In a NG, I have joined with a question similar to that of the OP. I wanted to avoid a new thread to prevent that NG of being extended too much, and I expected only one answer. But my question initiated a lot of following postings. So, after all I wish I had made up a new thread. Is it possible to separate all these postings into a separate thread? Or at least to change the content of the subject-line?

View 5 Replies View Related"Windows cannot access specified device path or file...." I read every thread on this error message and none of them apply to my situation. It has nothing to do with my settings in users or regedit. They are all correct, and by all accounts I should be in full control.
My Computer, Control Panel, IEx64, and documents are the only things I can access. I'm locked out of everything else. Every program, process and download has this same error message. Even my Flash is disabled. I can "run as administrator" and change settings all I want, it still has this message.
I've attempted to run antivirus and registry fixes from an external device and it won't do that either. System Restore doesn't work, and I don't have the resources to reformat. I have had a blue screen once, but it seems to be stable now. The weirdest part is when the problem started. The day it happened, it was working perfectly fine. I shut it down, and came back later that day to use it, and it was like this all of a sudden. No one has access to it but me.
at first i did everything that's out there to do. fixing the half open connections, stopping netsh etc. my problem is when i'm downloading something with firefox it wont go over 40kb it bounces between 20 and 40kbs. i'm not sure about utorrent however, when i tried to download a movie it was downloading with 50kb but there wasn't many people seeding and when i tried to download something with lots of seeds it went up to 600kb so i think i somehow fixed utorrent. but with ie or firefox i can't get it to working.
when i jump on my 2nd computer which is running win xp pro i can download anything from net with 500+kb but on vista i'm having lots of trouble. also streaming video from sites like Internet etc is extremely slow as well
I think it would be neat to have everyone post up their PC specs and the score which Vista gave you in the perfomance center. Try and follow the same format.

there are many ndis.sys Blue Screen of Death postings on the net, but none of them seem to suggest that it is solved. Can it be solved? Or can someone point to a solution? the blue screen shows DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and I am using an onboard LAN card by Intel, with IRQ -3 (minus 3), the model is 82562-V2 10/100 It is on Vista SP1, with every possible upgrade installed.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI downloaded iTunes, version 8 I believe, and I see the progress line go all the way across in the Downloads window and the installer appears on my Desktop as TunesSetup.exe.part. It won't open and when I look at Properties, under General Tab it shows as having 0 bytes and in the Details tab, it shows as having 1.55 mb.

I have fully licensed copies of Vista and XP on separate HD on the same PC and I have to physically swop the SATA cable inside the PC to boot. I still have some Vista incompatible software on XP that I have to use from time to time. Can I set this to boot from the PC then select which OS to use? Vista SP1 has been installed. Appreciate any advice as the cable switching is a bit of a pain.

I just noticed a file in C: named SYM_REGISTRY_BACKUP.reg, dated 4/22008. It is quite large (223MB) so I wanted to delete it to free up some space. Searching the Internet, I can't tell if it is part of a virus or it I can safely delete it without breaking some legit working program (assuming it is not virus related). I scanned it with Norton and it says it is ok.

in my vista computer i have two partitions main C and recovery D that came like this when i bought the computer from dell. I have 1 main partition thats 500gb and another thats 15gb that i believe is called the recovery drive. Do i really need them separate like this. Whats the point in having them separate when i can combine them and have 1 nice partition
View 5 Replies View RelatedAs the title states, I am wondering if there would be any sort of (even minimal) performance boost to setting the recycle bin to its own partition. Honestly, I don't know of a way (as yet) to do this. But, it would be nice to have ALL of the space on my partitions, and less used by windows.
It is also sometimes annoying to see the dialog pop-up stating that windows doesn't have enough space to delete something due to allocated space. I know that I can change the amount of space allowed, but it would be much simpler to have 1 partition strictly to cover the recycle bin...........

I installed Vista on a PC that previously had XP pro. I basically only need vista nowadays and want to get rid of XP pro to gain more HD space.So, Vista is on partition C and XP is on partition D on the same hard drive. I can not delete or partition the XP part. I get an error message saying ."The attempted operation cannot be completed. This operation is not valid on volumes containing system partition, boot partition ore pagefiles".The XP partitions says "System, Primary Partition".I set the Vista partition to be 'active'.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had a new vista desktop for about 6 weeks. It is hooked directly into a Linksys router which in turn hooked to my DSL modem. I also have a laptop on the network connected wirelessly. For the first few weeks, whenever I clicl on network I see three icons--one for the desktop, one for the laptop and one for the router. Acouple of weeks ago I noticed that now there is only an icon for the desktop and for the laptop. I have rebooted several times and then run the network utility but the router ceases to show up. The router works as both pc's have internet access and both pc's share files ok.

I still have my old laptop and it still posts to the newsgroups via outlook express 6. I'm using it right now. Incidentally, Bellsouth/ATT is going to drop newsgroups next month.I have the same settings for the account in both laptops. This one is running XP pro. When I set up the acct on the Vista one, the headers came in asusual. Everything works as usual, except when I click on send, it doesn't send. I get an error message instead. I get this one: "windows mail could not post your message. etc...snip.. 441posting failed rejected by post filter port 119,secure (ssl): no, server error :401 error number: 0x800CCCA9" Is there a hidden trick to setting it up so it sends? I searched the net and one guy had the same problem and resolved it by changing the mimo to uuncode, or something like that, I forget exactly what they were, but I found them buried in a menur on my system somewhere, and made the change but it didn't fix mine.

The new system is going to be used for gaming and some surfing, all other stuff such as downloading and internet banking will be done on this machine which is running XP along with Avast and Comodo.
My question is- For the gaming machine I'm going to use Avast AV but do I need a separate firewall or is the one built into Vista good enough? Also I have heard of windows defender, is this already on Vista? Any other things/suggestions I need to do as soon as I start the new machine up? I was thinking of doing a system restore point before I put anything on it!
I had 2 seperate e-mail accounts when I used Outlook one for myself and one for my wife to move from one to the other I went "file, switch identities". Have now a new PC with Windows mail on Vista and our two mail accounts come into the one account in windows mail. How can i seperate these?

I must have missed the option for dual boot, It did install on a separate partition which was an empty E: for the XP system ( 4th partition on the large drive. now the once E; drive is C; and what was C: is not the e: drive. there seem to be no setting for me to allow optionally boot into the old xp pro which is still in the now active boot partition.

A boot menu was set up, but Win 7 boots by default if I don't choose Vista instead.I now want to move towards Win 7 on C:, and return to just one partition. But I have quite a lot of software and shortcuts now set up on G:, and if I were to delete C:, change G: to C: I'd have to start uninstalling and reinstalling everything so that C: was referenced. by everything. I have windows vista premium and there are 2 users on our computer. Whenever I load any software on my side, it also goes on to the other side and visa versa.When we had xp, this was not a problem as our settings were saved after each session. So my question is, how do I keep our settings separate in vista?

I'll copy and paste all = the info I'm sure you'll need below=20 but let me say right now that the browstat wouldn't run on the Vista PC. When I opened to text file it was empty. Also, you'll notice in the ipconfig that it says NetBios over TCPIP is disable but it's not. I = have no=20 idea why it says disabled (see pic)Thisis gonna be lengthy so please forgive me. View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen UAC kicks in for some reason, you can optionally choose to view more details where that dialog displays what looks like a long hexadecimal string - I haven't confirmed whether it is valid hexadecimal. The point is, its probably some kind of ID for that particular instance of UAC kicking in. Why isn't that string selectable so that it can be copied to the clipboard? Is that string stored as part of a log that UAC maintains?
