View 7 RepliesCan the compression of the drive c: cause a hang of Windows Vista 64 when I try to unlock Windows Vista 64 in about 8 hours of its being locked? The Windows uploaded through BitTorrent when it was locked. The Windows Vista 64 does not hang if it has been locked less than 3 hours. The Windows Vista 64 did not hang before I compressed the drive c: to save disk space.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter enduring the black screen and mouse pointer of death all morning with 4 system restores I have decided to go ahead with a back up/restore program (Acronis) outside of what came with the laptop (backup the backup). Presently I have several gigs of stuff I don't use but don't want to delete so would like to compress on one of my external drives. My goal is to, after packing my old stuff on my 125g Maxtor I'd like to create one image of the entire laptop drive, programs, files etc, then back up the My Documents folder and pics as they are changed on my 1T WD Book.
Herein lies the rub, I have downloaded 7Zip and have begun compressing some files. It was a crap shoot due to my having zero knowledge of what each of the settings mean and how to set them to get the most out of the 2 hrs it takes to do the compression. Dictionary size? Solid block size? Number of CPU threads? Word size? I went ahead with what they recommended (normal) but was not seeming to save any space so I stopped and tried Ultra. I understand this is a powerful piece of software but where can I find information on all this. I have searched this forum and the 7Zip forum (which is a post-apocalyptic waste land of unanswered posts), Google presented nothing. (When I searched for 'what is "solid block size"' I found "solid block size dictates the size of your solid block" LOL)......
I've disabled this on other systems without a problem, but I have one that I cannot disable it on. In fact I can't seem to be able to change anything in 'Turn Windows features on/off'.
Vista Home Premium 32bit, I have administrator rights, UAC is turned off, and I have tried it in both normal mode and safe mode. It looks like it's working, then just tells me that 'An error has occured, and not all features could be changed'. Doesn't matter what option I try to change (enable/disable).
I've asked this in a couple other forums over the last couple of weeks with no response (except to tell me I need to be an administrator). Just wondered if anyone else has come across this.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate and just compressed several large directories on Outlook 2007 and under my Documents directory in Explorer. After the compression was done, the amount of free space was less than before. Why did this happen? Is there a trick to using compression, or a better way to free up space?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to stop compression? I know that for a fact that when you delete email after you have received them, they do not go away. Instead, they are merely stored in one file and then compressed. I would like to be able to delete and not just compress them in an ever bigger file. I don't know if this question has ever been asked before.
View 5 Replies View Relatedup until this week when i downloaded files were large, windows automatically compressed them, placing them in a folder with a zipper on it. all of a sudden it does not do that anymore. that part of vista is not working. my computer is a month old. i understand that this automatic compression is intrinsic to the vista system and may not have a file extension. how can i repair vista to get this feature back.

I looked on the control panal to uninstall it, didn't show up, so i went through and deleted all the files pertaining to the program. now, there is an icon on my tool bar that i can't click on and it blocks some of my stuff, like when i try opening a movie, saying the the "Application cannot be executed. The file is infected. Please activate your antivirus software." i ran a virus scan, got nothing. I even tried a full restore, since i just got this computer monday, and it was still there.

I did a search for "x86" on these forums and did not find anything. So, I'd like to ask a few quick question to Brink or anyone else that might know.
This is my first computer with a 64-bit OS (Vista Home Premium). I noticed that there are two separate "Program Files" directories off of root C:
a "Program Files" directory a "Program Files (x86)" directory Is there a difference between the two directories that we should know about?
Also, I've been installing programs to "Program Files (x86)." The programs I've been installing are not necessary 64-bit programs. Should I be installing programs to the "Program Files" directory, instead?
I have Vista Ultimate I have installed UPS softare to manage the shout down of my PC but Windows has blocked it from starting.
When I click on "show blocked programs" the blocked program is shown but when I highlight it, the option to "Allow" is grayed out.
How do I get Windows to allow the program to run, I have tried setting the exe file to "Run as administrator" but it did not work.
I read the "answer" post about UAC, and was wondering why when I set something to "run as administrator" in it's Properties it does not do so on an Administrator account? On the Guest account I have set up the program runs without asking for any kind of verification or admin password, but it always asks for such when run from the administrator account. What has gone wrong here? Is there some way to make a program "trusted" (like all Microsoft products) so that it doesn't ever need verification for all accounts on a system?

1. I have a couple programs that every time I go to start them I get "A program needs your permission to continue"I have to click "continue" so they will run.

How do I get the shields to go away?
How do I get the "need permission" message to stop coming up?
I recently got updates and now my IE 8 keeps locking me out of websites that I regulary visit, say DEP has closed the program. I am a novice at the computer It also shuts down when I use other Internet programs like firefox.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is my first post in this forum. I use Vista Home premium. my DEP setting is Turn on for all programs except those I select. My querry is-Whenever I go to the folder of a program in "Program Files" folder, I notice that it has numerous folders, and each of these folders have numerous .exe files. Moreover, it is not possible to "Batch Select" all the .exe files in a folder, the procedure has to be repeated for each .exe file individually. This is cumbersome. Is there a better
way of doing it?
So I was spending way too much time on facebook and way too much time gaming when I needed to study for a chem test today so I thought it would be a good idea to somehow enable parental controls to only give me 30 mins a day on facebook and an reasonable amount of time on the computer game. I was going to get my roomate to type the password. After I went to parental controls I quickly realized that I could not micro manage the parental controls the way I wanted to because vista sucks.
So I downloaded "USER TIME CONTROL CENTER v 4.9.2.7" from "http://www.1securitycenter.com/index.html" and installed it. Then I realized I did not like the program because when I ran it it did not allow me to use any kind of administrative commands. It took me awile to figure out how to disable it but when I did I was able to uninstall it. The computer rebooted and then I quickly deleted it from out of my recycling bin only to find out that I still can not run administrative commands.
So now I:
1. Do not have the program
2. Can not reinstall the program
3. Can not restore program
4. Can not use any kind of 'run as administrator' (No error message, it tells me to type password but it wont let me imput)
Think that the problem is related to:
1. Csrss.exe
2. Csrstub.exe
And I dont know how to: Access User:administrator
Haven't been able to download a program off the net since. Says my current security settings won't allow. Have tried putting sites in trusted zone(lowest security setting), allowed cookies, turned off protected mode. Nothing seems to work. Tried to get firefox. won't let me. Also is there any way to shut off all the warnings at the top of the page. They are more annoying than the popups. I don't need a babysitter, I need a web browser. btw, vista 32 premium
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who just got a new PC with Vista Home Basic. He's using an old DOS program that worked under XP, but doesn't appear to work properly in Vista. When I execute the program, it comes up with the error message "This system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." My choices then are "Close" or "Ignore". Whichever option I click on, the program will then run, but in a miniscule window that I can't alter.
Any ideas on how to get this to run in fullscreen like it did before? I'm working on getting him to join the 21st century, but in the interim, I'd like to make this work...at least temporarily.
First: I'm thinking of getting a second HD and I want to leave the OS on the main HD and move / transfer all my programs like office, World of Warcraft, DVD programs etc. Is this possible or will it cause a conflict? Is there a good way to do this?
Secondly: I had to use the Vista Upgrade option on this disk to correctly fix some of my files which had been deleted by a poor vista update, namely system restore and windows update. Now I get rnadom IRQ errors and USB Port errors which crash the computer. I have updated to SP1 on Home Premium x 64 bit what could be cuasing this problem?
