Advantage Keeping XPon Separate Partition?

Mar 26, 2008

I plan to build a new computer with Vista as the OS using a 500gb or larger hard drive. What's the current trend toward partitions? One partition, two or more? OS by itself on a separate partition? Programs on another, then media files on another? Any advantage to keeping XP (at all) on a separate partition?

Dual Boot Separate Partition

May 13, 2008

on a xp PRO pc, I installed a fresh copy of vista business edition. I must have missed the option for dual boot, It did install on a separate partition which was an empty E: for the XP system ( 4th partition on the large drive. now the once E; drive is C; and what was C: is not the e: drive. there seem to be no setting for me to allow optionally boot into the old xp pro which is still in the now active boot partition.

Moving Applications To A Separate Partition

Mar 7, 2009

Is there a clever way to move applications to another partition without having to reinstall them? I have walked through the registry changing partitions with some success but I had fewer and simpler applications back then. Similarly, in a multi-boot configuration with each OS and applications in separate partitions, is there a way to avoid installing applications for each OS?

Upgrading To Windows 7 Keeping All Data?

Oct 16, 2009

I would like to install Windows 7 on top of my existing Vista Ultimate installation thus retaining all the programs and data. I realize this may not be the best way to move to the new OS but I can't bear the thought of having to reinstall all the programs if I do a clean install. Will it be possible to do this and if so, what are the drawbacks?

Deleting Mail From One Computer But Keeping It On A New One.

Jul 29, 2009

I have just bought a new computer and transferred all my email accounts (3 accounts in total) and all the e-mail messages in each 3 over to my new computer. I should mention that one of the accounts is an Imap account. What I am trying to do is delete all the e-mail messages in each account on my old computer so that it is completely clean so I can then give it to my daughter without any of my messages on there.

The first time I deleted all of the emails on my old computer, it also deleted all of them on my new computer as well. How can I keep all of my emails that were transferred to my new computer and delete all of them on my old one without affecting my new computer? Is it a question of deleting each actual account in my old one completely? Or by doing this, will I subsequently delete all of the accounts on the new one as well?

Clean New Hdd Keeping 32bit Own Drive

Apr 21, 2007

I have finally got my 64 bit DVD from Germany of all places I thought it would of been Ireland for UK delivery, the length of time it's taken I thought it was on a carrier pigeon from Redmond ! Now seriously..........I am perfectly confident about installing and gathering the required drivers (already have as you might expect) and checked any software probs. Here's the bit were I'm unsure.OK first it has to be a clean install, there is no upgrade path from Vista HP x86 to the same X64 version, for obvious reasons. I have a clean primary partition on a different HDD to the 32 bit version where I will install it, the thing is can I install a trial version for 30 days as you can with 32 bit ? I don't want to activate it which will I presume cobble my 32 bit install with which there are no problems whatever, so I really want to evaluate the 64 bit for at least a couple of weeks before deciding to keep it and waste the 32 bit install. I have no interest in extending the allowed activation period (that's assuming you don't have to do it straight off cos you got 32 bit already). To sum up, I want to install x64 on a clean new HDD, keeping the 32 bit on it's own drive, can I do this and run the x64 for 30 days or whatever before I need to activate with the same code as the 32 bit which I have to assume makes the 32 bit no longer a valid install.............not prepared to extend period or try to hide drives or any other obstensibly against EULA terms, just want to have a reasonable 'test' period before the decision of which to keep.If anyone can find information about this I will be grateful to say the least, as some will be aware I'm not exactly a novice installing systems or indeed researching, but for the life of me I cannot find any 'answer' to my ponderings, all very well theorising how it should reasonably work, I just like to be sure.

Keeping Open Window Sizes Viewable Area

Mar 23, 2008

When I open a folder that contains a large number of files they are off the "viewable" window area. I end up having to use the handles to resize the window so I can see all my files. When I close the window and reopen it, it has reverted back to the small size and I have to resize it again. This doesn't happen on my XP machine a home. Is there a way to make the resized window remain the size I need it? Or is this a quirk of Vista?

Disk Management: Remove The Recovery Partition And Then Extend The C: Partition

Oct 5, 2009

I recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.

My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.

Recycle Bin On Separate Partion?

May 26, 2008

As the title states, I am wondering if there would be any sort of (even minimal) performance boost to setting the recycle bin to its own partition. Honestly, I don't know of a way (as yet) to do this. But, it would be nice to have ALL of the space on my partitions, and less used by windows.

It is also sometimes annoying to see the dialog pop-up stating that windows doesn't have enough space to delete something due to allocated space. I know that I can change the amount of space allowed, but it would be much simpler to have 1 partition strictly to cover the recycle bin...........

My question is- For the gaming machine I'm going to use Avast AV but do I need a separate firewall or is the one built into Vista good enough? Also I have heard of windows defender, is this already on Vista? Any other things/suggestions I need to do as soon as I start the new machine up? Installing Win 7 Same Computer Twice Separate Partitions

Nov 13, 2009

xAorKZKHA.1592@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl> I wanted to try Win7 without losing Vista, so I installed it on a separate partition to dual boot.So I have Vista on C: and Win 7 on G: - same disk, different partitions. A boot menu was set up, but Win 7 boots by default if I don't choose Vista instead.I now want to move towards Win 7 on C:, and return to just one partition. But I have quite a lot of software and shortcuts now set up on G:, and if I were to delete C:, change G: to C: I'd have to start uninstalling and reinstalling everything so that C: was referenced. by everything. I'd rather install Win 7 onto c:, and gradually install software again, whilst being able to continue booting into Win 7 on G; to carry on working as needed. So, if I were to install Win 7 again onto the C: partition, either by doing an upgrade, or formatting C: and doing a fresh install,

a) would that cause any activation/legal problems, having Win 7 installed on the same computer twice in separate partitions
b) if it was OK to do that, which installation would become the default boot option.

Separate Email Accounts In Vista For Wife & Me

Apr 28, 2008

Ok. I now own Vista and I'm trying to recreate the mail experience I had on my XP pc. My wife and I both have separate email accounts with our ISP and in XP Outlook Express we set up two identities so that our mail was separate.

When we opened up Outlook Express we were able to select which identity we wanted to operate under.

In Vista we log in to the pc using a single account and that's how we want to keep it.

Is it really impossible to have segregated email accounts in Vista?

I've seen hints that Live Mail, which is apparently new, allows this but none of the documentation is very clear.
