Ref. Windows Vista. I have noticed that when viewing Network that my router displays its type and most of the password. I'd like to remove the password information from the icon information. File - Rename is greyed.

I have heard you can hold the reset button on the back of the wireless router but will this reset my wireless network? By that i mean... will i be able to connect with my laptop still through that wireless network or will i have to set it up again?

Or, do I have to go through the entire process of re-formatting/wiping the drives and start from scratch? I am using the Ultimate version, and am not sure about these things.
I bought a new computer and it came with Vista Premium 64bit, can I have it run on 32bit, instead of changing my printer and some of my software.

Hard to find software to work on it, occassionally I can make something work by changing the compability mode or running as administrator. Had I known all this when I got the computer, I would not have bought it.
How much trouble (cost too) to have someone change from Vista 64 to Vista 32. I am guessing that entails new drivers etc. I am just a normal user, don't play games, only the granddaughter age 11 plays games like Nancy Drew. I have a 640GB hard drive which is way more than I ever needed. Was not aware of software issues like I can't use my Photo shop Sofware and other things I have.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently own a Vista premium 64bit laptop.....I'm trying to install Empire total war, which requires Directx 10. In order to install that I need to activate .Net 3.0. I attempted to do this by going to Control Panel....Turn On/Off Windows Features....checked all of the boxed under .Net 3.0.....then it configues but then displays the message "an error has occurred. not all of the features were successfully changed" I have no idea what to do....I attempted to see if I could uninstall .Net 3.0 but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I recently mistakenly put a DVD-RW disc in my computer's E Drive. It was the first time I ever used a DVD-RW, and I bought a box of them by mistake thinking they were CD-RW discs. (I wanted to save money that day, so I thought I'd get the discs rather than a USB stick.) Now when I go to Computer> E Drive> Properties> Recording I have some options, but see no way to make the E Drive have CD-RW as the default rather than DVD-RW. I checked all the other tabs in E Drive> Properties as well, but can see no way to do it. This is a problem, because I just tried to format a CD-RW disc, and it went through the process only to open a window at the end saying the disc was unable to be formatted. I don't know if the change in E Drive from CD-RW drive to DVD-RW drive is related to the problem I had formatting the disc, but I suspect it might be.
My dad's laptop has a HDD which has 2 partitions. Both are WinXP which correctly shows on boot. My question is can I remove the first XP and install Windows 7 RTM instead without messing up the boot.

This did not happen when I installed Vista x86 or XP x86, x64. Other machine running these OSes have no connection problem. What could be wrong with the Vista x64?

Situation: The XP's are fine. The Vista shows the networking map OK (I think). The reason I say I think is that, under the router icon is a switch icon. I have no switch that I know of. At least the Vista machine recognizes that there are three machines in the network. Internet works fine on all three machines. However, in Explorer, under Network, on the Vista machine, only the Vista machine shows up with its' shared folders.

However, when I want to share files between them, despite proceeding all the steps outlined in the following link, the desktop still cannot see the laptop yet the laptop can see and access the desktop shared folders.

Install went fine. I installed Vista 64 Business on a new HD today and changed nothing else as above. I cannot connect to the Internet at all through my router. When I bypass the router and plug in directly, I can connect without issues. This (for obvious reasons) will not work.

View 5 Replies View Relatedlast week virgin media installed TV, Phone and BB. since then, my sons desktop windows vista will not connect to the internet and has local only connection via a Belkin adapter. The adapter has found the router but will not connect. Previous supplier, tiscali. A friend has tried to change the IP address, and still nothing. We have tried to uninstall Norton security, but the machine seems to want to hold onto it, and will not fully uninstall. I have another desktop, which is plugged into the router and that works fine. My laptop which is also Windows Vista, has connected perfectly well. I am seriously pulling my hair out as what to do next. bearing in mind i can navigate a computer but not very technical.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI posted this message to forum sometime back have been using Vista home edition on a Toshiba laptop for almost 6 months now without any issues when suddenly since last couple of weeks I am having networking problems. Suddenly in the middle of work the connection would be lost. I am using wireless adapter. So I investigated the issue but could not find anything conclusive. When this happens I am unable to ping my router. Initially I suspected my cable modem / router but that is fine beceuase I have another laptop that works fine when this happens.
I now suspect that it is to do with a problem for which a hotfix is available. Unfortunatley when I filled out the form I received an email from MS support that the hotfix is not available!!! Not sure where to go from here. Why write a KB article with a dangling carrot when it leads to a dead end :-)
I wanted to try out Windows 7, but I didn't want to upgrade Vista yet because it was still in beta. So I was going to dual-boot Windows 7 and Vista. I downloaded a copy of linux that was designed for partitioning so that I could partition my hard drive. Before I partitioned it with linux, I had just one partition for Vista and that was it. I had linux trim it down about 30 gigs and then make a new partition with that free space. It did all that and didnt report any errors. So I restarted my computer and the windows loading screen came up for about a second untill it said "Windows failed to start and a recent hardware or software change might be the cause". And it gave the the option of starting windows normally or to launch startup repair. I picked start windows normally and it went back to the loading screen. After a few seconds at that it gave me a BSOD for about a second before it restarted. I was able to see the error number before it restarted. It was 0x000000ED. So after it restarted it went back to the same message again. I picked launch startup repair that time. It then told me that I should get my Vista install disk that run the repair tools............

I'd assumed that I'd be able to select English as the display language but, apart from being able to select an English keyboard, everything is in French. If necessary, I'll live with this (it's a way of improving my French) but, if I could do it at reasonable cost, I'd like to convert it to English.
Purchsing the full English version is out of the question, as is upgrading to French Vista Ultimate and downloading an English language pack. Purchasing the English Home Premium Upgrade would have been OK, but I believe that this won't work with my current French version. An upgrade DVD was included with the computer, which appears to require payment on-line; I assume that this would be French also, so it's of no use to me......
A few days ago, I downloaded a font from the internet onto my computer. I had difficulties loading it, and in a rush to download it to complete some work I (foolishly) messed with the 'Open With' selection. I'm not sure how I did it, but I changed the file to open with Microsoft Word, and then I realised that was a big mistake so I tried making it open with Internet Explorer, another mistake. Now it opens with one or the other, but just comes up with code. It was a zip file, and I just wanted it to open with nothing, if you get what I mean, just back to default. It's a pain, because I tried downloading a brush for my PSP8 (Paint Shop Pro 8, a drawing/graphics program) and once again it opens in internet explorer which I don't want. I tried removing Word and the Internet from the 'Recommended Programs' but so it's just empty, but it doesn't let me delete them. Both the brush file and the font should be in zip files, but instead of looking like the yellow folder with the zip they have either and 'e' for the internet or 'word' icon. It's really annoying, because now when I download zip files they all come up as internet or word files. Please could someone help me get rid of the word and the internet so they just have nothing, so they open like they should in whatever they should automatically, by themselves.

System behaves in that way since I bought my notebook.

I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bits installed on my computer. Along with installing this, I also installed tons of drivers etc. however I do not need all of them at the start of every boot. So I wanted to delete them from the startup list, but this is not possible. When I go to Windows Defender > Launch programs, and click on the programs I want to disable from launching along with Windows, the options to Delete or Disable go grey.

I do have small kids that sometimes touch the keyboard, so that might have something to do with it, but I don't think so. I say its the resolution, but I am not even sure of that. When it happens the icons get bigger--and webpages font sizes become too big for a page. I have tried manually adjusting the screen resolution, but that doesn't seem to be the answer--it doesn't put it back the way it was before. To fix the problem, I have been restoring my system to previous dates---but it always seems to re-occur.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have setup a friends vista mail to authenticate via pacbell.net's servers for outgoing mail. All works well for a few days, then stops working. Upon re examination of the mail settings, the smtp port has reverted to 25 (set manually to 460 something) and the use ssl checkbox is unchecked. I have showed my friend how to re-set the settings so he is not losing much sleep over this one, but it annoys me.
