Windows Mail Conflicts With TrendMicro Antivirus Software (?)

May 16, 2008

My new Dell XPS 1330 with Windows Vista Ultimate was purchased with TrendMicro antivirus installed. All worked reasonably well until automatic updates installed for TrendMicro and I installed Windows Service Pack 1. Windows Mail stopped working shortly after with error message 0x800CCC15 after send /receive is pressed. Also, after trying again, sometimes error message 0x800CCC19 comes up. This is not a problem with my POP server as I can send and receive on my other computer running XP.

The Vista computer was restored to prior to the updates but the problem persisted. Dell support finally disabled TrendMicro and called this a fix, and suggested that I buy Norton antivirus. Maybe I should, but I've already bought a 3 year subscription to TrendMicro as recommended by Dell in their sales website, so I'm reluctant to do that. Also, it worked before so I think it may be a Windows problem.

Windows Mail Not Sending & Receiving After Installing Avira AntiVirus

Apr 20, 2008

We were running Trend Micro as our antivirus, but when it expired I was told that Avira was a good one. I downloaded the free version and installed it on my computer. The first scan it did find a trojan virus, but said it was very minor and was just something that got info on our household. I quarantined the file. I then went in and uninstalled Trend Micro since I wouldn't need it anymore.

Whe I restarted my computer my Windows Mail would no longer work. I have multiple email accounts set up with it. It says connecting, receiving mail (45 messages) and then I get this error message: An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.gaeagraphics.com', Server: 'mail.gaeagraphics.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005 Then it goes on to do the same for my other mail account. An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop3.cecomet.net', Server: 'pop3.fairpoint.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005

I contacted my isp first to find out if there was a problem and after walking me through some things said that it was an issue with windows mail. So I uninstalled Avira. No change to windows mail. I did a system restore back to a week ago. No change to windows mail. It continues to give me the error message everytime I hit send & receive. Except .. tonight it let 1 message through, none of the rest, though

Firefox Conflicts With Vista

Feb 24, 2009

Anyone know of any problems between Firefox and Vista. Had a laptop for a week with Firefox and had to reformat the laptop back to factory settings. Acer helpdesk said it could have been Firefox. I would have drops in wireless connection and programms freezing which could only be cleared by hard reset.

Also had zone alarm, AVG 8 and Spy bot running on it. Since re format only used McAfee free trial and Internet Explorer and it has been working fine.

AVG Free 8 Conflicts: Change Settings

May 9, 2008

Today I downloaded the new free AVG. I have this and Spyware blaster and Super antispyware installed. I ran a scan with te AVG and it found Trojan's, adware, etc, or so it seemed. When the summary came up at the end a result of 0 (as in nothing found) came up in each categry, with about 214 in the warnings category, potential threats. Did the AVG somehow mistake the protection files for the.

The software on both mine and my dad's laptops is pretty identical, and the same result showed up on both. I wasn't sure what to do at the end. I haven't changed any settings and as I understand it all the threats were removed. At any rate I
ran the scan again and nothing was found.

Antivirus 360

Jan 27, 2009

Antivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program that uses false scan results and aggressive advertising in order to promote itself. This rogue is advertised by the Vundo Trojan and is replacing the Antivirus 2009 rogue program that Vundo has been aggressively advertising. If you are infected with the Vundo Trojan you will see a large amount of pop-ups stating that your computer is infected and that you should install Antivirus 360 in order to protect yourself. If you click on the ad, Antivirus 360 will be downloaded to your computer and you will be prompted to install it.

Once installed, Antivirus 360 will be configured to start automatically when you start Windows. Once started, the program will perform a scan, and when done, will list a variety of legitimate or nonexistent files as infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. What is so dangerous about these scan results is that the files that Antivirus 360 states are infections are actually legitimate Microsoft files, that if deleted, will cause Windows to become unusable. Therefore, if someone believes the results from this program they may manually delete the files thinking they are infections and cause their computer to no longer function. Some files that it states are infections are:C:WindowsSystem32svchost.exe

C:WindowsSystem32alg.exe
While running you will also see a constant barrage of false security alerts stating that your computer has a variety of security risks. These risks range from files being modified to private data being sent to a remote host. These alerts, though, are false and are only being shown to further scare you into thinking your infected, when in fact the Antivirus 360 program is the actual infection. Unfortunately, these alerts coupled with the Vundo Trojan will affect your computer's performance and you will notice that it begins to operate slower.

Windows 7: Windows Mail Versus Windows Live Mail

Oct 6, 2009

What, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:

(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?

(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?

(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?

My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.
