Driver And Updates, Windows Update Is Refusing To Give SP2
Dec 1, 2009I got a new Acer Aspire M3800-U3802A desktop machine and I updated everything in Vista HP SP1 OEM. However, I did not get its IE8 since it was optional and I didn't want it yet. It does not offer me a SP2. Why is that? I read it can be picky on drivers and stuff, but which ones? Do I really have to get every driver and updates from Acer.com? I know I can get the stand alone SP2, but I would like to know why Windows Update is refusing to give me SP2.

Aug 6, 2009I know two folks that just got new computers with Vista. They both seem to be having the same problem with IE 7 or 8 refusing to load pages after surfing for a period of time. They both say a reboot is necessary to restore IE to usability. I have not found a definite answer on the net, so does anyone know if this is a common problem in Vista and how to fix it?

May 1, 2008Microsoft says they will give support during "warranty period"- I opened a support request and after a few basic suggestions Microsft is now not responding to my requests for assistance. I last heard from their "escalation engineer" on 4/22 and today is May 1; I've sent him thee emails and he has not responded. Their basic suggestions- "make sure the phone line is plugged into the fax modem" and "try a reinstall-in-place" -solved nothing. I'm basically getting to understand it is a problem with RPC Server permissions, somehting I've found myself in the Microsoft Newsgroup and the Knowledge Base. And if I could find it, I gotta wonder why the Microsoft "support professional" couldn't suggest it.
I paid $360 for Vista- and they are not answering my support emails. This is BAD SERVICE. Nobody cares. My home PC is Vista, but I sure as hell am not going to use Vista for my corporation. That's right, I run a business. And this little episode is going to ensure that my staff and I work to move EVERYTHING to Open Source platforms; I've NEVER had this kind of trouble getting a Linux issue resolved- and my copy of Ubuntu was FREE as opposed to the $360 I paid for Vista!

And unless I'm mistaken, I'm only entitled to a Recovery disk that I create or order from Hewlett Packard. I don't want to buy an upgrade or full install of the 64-bit Ultimate Edition. Oct 6, 2009What, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:
(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.

Tried changing by accessing Properties from Windows Mail but when I change to "Make this the defalut e-mail handler, apply and save then exit and return to Properties the setting has returned to Not the default e-mail handler.

Note:

Jul 29, 2009Starting about 2 weeks ago, I can't open attachments in Windows Mail. Message says "command failed to execute" I have been reading the posts and still don't know what to do. How do I know if IE8 has been installed as an update? I'm inexperienced with technical stuff. I don't think I installed it, could it have installed on it's own as an update? Tried saving them to desktop but don't know how to separate them from the e-mail, so they still don't open.
