when saving Gif files they are saved in a filesize of bytes (58 bytes,62 bytes) it keeps changing, and when opening the file it doesn't show anything. what could be the reason of this? and yes i told the person to try and save with .gif in the end of the file name but it's the same. could it be protected gifs or something?

I am wondering, given that my RAM is sitting at max. levels, if there are any reasons, advantages or benefits to be had in changing the Virtual Memory - Paging File Size for all Drives, from the current size of 3369MB to the recommended size of 4603MB, or more....say 4950MB??
I am trying to change the size of Virtual memory on my sisters laptop. It is running vista home and has only 1 gb of RAM. I click on where you change the virtual memory and click CUSTOM (on the C drive, which is only hard drive she has). And i set it to 2048 min and 2048 max. I Click set then ok. then ok again, and once again ok. Then it prompts me to Restart the computer, so I do. But after I restart and check to see if it worked, it still shows that the custom size wasn't added.

I can change that specific window to Detail, and it will stay that way, but I can't figure out how to universally change all such windows to open in Detail. Anybody know?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer has three (3) physical hard drives. Two (2) of them with one or two logical partitions and the smallest drive without any partition. ALL partitions are listed in the "Virtual Memory Paging File" window.
The question is this; should I set just one (1) partition as my page file, or should I set ALL listed partitions (Main and Logicals) to be "Managed By System"? or; set all but one to "No paging file" and set the smallest drive for the "Virtual Memory Paging File"?
Drive 1 is 750 Gb partitioned in 200Gb (Main)/200Gb (Logical)/350Gb (Logical).
Drive 2 is 500 Gb partitioned in 250 (Main)/250Gb (Logical).
Drive 3 is 160 Gb not partinioned (no Logical).
Have found lots of information and suggestions on setting "Paging File Size" but none mentions anything about the logical partitions. I currently have them ALL set to "System Managed Size" and it reports a file size of 141000Mb allocated. I guess this is about 10% of the total disk capacities?
Does Windows live mail have the 2GB data file limitation that OE had or has it been improved? Did some Googling but can't locate an answer.

I've even changed the file save location and still the same. The only thing that works is when I click on download, instead of clicking save, I click open or run.

The problem is that this seems to lead to an ever-increasing mail file in Lotus. I am now at a 10 GB (!!) mail file, and it seems to be growing every time I use the desktop search. this not limited to Vista, btw, other people have the same problem under XP. Has anybody seen this before, and if so, is there a solution to this? Obviously, at some point I will run out of HD space...Sorry if this is the wrong forum. If so, where should I post this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I click on a folder, then look down in the Details Pane at the bottom it shows the number of files in the folder but NOT the accumulative file size total.
I also noticed the same thing when I had the Recycle Bin Folder open.
Using Vista Home Premium. Have a drive on the USB bus that came out of my old XP computer. Trying to access some text and Excell files on the drive. They come back with "Access Denied". I have read and tried all the suggestions I have found on the subject of changing file ownership. Nothing works. Still can not access these files.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI inserted a new, blank 1GB USB drive into laptop. Vista Home Basic promptly asked if I wanted it to be used for ReadyBoost. I responded "Yes". Subsequently when booted-up, Right-Click Computer Advanced System Settings - Advanced tab - Performance (.... virtual memory) - Settings button - Advanced tab - Virtual Memory Change ... button.
It shows "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" is ticked: "Paging file for each drive:" C: System managed F: (the USB stick drive): None
If I untick the "Automatically manage .." and select the USB stick drive, it shows only 103MB available; this figures, because the USB stick drive "F:", shows a "ReadyBoost.sfcache" file of 870,401kB, created at the time of the latest boot-up; thus it seems to be creating or refreshing the paging file on boot-up.........
New to Windows mail. I type and view screen using Ariel size 10 but when I print out mail I get size 12. I can't find a way to change it and it's annoying.

You can see the size of individual files in the Size column but you cant see the folder's contents size. This extreemly frustrating and I cant seem to find where I can enable that function. I know you can scroll your mouse over folders one at a time and a window will apear and you can see the size then, but thats just inconveniant for what Im doing. I need to be able to glance at multiple folder sizes constantly.

Hard to find software to work on it, occassionally I can make something work by changing the compability mode or running as administrator. Had I known all this when I got the computer, I would not have bought it.
How much trouble (cost too) to have someone change from Vista 64 to Vista 32. I am guessing that entails new drivers etc. I am just a normal user, don't play games, only the granddaughter age 11 plays games like Nancy Drew. I attempted to do this by going to Control Panel....Turn On/Off Windows Features....checked all of the boxed under .Net 3.0.....then it configues but then displays the message "an error has occurred. not all of the features were successfully changed" I have no idea what to do....I attempted to see if I could uninstall .Net 3.0 but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I recently mistakenly put a DVD-RW disc in my computer's E Drive. It was the first time I ever used a DVD-RW, and I bought a box of them by mistake thinking they were CD-RW discs. (I wanted to save money that day, so I thought I'd get the discs rather than a USB stick.) Now when I go to Computer> E Drive> Properties> Recording I have some options, but see no way to make the E Drive have CD-RW as the default rather than DVD-RW. I checked all the other tabs in E Drive> Properties as well, but can see no way to do it. This is a problem, because I just tried to format a CD-RW disc, and it went through the process only to open a window at the end saying the disc was unable to be formatted. I don't know if the change in E Drive from CD-RW drive to DVD-RW drive is related to the problem I had formatting the disc, but I suspect it might be.
My dad's laptop has a HDD which has 2 partitions. Both are WinXP which correctly shows on boot. My question is can I remove the first XP and install Windows 7 RTM instead without messing up the boot.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to try out Windows 7, but I didn't want to upgrade Vista yet because it was still in beta. So I was going to dual-boot Windows 7 and Vista. I downloaded a copy of linux that was designed for partitioning so that I could partition my hard drive. Before I partitioned it with linux, I had just one partition for Vista and that was it. I had linux trim it down about 30 gigs and then make a new partition with that free space. It did all that and didnt report any errors. So I restarted my computer and the windows loading screen came up for about a second untill it said "Windows failed to start and a recent hardware or software change might be the cause". And it gave the the option of starting windows normally or to launch startup repair. I picked start windows normally and it went back to the loading screen. After a few seconds at that it gave me a BSOD for about a second before it restarted. I was able to see the error number before it restarted. It was 0x000000ED. So after it restarted it went back to the same message again. I picked launch startup repair that time. It then told me that I should get my Vista install disk that run the repair tools............

I'd assumed that I'd be able to select English as the display language but, apart from being able to select an English keyboard, everything is in French. If necessary, I'll live with this (it's a way of improving my French) but, if I could do it at reasonable cost, I'd like to convert it to English.
Purchsing the full English version is out of the question, as is upgrading to French Vista Ultimate and downloading an English language pack. Purchasing the English Home Premium Upgrade would have been OK, but I believe that this won't work with my current French version. An upgrade DVD was included with the computer, which appears to require payment on-line; I assume that this would be French also, so it's of no use to me......
A few days ago, I downloaded a font from the internet onto my computer. I had difficulties loading it, and in a rush to download it to complete some work I (foolishly) messed with the 'Open With' selection. I'm not sure how I did it, but I changed the file to open with Microsoft Word, and then I realised that was a big mistake so I tried making it open with Internet Explorer, another mistake. Now it opens with one or the other, but just comes up with code. It was a zip file, and I just wanted it to open with nothing, if you get what I mean, just back to default. It's a pain, because I tried downloading a brush for my PSP8 (Paint Shop Pro 8, a drawing/graphics program) and once again it opens in internet explorer which I don't want. I tried removing Word and the Internet from the 'Recommended Programs' but so it's just empty, but it doesn't let me delete them. Both the brush file and the font should be in zip files, but instead of looking like the yellow folder with the zip they have either and 'e' for the internet or 'word' icon. It's really annoying, because now when I download zip files they all come up as internet or word files. Please could someone help me get rid of the word and the internet so they just have nothing, so they open like they should in whatever they should automatically, by themselves.

System behaves in that way since I bought my notebook.
