I am trying to network 2 Dell Pc's Desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium. Laptop running Windows XP Home. On the desktop i can see the Laptop. But on the Laptop i don't see the Desktop. How can i see the desktop on the Laptop ?
View 4 RepliesI am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine. I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator." I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe computer had been infected by some malicious software and it did not boot at all. After some tinkering I managed to get into safe mode and run MBAM. The computer eventually booted, but had no desktop. I went into the Task manager and saw that there was no Explorer process, so I started it and al was well. I then booted from the OS disc included with the PC, got into the repair screen that had sustem restore and restored the PC to a date before it got infected. This worked well and now the PC boot into Vista without any problems. I ran an antivirus and MBAM and neither detected any malware.
I thought all was well until I tried to connect to the Internet. I have cable service, a modem connected to a router and the PCs connected to the router. The Vista installation would not see anything out there, I tinkered and managed to get a message that said that there was "limited connectivity available". I figured that the LAN card's driver had been corrupted so I downloaded the driver and installed it. The installation was successful, but the problem persisted. I then went into Dev. manager and went into the card's properties. The status comment indicated that the device was working correctly. I noticed that there was another LAN device under the Network. It was the MS 6to 4 Adapter and there was anexclamation point next to it. I went into its properties and the remark indicated code 31.
My friend bent down to pick something up that was near my desktop computer and there shoulder hit it. I t wobbled back and forth. Is that very bad for the computer? The computer was ON
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a new HP pavilion laptop. I'm trying to log into my work system remotely. The error I'm getting is "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Remote desktop cannot find the remote computer. Type the computer name or IP address again, and then try connecting" I've tried the help desk at work, they say they know there has been issues with people loggin in with Vista, but its been resolved. But they have not actually been able to help me log in. They are running Windows NT.

The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. "This computer can't connect to the remote computer."
when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.
I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have rebooted my Laptop normally, I logged into Windows Vista and i was surprised by having the Desktop background disappeared along with it's Icons. The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. I Can't right click on the desktop, and when i move the cursor inside it, it's still "loading" for ever.
View 8 Replies View RelatedBefore the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"
Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........
Two instances of desktop.ini have appeared on my desktop. What are they for and can they be deleted? I've also seen thumbs.ini in other folders.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was working on the computer today using several programs and when I went back to the desktop, I noticed a sort of ghosted out icon that looks like a gear on top of a sheet of lined paper and the words "desktop.ini" under it. I have no idea how it got there. Is it safe for me to delete it or is there a better way of getting rid of it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? Using both methods, I was able to import my contacts into my second computer but they weren't neatly organized in files: i.e. business contacts, personal contacts, family, etc. Is there a way to export my contacts so they are still in the correct files and are neatly organized?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Laptop that needs to access a printer on an XP computer in my sister's law office. I'm having trouble trying to even have the XP computer show up consistently on my sister's computer. I can ping it every time from the command prompt. I have all firewalls unenabled on both computers. Identical user accounts on both systems. File and Print sharing set up on both. The Link Layer topology is present on the Vista computer. When the laptop sits for a while the XP computer will show up on the map; but, Vista comes up with an error message when I try to access the XP computer.
Beyond that, the map will lose the XP computer on occassion. The Vista computer can access the internet well enough through the router. At this point I can't install the printer on the Vista computer for not being able to access the XP computer from Vista. I've networked Vista computers before on XP networks, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Additional info; net view will not show xp computer. Workgroup name is the same for both XP and Vista computer. The restrict anonymous registry key on the XP computer is set at 1. Was originally set at 0. (Norton's Systemwork altered setting)
I have a problem: I have a Windows 7 computer that is part of a Domain. By using System Restore, Windows has managed to ruin the trust relationship with the domain. I use a domain logon and am the only administrator on the machine (the Local Administrator is disabled). I cannot log in normally, due to the trust relationship issue. If I disconnect the network cable while logging in, I can (cached credentials), however I cannot change any UAC-protected settings because if I enter my credentials into it, connected to the network or not, UAC will simply show an error "This operation requires elevation". Nothing I try will work.
I cannot disjoin the domain, because those controls are protected by UAC. Logging in from a remote machine using my credentials will give me "Access is denied". Resetting the computer account in AD has no effect. I cannot format and reinstall because this laptop does not boot from CD by default and requires me to install a program to change BIOS settings (don't ask, it's a Toshiba, the usual way is broken). I cannot install this program because I am faced with yet another UAC prompt. I cannot remove the harddrive because of the laptop's design. how to salvage this computer?
I have been searching far and wide for a solution to my networking problem. I have 2 computers that i connect directly to each other by ethernet cable. Both computers also connect to the internet via wifi. So, on each computer, I have my Wireless connection, and the 'unidentified network' link between the two computers. The problem is that the 'unidentified network' settings never save, so when ever i restart either of the computers, I have to make the unidentified network private again, and there is no way that i can see to actually save the unidentified network settings in a profile. Also, to prevent the computer to computer connection from broadcasting over the wifi connection, i have to disconnect the wireless from one of the computers. I have tried making the wifi a public network and the ethernet connection private, but it never seems to work. anyone out there know what i can do?

I was just uninstalling some program when I realized that my desktop all of a sudden became empty! I had nearly 6 GB of data on there, including my pictures, and it's all f***ing GONE!
There goes all my pictures, pics of my birthdays, girlfriends, family, etc. This is truly something that has prompted me to f***ing dump this piece of garbage into a trash can and get myself a Mac (I'll let the Apple guys conveniently transfer my files to my new Mac and then I'll dump this piece of junk). Yea, if you don't like this kind of posts on a Microsoft forum then you guys at MS better start thinking about the garbage you're putting out.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSome months back I installed Vista 32-bit Home Premium in C: partition. When W7 came out, I installed W7 Ultimate 64-bit in D: as a dual boot. Now I want to keep Vista, but use W7 as the main OS I am going to build on from here on out, so I want it at the front of the hard disk in C: (where it will run faster) and my secondary or experimental OS in D: (Vista).
So I backed up Vista to an external drive, booted from a CD (DriveImage XML BartPE) and restored the Vista image to D: ... then reinstalled W7 in C:.
When I booted after re-installing W7, the multi-boot menu listed Windows 7 twice, instead of Windows 7 and Vista, which I kind of expected, because W7 *had* been in D: and now it was in C: "too." I used Easy BCDEdit to correct the text.
Now the machine boots into W7 fine, but when I try to boot to Vista, I get the usual logo, then the Welcome screen, which lasts a bit longer than it would if nothing was hooey... then I get a cursor (responsive) and a black (empty) desktop.
I used Ctl Atl Del to access Task Mgr, and tried clicking the New Task button and entering explorer.exe, but it is looking at my C: drive for explorer, rather than where it SHOULD be looking in D:, because a funky, unstable, nonfunctional W7 desktop finally came up INSIDE VISTA!! (mind you, W7 is 64-bit!)
I shut down and tried booting into safe mode.... Got the same result of a black screen, and tried entering D:windowsexplorer.exe but got the same error message:
"...ieframe.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error..."
..and again the W7 desktop "tried" to come up.
I suspect it's looking in W7's folder (C:) because the backup image I made of Vista probably contains the original MBR, which mapped Vista to C:. I was hoping when I re-installed W7 to C: with the restored VISTA image already in D: that W7 would create a correct MBR... and it did, I think, but it left the old MBR at the beginning of the D:drive TOO... so when I boot to D:, the MBR record [ON D:] is telling VISTA it is in C:!! Hence Vista goes pokin around in my W7 (C:|) directory.
I downloaded the bootable Vista Recovery CD but it didn't find any problems, and I believe that's because VISTA isn't the problem... the MBR on D: is!
I don't want to have to rebuild the Vista OS... just need to remove the incorrect (old) MBR from the beginning of the D: drive... Can I do that?? Can I test this theory by somehow reading the first sector of that drive?
My desktop icons are not working correctly the applications are working fine but the icons are all the same attached is a jpeg of what it looks like as it is hard to explain the problem.

As you see in the screenshot, the icon for my documents folder is not the icon i want to have.
So i wanted to change it in the "Desktopsymboleigenschaften", but there are no icons, which i could change.
Looked on this site yesterday as I had frozen icons on my desktop, very helpful advice to go to taskmanager and end process. Since then I have not been able to send and recieve emails, does anyone know if this is something to do with the frozen icon situation?

I’m at a loss this problem started small freezing every once and while(I leave my computer on all the time) now I can’t get more then a minute or 2 into the desktop.

while surfing online i was looking into some language converter tools when my system hanged.. i manually shut down the system by holding the power button.. But since then on starting, my desktop and taskbar have disappeared.. however m able to access everything from task manager..
I looked onto 1 of the treads which had the solution to such a problem and changed the value of shell in the registry to explorer.exe.. However even then my desktop is not appearing on start up .. Only when i start a new process from task manager "explorer.exe", then my desktop appears..
