Vista has blocked access to all of my files, and it's not because I did anything from a non-administrator account. This happened to me several months ago, and could not be resolved no matter which account I tried to make changes from (Vista never has saved any changes to my permissions settings even in the original Administrator account). All posted comments presumed it was as basic as switching user accounts, but when none of that worked I ended up deleting the subordinate account.
I've been fine for almost a year, and now the same problem, but with a lot more to lose in files and programs! Currently, I have one account other than the original "Administrator", which is also of type "Administrator" (never understood why this is possible, but it is, and I just couldn't limit my own permissions). I have Vista Home Premium 6.
They had Norton Internet Security 2007 installed and it was really causing more problems than it was solving so I tried to uninstall it and the uninstaller wouldn't finish and Norton's removal tool (the latest downloaded from their website) appears to be broken since it keeps saying that it's expired and won't do anything. So following some instructions I found I manually removed the Norton Program directories and registry entries and reset the winsock lsp settings with "netsh winsock reset". However the Security Center now shows that the Firewall is on but when I go to Control Panel / Windows Firewall it says that the Firewall is off.
The problem is that despite having done all this any program other than Internet Explorer that needs internet access is being blocked. Spybot Search & Destroy is being blocked from downloading updates, FireFox can't access the internet, NOD32 is being blocked from download signature updates, etc.
I've set up a Windows Vista standard user account for a foreign student staying with us, and found he can access all the files on my 'C' drive. Is there some way this access can be blocked?
Yesterday my (Vista 32) system crashed so hard that it took some system files with it, necessitating a complete re-install with all the headaches and thoughtless wreckage it does to one's file system. I'm desperately in need of many of my old "My Documents" files, etc. and have searched around for them, to no avail. I've been trying to access the old Users/Account folder I used in my previous installation (where I presume most of these files are located). I need to grand admin permissions to do this, and I do, but then a new window opens up and it's literally nothing but a *black* (not blank) empty space. I get no further explanation or access.
a) Where are my old files? Have they been deleted?? b) How do I access this folder? I've seen in other forums things that tell me this users/account folder may just be a sort of 'pointer' used for legacy purposes. What's going on?
I have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?
The control panel opens fine. I can access all items in the control panel except "Network and sharing center" and the "User accounts" (I can't access this sections via the taskbar either). What happens when I open one of the two items is I get a popup saying the following; WINDOWS EXPLORER HAS STOPPED WORKING. I used to be able to access these items. And one day, I just coulodn't anymore... I'm using Vista Ultimate x64
I ran Spybot S&D, got rid of any viruses it got and Mallware Bytes, again, removed everything. Even ran McAfee and got rid of whatever. But each time i run the scan on Spybot S&D it finds site that redirect me. I press fix selected items but it responds by saying "cannot access hosts file. Access is denied" I tried to untick the "protect hosts file form hijackers" in IE tweaks but keeps getting checked. On top of that the Hosts file is missing.
I recently saved word documents to disc. It saved properly. Now I cannot access the file from the disc because the original file/shortcut was deleted from my computer.
i installed World of Warcraft and it's expansions and started patching it. When patching from 3.1.0 to 3.1.1, the process kept stoping and 70% then just exit without returning any error in return. So i thought i should run the Repair tool and try again. Only now, when i tried to access WoW.exe i got this error: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
So i came upon this little reg file called Take Ownership, i ran it but nothing has changed. Also, if i: right click wow.exe->properties->compatibility i cannot tick the "Run this program as an administrator" box. My only options now, are a complete reinstall of the game and patches (but that's just wrong, because there has to be a more logical solution).
I have a File Sharing Problem. Here is the situation. Both Computers DELL and HP Desktops Running Vista Home Premium. Connected to the Network. Wited Connected. Details on both computers... Work Group = OFFICE Network Discovery = ON File Sharing = ON Public Folder Sharing = ON Password Protected Sharing = OFF Media Sharing = ON
The HP Computer can see all Files and Folders on the DELL. Example Documents, Pictures, Music etc. I can open all these folders, add, delete etc. No Problems....
I have spent 2 weeks on this now. I recently installed Vista Ultimate on my main pc (PC1), and using the default sharing wizard, shared a series of folders to the 'Everyone' group, as I allow my private home network to access my shares anonymously. Everything was working fine for the first few days, PC2 and PC3 where able to successfully access the shares, until one day it just stopped working and when PC2/PC3 attempted to access the shared folders via ‘Start > Network’ or UNC Path \VISTA , it would say “Access is Denied”. Having said that, to make it more complex, the shares are accessible if you type the folder share name, ie \VISTAMovies.......
We have a access data program that we use for fiscal year like 07/01/07 - 06/30/08. I have copied the information into a new access file but the date is set for last year. Where do we go to change the date? We did not write this program. We are using windows 2000.
I am having an issue with accessing the host pc. I have shared a couple of folders on the host pc but when i try to access it from two other pc in our office i get an error of access denied. from the host pc i can access the files shared on the other two pc's. From pc 1 i can access the files on pc 2 and the same goes for pc 2 accessing pc 1 fils with no problem. ITs just when i try and access the host pc from pc 1 or pc 2 i can and i get the error saying access is denied. I have went onto the host pc and took off the firewall and also deleted the McAffee secuirty software and also when in and made sure the settings are on for file shairing but still nothing.
About a week ago my trial sub to Tend Micro expired. I uninstalled Trend (i have a full version Avast 4.8 home /license key) but immediately started getting this error msg --Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item -- when trying to open any applications, files/programs from desktop shortcuts. I also cannot open these programs from their file locations or as administrator.
just got a Acer Aspire 6935G, few months old, no previous problems. just ran sfc to check the system files and windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix them. the trouble is i cant access the CBS.log file to see the violation/s. keeps saying access denied, i have tried changing the file permissions for my user account (ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT) to full control but still i get access denied. should i take ownership?
running Vista Ultimate 64bit. I created a junction point which mapped to my User folder on external hard drive. Then removed this junction point and pointed it back to the default C:Users... location but ever since the file system is terrible slow even on basic operations such as rename file. So it's NOT a slow copy/move file issue, just that all basic file functions are terrible slow. It doesn't matter if it's in my Users folder or elsewhere. As you can imagine this is making my Vista installation completely useless as software such as Visual Studio is hanging on basic operations. I've done everything I can think of - defragging, turning off Search/Indexing service... still the same
I'm running Vista 32 bit since about one year, I've updated it to SP1 a month ago and it is still very slow. My computer is a Lenovo X61 Tablet with Intel Core Duo and 4 GB RAM. Vista decreased my productivity since this time extremly. Since I am consultant I stick with software, but it really hinders me working. Is there any solution to improve Performance for File Operations, Remote Desktop Access, etc.?
This has happened before about a week and a half ago, but i have a dell studio 15 with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and this program message pops up with the title "A program can't display a message on your desktop"- The program may need information or permission to complete a task.-
Program details: Message title: Access to file was denied Program path: Program Files/Network Associates/VirusScan/Res09?VshWin32.dll
When i clicked "Show me the message" my computer went to a gray screen (with older-themed windows looking message) there were two windows this time, one giving me the option to return and the other box showing a hand holding a moving green bug type thing, from what i remember it said this file is infected and needs to be deleted then replaced... it gave me a long list of about 8 or so options and i clicked 'delete' and nothing significant seemed to happen, because the 'delete' option was still there, so i clicked return and nothing had changed, my windows were still up and everything.
I have three computers networked together via a Linksys Wireless Router. One Dell running XP Pro, and two HP laptops (wireless) one running Vista Ultimate x64 and the other running Vista Home Premium x32. I have all issues resolved (that I've discovered so far anyway) except one. There is a shared external hard drive conneced via USB to the XP, which I have mapped to both Vistas. I can see it when I open 'My Computer' but when I click on it I get an error that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to view the item." The odd thing about it is that I can access the contents of the drive by right-clicking on it and choosing either 'explore' or 'open.' I can access drives mapped from the Vista(s) to the XP on the XP just fine, just not the other way around.
I ran sfc/scannow in administrator mode and it said it had found some corrupt files that it was unable to fix. I opened the C:WindowsLogsCBS directory and it contained 5 files: CBS,CBS.persist,CheckSUR,CheckSUR.persist and Filterlist. I attempted to open CBS but a message says " Access is denied ". The same applied to CBS.persist. I am able to open CheckSUR, CheckSUR.persist and Filterlist. Upon opening properties on these three files the date created, modified and accessed is May-28-09. The dates for CBS are as follows: Created: November-27-08; Modified: June-15-09; Accessed: May-31-09. The dates for CBS.persist are: Created: November-27-08; Modified May-31-09; Accessed:November-27-08. The CBS file is apparently 15.7 MB and the CBS.persist file is 50.2 MB. access the relevant CBS file?
Using Vista Home Premium. Have a drive on the USB bus that came out of my old XP computer. Trying to access some text and Excell files on the drive. They come back with "Access Denied". I have read and tried all the suggestions I have found on the subject of changing file ownership. Nothing works. Still can not access these files.
On external hard drives. is there a way to take control on the whole drive? (TONS of folders on 2 different drives that i'd like to rename, etc here and there.
My Son's computer was working yesterday and this morning he can't surf using IE 8 or Firefox. It appears Port 80 is being blocked. I have disabled the firewall temporarily and this did not resolve the issue. I did the "netsh winsock reset" and this did not fix the problem. I have reset my router with no change. I am able to ping the DNS, the Default router and his IP address within the command window. I can also ping yahoo.com, google.com within the command window, but can't reach them with either browser. He did not have System Restore enabled, so I can't use that as a solution. Can the group recommend some options for me to try? He is using Vista Home Premium, and a wireless card. I can also see ALL GREEN when I open up the Network Sharing tool. There is a green line between his IP and the Wireless Card and green line between the Wireless Card and the Internet.
I have a program that's supposed to start when I boot into Windows (Vista Home Premium, SP2). However, I get a message that says it's blocked - so, I have to go in and unblock it manually. Is there any way I can set it so it unblocks (or doesn't block at all)
I like to have some advice on my internet connection problems.. when i open up my browser and going to surf a little my connection blocks after a few windows. if i close down my browser, and open up again, it works the same some windows and blocks.
I just installed broadband internet on my HP Pavilion tx2000 notebook PC loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have not been able to access any site other than Google and its allies. I have turned off the windows firewall to avoid and conflict with the Norton Antivirus 2009 firewall. I have tried by disabling phising filters. But nothing working.
I live at a college where I'm the administrator on our computer in the common room. The computer is only meant to play music when we have parties and such, so I have made a normal account, besides the administrator account, that people can use. I have blocked all programs except the music program. I wondered if it is possible to block the Realtek program in a way so people can't use it/screw the settings up but so it will still be able to run at startup?
I am trying to run a program at startup that is continually being blocked at startup by the UAC and thus defeats the purpose of doing so. I think I need to change the permissions of the program in order to get this to work, but am not sure of what the correct approach is to doing this. What setting do I need to change and how do I get them to lock in. I am also running this program in XP compatibility mode if that makes a difference. I am the sole user/administrator of this PC.
when ever i go to this one specific website it will not come up the screen just says, request cancelled 101. does anyone know how to fix this? i used to be able to go to this website with no problrms at all and now my computer is blocked. i tried different web browsers.
