Looked on this site yesterday as I had frozen icons on my desktop, very helpful advice to go to taskmanager and end process. Since then I have not been able to send and recieve emails, does anyone know if this is something to do with the frozen icon situation?
View 9 RepliesI just recently bought the game and installed it, when I went to go run it my entire computer locks up and has to be hard booted. Looking on forums I ran it as administrator and also in Windows XP SP2 compatibly mode. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem and my computer still locks up and requires a hard boot. I do not even get into the game before this happens. The screen stays at the desktop frozen. Another program I have also mimics this, Autodesk Inventor. Not sure if they are related but my teacher said that Vista 64bit seems to always be the problem. I would like to get both of these programs running, especially Battlefield 2142, but my computer seems to be fighting me. Many other games work, it is the deluxe edition, patched till 1.50.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter I close Internet Explorer my desktop Icon's become frozen. The tool bar and start menu work fine. I'm running Windows Vista with IE8. I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials, have used SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as my malware removal tools. I've used system restore and still having the same problem. I don't have a recovery disk, just the disk that Dell issues with it's new computers.

View 4 Replies View Relatedafter installing my Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne on my Windows 7 beta, 7000build. I can run War3.exe after the installation. When I restarted my computer, the problem starts here. very time I open my War3, It minimizes on my task bar. When I click it again, it maximizes for around 1 second then minimizes again. I know its running fine because I can hear the sounds of the program and I can see the menu for 1 second. I search the internet for similar problem but it looks like I'm the only one having this kind of problem. I tried Updating my Video Card driver, I think I have the latest. Reinstalling my War3, it works. But, whenever I restart my computer, the problem appear again. I need to shutdown my computer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Microsoft's Screen Recorder on Vista Home Premium with SP1 & 2 and this is my second try. I created a new folder on my desktop and labeled it Screen Recorder download. I downloaded the UtilityOnlineMarch092009 03.exe file to my desktop. I clicked on it and selected to save it to this new folder I created.
There are 3 files: Screen Recorder, setup and WMEncoder. It is my understanding the encoder has to be installed first so I clicked on that. The install box opens and seems to run right along. The fills with green as it installs and according to that the install should be done and I should click Next. But above it says "Installing Windows Media runtime files ..." and there it sit frozen. It's been that way now for 20 minutes.
If I go to C/Program Files there is a folder called Windows Media Components and within that a file called Encoder and it is full of files. I have attached screen shots of the encoder downloade box that is frozen and of the files appearing in my C drive in that encoder folder.
Every now and again, a strange thing happenes to my start bar. It completely freezes, and I can't click anything on there apart from the start button. I can't select any tabs, or use the system tray. If that doesn't happen, sometimes the Start button decides to freeze instead. Basically it goes dark (like it does when it has been pressed) and then it stays like that and it won't let me open it.

1) I can still use external mouse
2) I saw in similar post somebody suggested using memory tool scan from microsoft. I did find that but when I clicked on it the owner was not microsoft but some other name. I am tired of downloding stuff on my computer and find out later that they are spyware etc..
3) I purchased Norton 360 which does not help
4) I ran system restore, did not help. First when I ran system restore it gave me error message "unspecified error during system restore" I ran it in safemode and now I could restore. Then I had to do the updates again. Rebooted toshiba laptop agai and the cursor still frozen
I recently built a computer with Vista Ultimate 64bit. I absolutley love it and have only had two problems. LOCKED UP Randomly the computer will just lock up. No graphical glitching, no errors, no nothing. In fact if you just came in the room and looked at the screen everything would appear normal. This happens when doing any manner of things. It has happened when playing games, surfing the net, working on a document or even when the computer is left on overnight.
Its very sporatic too. I have gone a whole week without it happening with turning the computer on and off. I have also had it happen a few times within a few hours. Sometimes I can leave the computer on for a few days and it wont happen, sometimes it will happen right after I have signed in..............

My system is now "frozen". On the screen is my two ientities. The mouse pointer is located midway between them and WILL NOT move. I downloaded a NVIDIA update last nigth that may be the culprit, but I cannot do anything because the computer is frozen. There is a round blue icon lower left of the screen the looks like a blue clock. I am not sure it was there before. The mouse is not wireless, teh light is on in the mouse, it is just as if the buttons do not work.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi was loading a new windows biz. unto a frozen windows vista basic machine. i could nt do any back up disc cos it does nt start up. after about 2 hrs of loading files to the computer there comes an error message that the system can't load the files. now am trying 2 get back to my old frozen state but does stop from booting over and over again. i must say that i only chose the option to push the files n stuff to windows.old so i could go catch it in a second moment but now i dont even get the chance to start it up at all.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was watching a programme online and noticed my other open windows seemed to have frozen (the cursor was doing the busy rotating "o" symbol and when I attempted to bring up the other windows nothing happened). Ultimately even the window I had open froze so I tried CTRL-ALT-DELETE to open Task Manager. Nothing happened. I turned off my laptop and turned it back on. I selected "Start Windows Normally" and got as far as the Microsoft Corporation page with the loading bar...but the Windows logo never appeared. After about 10 mins I freaked out and turned off my laptop again. Tried turning it on again, was given the option of Startup Repair. Chose this option, but still ended up at the Microsoft Corporation page with a futile loading bar as if nothing had happened. Any ideas what's wrong? Have tried selecting Vista as operating system from Setup Menu, but still nada.
View 8 Replies View RelatedEverytime I return to work after putting computer to sleep, the computer wakes up without no problem. But once I move the mouse, a shadowed box appeared. With the moment of the mouse, the size of that box enlarges or shrinks. If I click on the mouse, that box disappeared but then a window [View/Sort by/Refresh/NVIDIA Control Panel/New/Personalize] opens. I close this window, only to find the pointer of mouse stop working and the screen is frozen. For now I solve the problem by two ways described below, but it is very annoying to have to do it everytime I return to work from Sleep.
1.I open Task Manager, do nothing, and close it.
2.I right click the mouse on desktop, change the size of Icons. Repeat this action one more time.
apon using windows update, it froze around update 25, and windows modules installer stopped working. Now i have a issue with the windows licensing service, one second my windows is legit, the next it isnt, the next windows licensing stops working. The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. "This computer can't connect to the remote computer."
when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.
I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have rebooted my Laptop normally, I logged into Windows Vista and i was surprised by having the Desktop background disappeared along with it's Icons. The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. I Can't right click on the desktop, and when i move the cursor inside it, it's still "loading" for ever.

I have no idea how it got there. Is it safe for me to delete it or is there a better way of getting rid of it.

But....the picture I want to be there all the time, appears -but only for a few secs- when I'm closing down the PC!
I was just uninstalling some program when I realized that my desktop all of a sudden became empty! I had nearly 6 GB of data on there, including my pictures, and it's all f***ing GONE!
There goes all my pictures, pics of my birthdays, girlfriends, family, etc. This is truly something that has prompted me to f***ing dump this piece of garbage into a trash can and get myself a Mac (I'll let the Apple guys conveniently transfer my files to my new Mac and then I'll dump this piece of junk). Yea, if you don't like this kind of posts on a Microsoft forum then you guys at MS better start thinking about the garbage you're putting out.
I've disabled indexing and tried quite a few desktop search programs. Right now I'm running a trial of Popusoft Instant Filefind. Which desktop search app if any do you use?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSome months back I installed Vista 32-bit Home Premium in C: partition. When W7 came out, I installed W7 Ultimate 64-bit in D: as a dual boot. Now I want to keep Vista, but use W7 as the main OS I am going to build on from here on out, so I want it at the front of the hard disk in C: (where it will run faster) and my secondary or experimental OS in D: (Vista).
So I backed up Vista to an external drive, booted from a CD (DriveImage XML BartPE) and restored the Vista image to D: ... then reinstalled W7 in C:.
When I booted after re-installing W7, the multi-boot menu listed Windows 7 twice, instead of Windows 7 and Vista, which I kind of expected, because W7 *had* been in D: and now it was in C: "too." I used Easy BCDEdit to correct the text.
Now the machine boots into W7 fine, but when I try to boot to Vista, I get the usual logo, then the Welcome screen, which lasts a bit longer than it would if nothing was hooey... then I get a cursor (responsive) and a black (empty) desktop.
I used Ctl Atl Del to access Task Mgr, and tried clicking the New Task button and entering explorer.exe, but it is looking at my C: drive for explorer, rather than where it SHOULD be looking in D:, because a funky, unstable, nonfunctional W7 desktop finally came up INSIDE VISTA!! (mind you, W7 is 64-bit!)
I shut down and tried booting into safe mode.... Got the same result of a black screen, and tried entering D:windowsexplorer.exe but got the same error message:
"...ieframe.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error..."
..and again the W7 desktop "tried" to come up.
I suspect it's looking in W7's folder (C:) because the backup image I made of Vista probably contains the original MBR, which mapped Vista to C:. I was hoping when I re-installed W7 to C: with the restored VISTA image already in D: that W7 would create a correct MBR... and it did, I think, but it left the old MBR at the beginning of the D:drive TOO... so when I boot to D:, the MBR record [ON D:] is telling VISTA it is in C:!! Hence Vista goes pokin around in my W7 (C:|) directory.
I downloaded the bootable Vista Recovery CD but it didn't find any problems, and I believe that's because VISTA isn't the problem... the MBR on D: is!
I don't want to have to rebuild the Vista OS... just need to remove the incorrect (old) MBR from the beginning of the D: drive... Can I do that?? Can I test this theory by somehow reading the first sector of that drive?
My desktop icons are not working correctly the applications are working fine but the icons are all the same attached is a jpeg of what it looks like as it is hard to explain the problem.

I've a problem with my Icons on my Desktop.
As you see in the screenshot, the icon for my documents folder is not the icon i want to have.
So i wanted to change it in the "Desktopsymboleigenschaften", but there are no icons, which i could change.
I’ve removed all my external hardware, usb devices, printers etc… Expect the monitor, mouse and monitor.
I’m at a loss this problem started small freezing every once and while(I leave my computer on all the time) now I can’t get more then a minute or 2 into the desktop.
I’ve tried a lot of stuff and am hoping for further insight.

while surfing online i was looking into some language converter tools when my system hanged.. i manually shut down the system by holding the power button.. But since then on starting, my desktop and taskbar have disappeared.. however m able to access everything from task manager..
I looked onto 1 of the treads which had the solution to such a problem and changed the value of shell in the registry to explorer.exe.. However even then my desktop is not appearing on start up .. Only when i start a new process from task manager "explorer.exe", then my desktop appears..
