it seems fine. If i load XP, it seems fine, even with both sticks.

I have ran memtest on my ram, tried my ram in all the slots, ran prime 95 for hours with no errors, ran diagnostics on my hdds, rma'd my motherboard (they returned it saying nothing was wrong with it), purchased a new motherboard (asus p5q), tried 2 other kinds of RAM, updated all of my drivers, reinstalled vista a billion times, and NOTHING has worked.

The only thing left to replace is my cpu and before I go through that hassle, I just want to exhaust the last avenue, since the problem is only evident in vista with all my memory sticks installed.

Sluggish Cursor Movement

Jul 29, 2009

In another thread there was a discussion about spyware. I followed some of the advice given and now all of a sudden, the cursor movement is sluggish. Also, when I boot up, my password is sometimes rejected two or three times even though I am being careful in typing. Sometimes I have to click on a link three or four times before it works. My machine is a Packard Bell desktop with 32-bit OS Vista plus SP1.

One Reason For Sluggish Or Freezing Vista

Jun 28, 2009

Since latest microsoft updates last wednesday 23th June 09 vista kept freezing

I have tried using Windows 7 X64 instead vista x64 - it does not freeze but was going sluggish.

Now I run Desktop (intel i7 processor) which is powered by a Battery UPS system where the battery run the PC and the battery is charging when main power is on- this means if power drops or is lost i am already on battery power still at full voltage and amps.

In this respect i am the same as laptop which has a battery.

what does this mean?? Vista appear for some reason now to be throttling back my clock speed to as little as 5% due to its power management battery settings- that is instead of having an I7 @ 3.20 Ghz i am getting i7 @ 160Mhz

Solution @ (worked for me despite mention AMD processor here) ...

Sluggish Memory:performe Slow

Jan 13, 2010

I've noticed my system becoming pretty sluggish when running more than a couple of apps (internet explorer, the odd game etc). I'm running a Vista Home Premium set up with a Pentium Dual Core 3GHZ chip and 2GB RAM which should have (and previously did have) more than enough grunt.

When I look at Task Manager after startup (with little running) I can see that the Physical Memory utilisation is up at 70-75% and in the performance tab, I have approx 4MB free (and the usage history graph is up at approx 1.5GB). I'm very experienced with pc's so I know about Vista's superfetching etc, but the system is dog slow.

I've disabled everything that I don't need at start up (as well as some services which I won't use). I've run AVG virus scan, Spybot and AdAware repeatedly, along with CCleaner and Disk Defrag. Security Task manager doesn't show me anything suspicious either. I've uninstalled anything that I won't need, and still it's running incredibly slow. The windows experience score is still at 4.8, so in theory the system is sound. I can't see what's utilising all of this memory in the Processes so I'm stuck.

Laptop Display: Boot Into Aero About 50% Of The Time. The Rest Of The Time I Forced Onto The Standard Theme With No Aero Option

Mar 23, 2008

I've got an Sony VGN-BX197XP laptop that I've upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. Since then I've encountered some strange display-related issues:

1) I could only boot into Aero about 50% of the time. The rest of the time I forced onto the Standard theme with no Aero option. Since installing Vista SP1 I can't get Aero at all.

2) When not running in Aero mode I can't get the Windows Media Player to play video files, nor get a Perfomance Index.

3) If I plug in an external monitor I can't get a picture on the laptop monitor but I *do* get a picture on the external monitor and it runs Aero 100% of the time. It will also play video files and give me a performance index.

UAC Re-enabling Itself?

May 5, 2008

I turned off UAC on my parents' new computer a couple days ago. Yesterday, my dad encountered some spyware while browsing (he called me over and I noticed that Firefox had somehow gone to onlinexpscanner.com and downloaded a suspicious executable, and there was a prompt to run the program). I am now trying to figure out if any spyware got installed onto the computer. The first thing I have noticed is that UAC is now enabled, even though I had disabled it a couple days ago. How did that happen? Could any Windows updates have re-enabled it?

ENABLING Log On At Startup

Aug 20, 2009

I had my laptop out for repairs, and when I got it back they had enabled the auto log on at startup. I don't like this because that way anyone could get into my computer when they turn it on.

How do I DIS-able this? I've found plenty of sites that enables it, but I don't want it on. Undoing the checkmark in the place that does it on Vista doesn't seem to do the trick.

My video card was acting up so I decided to purchase a BFG GTX 275 896mb GDDR3 and picked up a 900w power supply. Then as I was installed it, I noticed that my PSU said something about being SLI ready and I looke up on to that. Can my computer dual run 2 different cards? An ASUS GTX 260 and a BFG GTX 275?

Re-enabling Hibernation After Disk Cleanup?

Jan 5, 2010

I know about powercfg -h on. It doesn't work. Disk cleanup deleted the hibernation file, now when I put that line in the command prompt it tells me: "Hibernation failed with the following error: Access is denied. The following items are preventing hibernation on this system. The system could not create the hibernation file. The specific error code is 0xc0000022."I am an admin account, running the cmd.exe as an admin. Doing this in safe mode produces a different error which I can post if you want (along the lines of a VGAsave). There are no options in the control panel remotely relating to hibernation. Is there any alternate way to enable hibernation or to get the powercfg tool to work as it is intended?

Also for Hardware Acceleration, i can not turn it on because i do not have the troubleshoot option in my display settings. My nero will not burn any dvd disc's due to that.

Enabling Windows Mail In Windows 7

Nov 9, 2008

Some people Running the Windows 7 Pre Beta 6801 have been asking about Windows Mail in Windows seven and where they can find it. The strange thing is it is there but it's hidden and doesn't do anything when you click on it, although you will see it in task manager, so if you do want Windows Mail this is what you have to do. First go to folder options and deselect hide protected operating system files and do not show hidden files, you will now be able to see the Windows Mail executable file which was previously hidden. Next go to your programs folder and Windows Mail folder and take Ownership of all the files in there, you will need to do this one file at a time and Don't Forget to Give Yourself FULL CONTROL of each file. Just in case there is another fix for this in the Future you may want to make a copy of this folder and keep it somewhere Once you have taken ownership and given yourself full control copy all your files from Vista's Windows Mail folder and paste and replace ALL of the files in Windows 7 Mail folder. That's it and DON'T try to click on the Original Hidden WinMail.exe file, if you do you will not be able to replace it, as it will run and you wont see anything but you will still need to kill the process in task manager.

Well, one of the first things he did to my laptop when I got it, was get rid Aero. At first I didn't mind, but now I want it back. And I mean its gone. When I go into "Window Color and Appearance" it doesn't even have the Aero option listed anymore.

How Do I Enable Aero?

May 15, 2010

I no longer have Aero theme enabled, and, I can't select it from the list. This has started after I had to format my drive and install Vista all over. Everything else with it seems just fine. Only this "Windows Vista Transparency" is not working. There is only one place I can think of to enable it at, and it is not there. Do I need to install some updates?

There should be another option there "Windows Vista Ultimate" I think, but I could be wrong.

But how do I enable transparency and all of the other effects of Aero?

Confused About Aero

Nov 5, 2007

I'm confused about the Aero Glass interface. Is the Aero Glass interface the same as the Aero color theme listed in display properties? If a person has Vista Home Premium and their computer's hardware supports it, does Vista default to Aero Glass or Aero Basic? The reason I ask is because when I first turned on my laptop, the windows were transparent and I could see the desktop through the borders when the windows were maximized. Was this Aero Glass? Does running Vista in Windows Classic Mode (where it looks like Win9x) save RAM and CPU cycles, or does it not make a difference as long as the hardware is strong enough to support Aero Glass?

Aero Disappearing

Sep 4, 2009

I have Nvidia 8800Gt Up-to-date Drivers 1tb Hd Runnign Vista Ulti 32 and i just applied a crap load of patches last night and then Sp2 about a hour ago. And now Aero disappeared, Checked Services and all that jazz, everything is running. Already redid my score. Every time i try a Theme the uses Aero i get Windows Classic. Along with SP2 Windows Poweshell was installed, could that be messing it up? I dont have anything but updates recently installed. no incompatibility programs. I heard that sometimes when u apply Service patches ur Serial can mess up and might need re-activation? Cuz i remember before i bought a Ultimate Serial after the time limit i couldn't use Aero. I upgraded from Basic to Ulti. So yea, Checked the services, did the score, checked reg, checked processes, and tried most of things suggested on the forums.
