View 7 RepliesIn a NG, I have joined with a question similar to that of the OP. I wanted to avoid a new thread to prevent that NG of being extended too much, and I expected only one answer. But my question initiated a lot of following postings. So, after all I wish I had made up a new thread. Is it possible to separate all these postings into a separate thread? Or at least to change the content of the subject-line?
View 8 Replies View RelatedGetting my new system in a few days and it will have Vista Prem 64bit installed. The new system is going to be used for gaming and some surfing, all other stuff such as downloading and internet banking will be done on this machine which is running XP along with Avast and Comodo.
My question is- For the gaming machine I'm going to use Avast AV but do I need a separate firewall or is the one built into Vista good enough? Also I have heard of windows defender, is this already on Vista? Any other things/suggestions I need to do as soon as I start the new machine up? I was thinking of doing a system restore point before I put anything on it!
upgraded my xp os to vista home premium. uninstalled windows defender by mistake. cannot reinstall defender from download page because my computer is telling me that the defender software came with the vista upgrade.
View 7 Replies View RelatedOk. I now own Vista and I'm trying to recreate the mail experience I had on my XP pc. My wife and I both have separate email accounts with our ISP and in XP Outlook Express we set up two identities so that our mail was separate.
When we opened up Outlook Express we were able to select which identity we wanted to operate under.
In Vista we log in to the pc using a single account and that's how we want to keep it.
Is it really impossible to have segregated email accounts in Vista?
I've seen hints that Live Mail, which is apparently new, allows this but none of the documentation is very clear.
Has anybody installed Vista twice in separate disk partitions on the same PC? I've been successfully running multi-boot with 2 XPs and a Vista on 1 PC. There's plenty info about on how to do that. Now I'm going to separate all XP installs onto 1 PC, and all Vista installs onto another PC. Will this make life easier? So I'll be running Vista Home Premium twice on 1 PC. One install will be for production use, and the other for testing.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can't find a way to search for file types in Vista without entering part of a file name. For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). Has anyone else experienced this problem, or am I missing something?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to obtain a comprehensive listing of servers and interpreters that are a normal part of the Windows Vista Operating System? These are the only kinds of programs I expect the Security updates to be fixing.
Servers = Programs included with the OS which accepts commands from the Internet or LAN external to My Computer. Interpreters = Programs which will execute any kind of source code whatsoever like HyperTextMarkUpLanguage HTML or Basic or C+ or Fortran or whatever.
I know of no other kinds of programs unless you can tell me now that may work ndependent of User Control. If I could ID these rouge programs running in the background it would be better than the security updates themselves.
What is Windows Defender and is it needed? I have Vista (no SP1) and I also have Norton Internet Security installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using vista home premium with a 64-bit operating system. I have Avast free antivirus installed. I started getting messages from Vista Defender that my computer was being attacked by viruses, spyware and trojan horses. When I clicked "remove all" they wanted me to buy something. I restarted my computer and I am no longer getting the vista defender warnings, but I can't access several programs like windows media player, yahoo messenger etc.
Also, the icons for these programs disappeared from my task bar. When I try to launch these programs from the start menu I get a message that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I'm the only one that uses this computer.
"Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista [released] to manufacturing" see: Before you get too excited, note that: "In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update". So the bottom line is, we have to wait another month.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
Well i recently "upgraded" to vista 64, which atfirst i thought might of been a good thing! Which it is, sort of... its such a nightmare downloading all the correct drivers whic are actually compatible and getting programmes that actually work!
Came to download bitlord now that wont work, and i cant install a lot of my girlfriends sims expansions etc.
So does anyone know a good torrent downloader which will work with vista 64?
Dave.
The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that I am unable to download things. I click download and the bar fills up with blue and it says saving to desktop, but when I click to the desktop, nothing has downloaded. I have tried using 'run' instead of save and the blue bar fills up and it says saving to temporary folder, but then nothing. I can't open e-mail attachements that need downloading or download any thing from the net at all.I have tried several system restores to various different dates and got something to save to the desktop once, but now anything I try and download doesn't download.I have tried running the computer in safe mode with networking but the problem still occurs. I have also tried resetting internet explorer, but again that does nothing. i have tried sfc /scannow , but it came up with no violations or errors. View 9 Replies View Related1.. I have an HP Pavilion desktop running Vista Home Premium - Works like a gem and downloaded and installed SP1 easy as anything and all is fine.
2.. I have an ACER laptop that I installed Vista Ultimate on and it does all the download updates as necessary and works well.
3.. However, it seems NOT to want to know about downloading and installing SP1 - I have auto update switched on but SP1 never seems to be in the list of updates
4.. SP1 does not show on the summary of laptop either...so I assume it has NOT downloaded and installed SP1,Any ideas why it does not want to know about SP1? The laptop has 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard disk and a 128MB video card.....
I purchased my Vista through the Windows website and used the download option. I would like to have a hard copy installation disc. Is it possible to create a Vista disc from the download files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've read just about every thread about vista not booting and am completely at a loss. I am running Windows VISTA Ultimate x64, do not have the original disk with me as i brought this computer to work on to my vacation spot to do some work. After running a botched program, I got a msg saying the computer would restart automaticly. Having extensive windows knowledge I know this is never a good situation to be in. I am using a windows x64 boot disk that i found from neosmart as I do not have access to the original disk.

I have tried every option in recovery options. Just to clarify, after everything posts, without errors, I get a black screen with a white cursor that moves down a few lines and doesn't do anything after that.......
I am running Windows Vista Premium Home SP1. When I boot my computer, Windows Defender doesn't start automatically. It works fine if I start it manually. I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.

View 7 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know if the XP Virtual Machine that comes with certain version of W7 comes with a separate disk? Or, is it woven into the W7 disk? I ask this in case I
1) need to revert completely to XP, or
2) like a different virtual machine better, such as Virtual Box.
I have fully licensed copies of Vista and XP on separate HD on the same PC and I have to physically swop the SATA cable inside the PC to boot. I still have some Vista incompatible software on XP that I have to use from time to time. Can I set this to boot from the PC then select which OS to use? Vista SP1 has been installed. Appreciate any advice as the cable switching is a bit of a pain.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy system IS 64 bit OS. System Info says 64 Bit Operating System.
Why it won't upgrade?
I just noticed a file in C: named SYM_REGISTRY_BACKUP.reg, dated 4/22008. It is quite large (223MB) so I wanted to delete it to free up some space. Searching the Internet, I can't tell if it is part of a virus or it I can safely delete it without breaking some legit working program (assuming it is not virus related). I scanned it with Norton and it says it is ok.

in my vista computer i have two partitions main C and recovery D that came like this when i bought the computer from dell. I have 1 main partition thats 500gb and another thats 15gb that i believe is called the recovery drive. Do i really need them separate like this. Whats the point in having them separate when i can combine them and have 1 nice partition
View 5 Replies View RelatedAs the title states, I am wondering if there would be any sort of (even minimal) performance boost to setting the recycle bin to its own partition. Honestly, I don't know of a way (as yet) to do this. But, it would be nice to have ALL of the space on my partitions, and less used by windows.
It is also sometimes annoying to see the dialog pop-up stating that windows doesn't have enough space to delete something due to allocated space. I know that I can change the amount of space allowed, but it would be much simpler to have 1 partition strictly to cover the recycle bin...........
