Is there a way to stop compression? I know that for a fact that when you delete email after you have received them, they do not go away. Instead, they are merely stored in one file and then compressed. I would like to be able to delete and not just compress them in an ever bigger file. I don't know if this question has ever been asked before.
View 5 Repliesup until this week when i downloaded files were large, windows automatically compressed them, placing them in a folder with a zipper on it. all of a sudden it does not do that anymore. that part of vista is not working. my computer is a month old. i understand that this automatic compression is intrinsic to the vista system and may not have a file extension. how can i repair vista to get this feature back.

The Windows uploaded through BitTorrent when it was locked. The Windows Vista 64 does not hang if it has been locked less than 3 hours. View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter enduring the black screen and mouse pointer of death all morning with 4 system restores I have decided to go ahead with a back up/restore program (Acronis) outside of what came with the laptop (backup the backup). Presently I have several gigs of stuff I don't use but don't want to delete so would like to compress on one of my external drives. My goal is to, after packing my old stuff on my 125g Maxtor I'd like to create one image of the entire laptop drive, programs, files etc, then back up the My Documents folder and pics as they are changed on my 1T WD Book.
Herein lies the rub, I have downloaded 7Zip and have begun compressing some files. It was a crap shoot due to my having zero knowledge of what each of the settings mean and how to set them to get the most out of the 2 hrs it takes to do the compression. Dictionary size? Solid block size? Number of CPU threads? Word size? I went ahead with what they recommended (normal) but was not seeming to save any space so I stopped and tried Ultra. I understand this is a powerful piece of software but where can I find information on all this. I have searched this forum and the 7Zip forum (which is a post-apocalyptic waste land of unanswered posts), Google presented nothing. (When I searched for 'what is "solid block size"' I found "solid block size dictates the size of your solid block" LOL)......
I've disabled this on other systems without a problem, but I have one that I cannot disable it on. In fact I can't seem to be able to change anything in 'Turn Windows features on/off'.
Vista Home Premium 32bit, I have administrator rights, UAC is turned off, and I have tried it in both normal mode and safe mode. It looks like it's working, then just tells me that 'An error has occured, and not all features could be changed'. Doesn't matter what option I try to change (enable/disable).
I've asked this in a couple other forums over the last couple of weeks with no response (except to tell me I need to be an administrator). Just wondered if anyone else has come across this.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate and just compressed several large directories on Outlook 2007 and under my Documents directory in Explorer. After the compression was done, the amount of free space was less than before. Why did this happen? Is there a trick to using compression, or a better way to free up space?

As I can't run the 64 bit upgrade from 32 bit XP I need to make a bootable cd from Microsoft give no information regarding installation. From searching the web I am lead to believe there is no way to make a bootable dvd from these files.

This did not stop the error so I looked a little deeper and the issue appears to be that IE7 is not caching anything at all - at least, the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is empty.
This leads me to consider a permissions problem, more so as I have moved the Temp Internet folder to another partition. I have set the permissions on the drive and parent folder to give "everyone" full control. This has not resolved the problem. Some files have appeared which I think have come from Windows Media Player but websites are not showing up, not even cookies. rss.xml files have also shown up after a reboot from sidebar news gadget (even though it's not running?!).....

Compact the database on shutdown every [50] runs is reached and if I say yes to the question if WinMail should compact the message store, it always crashes and after a restart it asks again to compact, but the counter is set to 50. Something goes wrong and I don't want to use "Clean up now" because I don't want to loose all my posts, etc. What can I do to successful compact my MailStore?
When you download a new gadget, where does Vista store the files? I want to insure when I deleted a few gadgets that I downloaded, all of the files are gone.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI applied this to fix the missing clear recent list problem in start menu: "Clear Recent Items List" option missing when you right-click on the Recent folder However, the problem returns frequently and the option is missing again. I also have this other problem where every time I reboot, the "store and display recently opened files" is unchecked and therefore the feature does not show up in the start menu. I have to re-check it everytime after a reboot. This is very annoying. Note: this problem was always happening prior to installing both Wise software. Also, I have always used CCleaner without such problems, for over 2 years. On a side note, it seems the problem *may* have started around the time I installed SP1.

I _*HAD,*_ until last week, a similar numbers of sub-folders under Windows Mail *Sent*, such as "To NatWest 09" or "To Family & Friends 09". All the *Sent* file folders have now disappeared. I have accessed Tools, Options,Advanced, Maintenance, Store Folder, Store Location and Change, but cannot find any of the Sent folders anywhere. I recently started the Volulme Shadow copy, which was stopped, & set it to manual; later I tried automatic, but none of that seems to work. Still no restore points kept for longer than three days.
I`m not dual booting with windows XP, & this is the amount of space allocated to restore points:
Used shadow copy storage space: 924.293 MB
Allocated shadow copy storage space: 1.172 GB
Maximum shadow copy storage space: 4.434 GB
I don`t use diskeeper defragmenting tool at all, I use the disk clean up & defragmenter that came with windows vista. I do have Ccleaner, which has a disk cleaner & registry cleaner. I practically don`t use the registry cleaner, & sometimes I use the disk cleaner, but I haven`t used it at all for the last couple of months, & the problem persists. I use as well: Spybot-search & destroy; Ad-aware & my antivirus, which is Mc Afee, does defragment & clean up on a schedule.
I used to have the Norton Antivirus for three months last year, but not anymore, but I realized yesterday that I still haven`t uninstall the Symantec liveUpdate. I don`t have any other Symantec products running on my laptop.
I bought Ultimate w/SP-1 OEM 64 bit. I currently have Home Premium 64 bit. Can I just install Ultimate on top of Home Premium---or should I uninstall it? If I uninstall Home ver during installation of Ultimate, why would I need to keep the recovery copy of Home ver on "D" that came with the computer?
Shouldn't I get rid it and free up that partition for other use... then just make a complete computer recovery copy and store it on the USB external drive? I like what I have read a litte about the Maxtor One Touch backup--- but have never used it. I presume it will do a complete computer back up?
I wish to store my emails on a secure virtual drive I have created on my laptop. When I attempt this in Tools/Options/Maintainance/Store Location the window will only allow me to store the files on my main disk drives (C & D) how can I bypass this and store them to a secure drive?

I installed Vista Ultimate 32bit on a 2nd partition and tried using Windows Easy Transfer to transfer files and settings from the 64bit installation and pick them up in the 32bit installaion. This is the error I get every time I try to complete the transfer: "The store you selected was saved on a 64bit machine. Windows Easy Transfer cannot apply the data." Is there a way to use WET to transfer files from a Vista-64bit installation? If not WET, is there another utility?

Recently started using vista on a new computer. When receiving email in vista mail I cannot open attachments with .pps file. It will open if I save it. The file extension is correct in the directory for vista to open it. I noticed a similar problem in the forum for .doc files but the fix for that did not seem to address the .pps files.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two versions of Eudora on my PC but only one (Eudora 8 beta) is recognized in file folders that contain *.jpg files (as of today).
Before today, I would highlight a JPG and click on Email at the top of the open folder. Eudora 7.1 would come up and all I had to do was put in an email address. I should say that I use Eudora 7.1 with two sets of data - one for me and one for my wife.
However, my wife's version would come up which is what I want. As of today, Eudora 8 beta comes up when I click on Email. I have no idea how the association changed.
I also don't know why my wife's version of Eudora 7.1 used to come up instead of mine.
There must be a way to reset the association. I tried resetting the association in Internet Explorer - but only Eudora 8 beta is available as a choice. That's another problem. Why isn't Eudora 7.1 a choice in file associations in Internet Explorer 8?
I have Vista on my new computer and my husband recently added a signature to his email file at work with a logo. I can no longer see his text in the emails he sends to me. I also cannot type anything in the email created when replying to these messages. I should note that he has Vista at work also on some of their computers including the one he uses and he has none of these issues. Is there a setting I need to change? I've searched the internet along with this site for a solution and haven't seen this particular problem. If need be I can send the email property details to show you. When I got to properties of the email and show the details, it shows the message included in 'part 1' of the message.
