Compact Message Store FAILS

Feb 25, 2009

I'm using Windows Mail of Win Vista Business SP1. as my default mail-Client and Newsreader, but I have some trouble if my Windows Mail try to compact the message store. When the counter under:

Tools->Options->Advanced->Maintenance->

Compact the database on shutdown every [50] runs is reached and if I say yes to the question if WinMail should compact the message store, it always crashes and after a restart it asks again to compact, but the counter is set to 50. Something goes wrong and I don't want to use "Clean up now" because I don't want to loose all my posts, etc. What can I do to successful compact my MailStore?

Windows Mail: Compact The Files

Mar 9, 2009

Windows mail keeps trying to compact the the files when I close the program. It keeps trying and I get errors. How is this fixed? It's the most annoying thing as it doesn't quit, if I click OK - I get another error. How do I get it to compact the news/mail files? Never had this problem with OE I used this to compact and repair the database - it said it compressed it, but did not. WMail is still trying to compess the data base every time I close the program. How is this fixed once and for all? I'm also getting a little window pop up from the bottom bar saying "Data Execution Prevention closed Windows?" What the hell is "Data Execution Prevention?"

64 Download From Microsoft Store

Mar 28, 2009

I am running win xp 32 and downloaded vista 64 from the microsoft store. I have 3 files, Vista_HomePremium_SP1_64bit_English_Upgrade_Download_Part1_66I-01937.exe install.wim boot.wim. running the .exe file creates and populates a folder called 'Vista' then results in the following error

Windows Vista Setup Preparation. Can not extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded. For product support return to your Digital Locker and view Purchase History to click on the support link for Windows Vista.

As I can't run the 64 bit upgrade from 32 bit XP I need to make a bootable cd from Microsoft give no information regarding installation. From searching the web I am lead to believe there is no way to make a bootable dvd from these files.

IE7 Will Not Cache Pages Or Store Cookies

May 15, 2008

The other day gmail started complaining that my cache was full so I cleared it and increased the size to 1024MB. This did not stop the error so I looked a little deeper and the issue appears to be that IE7 is not caching anything at all - at least, the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is empty.

This leads me to consider a permissions problem, more so as I have moved the Temp Internet folder to another partition. I have set the permissions on the drive and parent folder to give "everyone" full control. This has not resolved the problem. Some files have appeared which I think have come from Windows Media Player but websites are not showing up, not even cookies. rss.xml files have also shown up after a reboot from sidebar news gadget (even though it's not running?!).....

Email Store File Compression

Feb 4, 2010

Is there a way to stop compression? I know that for a fact that when you delete email after you have received them, they do not go away. Instead, they are merely stored in one file and then compressed. I would like to be able to delete and not just compress them in an ever bigger file. I don't know if this question has ever been asked before.

Store And Display Recently Opened Files

Jul 1, 2008

I applied this to fix the missing clear recent list problem in start menu: "Clear Recent Items List" option missing when you right-click on the Recent folder However, the problem returns frequently and the option is missing again. I also have this other problem where every time I reboot, the "store and display recently opened files" is unchecked and therefore the feature does not show up in the start menu. I have to re-check it everytime after a reboot. This is very annoying. Note: this problem was always happening prior to installing both Wise software. Also, I have always used CCleaner without such problems, for over 2 years. On a side note, it seems the problem *may* have started around the time I installed SP1.

System Restore Doesn`t Keep Store Points For Long

Jul 1, 2009

My ASUS laptop is nearly a year old & running Vista home premium, but it`s never kept restore points for longer than two or three days.

I recently started the Volulme Shadow copy, which was stopped, & set it to manual; later I tried automatic, but none of that seems to work. Still no restore points kept for longer than three days.

I`m not dual booting with windows XP, & this is the amount of space allocated to restore points:

Used shadow copy storage space: 924.293 MB

Allocated shadow copy storage space: 1.172 GB

Maximum shadow copy storage space: 4.434 GB

I don`t use diskeeper defragmenting tool at all, I use the disk clean up & defragmenter that came with windows vista. I do have Ccleaner, which has a disk cleaner & registry cleaner. I practically don`t use the registry cleaner, & sometimes I use the disk cleaner, but I haven`t used it at all for the last couple of months, & the problem persists. I use as well: Spybot-search & destroy; Ad-aware & my antivirus, which is Mc Afee, does defragment & clean up on a schedule.

I used to have the Norton Antivirus for three months last year, but not anymore, but I realized yesterday that I still haven`t uninstall the Symantec liveUpdate. I don`t have any other Symantec products running on my laptop.

Regarding Installation: Recovery Copy And Store In The USB External Drive?

Jul 2, 2009

I bought Ultimate w/SP-1 OEM 64 bit. I currently have Home Premium 64 bit. Can I just install Ultimate on top of Home Premium---or should I uninstall it? If I uninstall Home ver during installation of Ultimate, why would I need to keep the recovery copy of Home ver on "D" that came with the computer?

Shouldn't I get rid it and free up that partition for other use... then just make a complete computer recovery copy and store it on the USB external drive? I like what I have read a litte about the Maxtor One Touch backup--- but have never used it. I presume it will do a complete computer back up?

Fails To Boot

Apr 8, 2010

When I try to boot windows I get the black Windows Error Recovery screen with the options to Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally. If I select start windows normally the systems quickly restarts and takes me right back to that screen. If I select Startup Repair, I get the blue screen of death, "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". Even trying to use the boot options, launching startup repair still gets the blue screen, safe mode still just restarts and takes me back to the beginning. All of this started sometime last night when the computer must have installed updates and then tried to restart itself because I walked out this morning to the blue screen. Any suggestions? I do not have any sort of disk for the computer, its an HP. I am writing this from another computer, as I obviously cannot make the problem computer start at all.
