I have burned many DVD (data) on my XP before I switch a computer. Now that I have a Vista x64, the CD drive won't read them. If I use ISOBuster I can see the track and extract them. But if I use Windows Explorer it will prompt me to "prepare blank disc"! Any help? I already finalize the disc and confimred it. Do a hardware diagnostic check and turns out nothing went wrong. By the way, how can I make Vista not look for application if I insert other CD.
HD crashed. Before I reformatted it, I went into the Command Prompt option from the Windows RE and copied all the files and folders to a usb harddrive. (I used the robocopy command from the command prompt.) Now, when I connect the hd to another machine, I cannot see and of the files or folders that I copied in Windows Explorer. I know the files are there becaue I can still see them from a command prompt and Windows (Vista) even reports that there are 27GB used on the disk. How can I see these files in Windows so that I can copy them back?
About once a month I backup many files onto a blank DVD disk. Currently, if I insert one of those partially full DVDs into my drive-E, it is recognized and everything works normally. When I started my January backup two days ago I find that if I insert a blank DVD Windows Explorer does not recognize it, and tells me to insert a disk. If I then again click on the drive-E, the hour-glass curser appears for several minutes, but nothing else happens. Per Task Manager, "Windows Explorer is not responding." Using Task Manager is the only way I can close Windows Explorer. I have tried this with several partially recorded disks, and with several blank disks, all from the same manufacturer, same style, etc. Process is the same: Windows Explorer handles previously used disks as it always has, but fails to recognize new blank disks.
I do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more. This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista. I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")
I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above. Does anyone have a solution? I got a kernel missing or corrupt all of the sudden so I had to format and reinstall Vista Business. Im having Lenovo t61 BUT now after 'expanding files' inthe vista installprocessis complete at100% the PC is supposed to reboot, but I get an error saying 'windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase...' Ive read that I might try to install drive controller drivers in the 'load driver' thing.. The problem is that I dont know what file i need!? what driver do I need ? When you are in explorer and are manually typing in a long folder path or at a command prompt navigating through many directories, below are two cool tips that will help you save time.
The first is one that I have been using for years. When working at a command prompt, instead to typing in the full text of an item, just hit the tab key to bring up full items. For example, say I want to change the directory to the Windows folder. At a command prompt I would type in CD wind and then hit the tab key and "Windows" will automatically show up. Think of the tab key as a kind of auto complete for DOS. This same technique also works in Windows Explorer.....
I insert a CD to burn, and even though its blank, I get a message saying "insert blank disc" and it ejects my disc. This has happened with many CD's that Itry.
I had IE 7, it "broke". So I downloaded IE 8. Still did. I then used my recovery files to replace the ones I had. Thinking my program folder was broken. To anyone who says use firefox. I am, its that certain websites love IE*coughrobloxcough* and will not work in other browsers. This is what I am doing... Clicking Internet Explorer, it doesn't open up. 1 minute later it does but its blank. I can type in websites but it will not go to it. It can't close so I have to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to manually close it.
I am going to try CC to see if it fixes it. What sucks is that all my restore points are somehow "gone" and now I can't go back to the one I went to before that fixed this problem. I also try Registry Booster to see if it was a DLL error, It didn't fix anything. I also found out this isn't ONLY an internet explorer error. You know how Windows comes with a Windows help menu that pops up once in a while? Well, all the images are red X's. Tried using the registry cleaner and the normal cleaner to see if it fixed anything. It did not. I can't find the security options for internet Explorer because its not even there. Is there a way to uninstall IE8 so I can go back to IE6?
I open up window update it opens up with a blank explorer window. it stays open till i force it to close with windows task manager. it forces it to close while restarting my entire explorer at the same time, and it closes out some programs sometimes when it does it too.
I'm having a problem installing vista 64 bit or 32 bit after I already had it on my machine. Here is what happened and what I have. I built this machine just 3 weeks ago, mb is gigabyte ep45c-ud3r, e8400, 4 gigs of G.Skill pc 8500, 320gig Samsung sata drive, Samsung cd/dvd burner, and I also have 2 older IDE drives running I think they are 175 gigs each. Do the other day I got a disk with vista ultimate 64 bit and decided to run a clean install, my machine had the 32 bit system of the same.
The 64 bit system began to install and when it gets to the point after you select which drive to install it on goes to the next screen it starts to open files, or extract shows 0% one dot and comes up with this message: "windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase, restart the installation" when I do that same thing happens and now same thing happens with the 32 bit system, I have tried 2 disks for that.
I have downloaded the ISO file for Win7, and have burned an install DVD. My intention is to do an upgrade from Vista SP1, but I'm wondering: What is the simplest (best?) way to revert to Vista, if I have to?
I am having a really crappy time trying to install this one program onto my comptuer. I dont understand this error i keep getting. (The error says " Installer user interface mode not supported. Unable to load and to prepare the installer in GUI mode") I am getting really upset and i do need this program installed very badly.
When I open windows explorer in either XP or Vista it opens the "My Document" folder as the default. However I only want "My Computer" to be expanded and everything else left unexpanded.
I need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. Basically my gf's pc started to mess up alot, she was using it at uni with no internet connection but as soon as she finished uni and brought it back and started using the internet it started playng up, so she got it formated, but alas, no vista disc, she still has the product code on a sticker on the PC itself. She has already paid for vista so is there a way of getting the vista disc (for her pc) for free?? if so/if not where can i get one and will this work ok??
im unable to burn music from my laptop, i have vista basic and until now ive had no problems. I insert a blank cd and it auto loads, then it asks to format before continueing, i click yes, it formats then right at the end it says unable to finish formatting and opens the cd. I then try to burn onto it and the cd stays blank.
when i put a dvd (any dvd) into either dvd drive i get the following message : "Windows cannot access this disc. The disc might be corrupt. Make sure the disc uses a format that windows recognises. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it."
Problem 1 - is that the drives are actually ide and not scsi Problem 2 - doesnt matter what disc i put in neither of them can read it Problem 3 - its definatly vista an not hardware as both drives work perfect in same machine with windows 7 instalation
Ive had this problem twice before and its due to an update windows installs... but which one?? It always happens during the instalation of sp1 or within days after it. The last time it happened was at my last install of vista x64, sep 2008. I think i got the KB number from this site but i cant find the right one to uninstall. does anyone know which KB update i should uninstall please? ive spent 4 hours looking through masses of google results to no result. Ive already uninstalled KB943899 but that didnt fix it.
I am running Windows Vista-Home Premium Edition x64 bit and Internet Explorer 8. I would like to know where and how I can make a back up disc for "BOOKMARKS"? Knowing this how can this backup disc be applied back into Windows I/E 8 "Bookmarks" should I ever need to restore Bookmarks?
I bought a laptop with vista home premium preinstalled on it and i didnt get a recovery disc. I want to change the language to english as currently it is in german.
i need to restore my computer back to the factory settings. problem is i don't have the disc everybody keeps mentioning. i use to have another computer with windows xp on it. i restored that computer without a disc no problem. is there a way to restore vista basic to factory settings without a disc?
I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
I have Vista Home Premium SP2 on a desktop, fully updated. When I open "Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off" the list is empty. It momentarily says "Please Wait...", then never populates the list.
I read that it may have something to do with Windows Updates errors, so I checked my history. I found 9 failed ones from 10-15 and 10-14. I went to the windows download site and tried to manually install them. Every one I tried ended with a message: "This update does not apply to your machine." I didn't bother to try a couple of them since I do not use Windows mail. Maybe updates had nothing to do with it. The problem persists.
I ran sfc /scannow and after completion it said corrupt files were found but was unable to fix some of them. I don't have a Vista CD but I do have all of the recovery disks I made when it was new, however I'm not sure how to proceed.
I installed Kodak EasyShare's printer and photo software. Since then, when I plug my Canon 900IS camera in, AutoPlay no longer brings up the Import Pictures window, and I can no longer access Photo Gallery, which now is just a blank window that I can't close (I have to reboot to get rid of it). I uninstalled the Kodak software but that didn't help. Ideas? I'd like to have the Import Pictures feature back, as well as Photo
I have a ThinkCentre PC with Windows XP Home installed on on it. I've got another machine that is currently running Vista. If I make a install cd from the XP machine, can I install it on my other Compaq machine that is running vista (it came with XP Media Center Edition 2005 but it had all this crap preloaded onto it). Or, can I reformat the XP Media Center Edition PC, and then make an install dvd out of that (i.e. will it remove the crap that Compaq put on it?).
It has been a long time since I checked my WEI and I decided to check it today. I was greeted with the first attachment ("Capture1"). Then I clicked on the WEI to check how each of my components rated. It was blank!! (see "Capture2"). Has anyone any idea how this happened? Or how to fix it?
I've read just about every thread about vista not booting and am completely at a loss. I am running Windows VISTA Ultimate x64, do not have the original disk with me as i brought this computer to work on to my vacation spot to do some work. After running a botched program, I got a msg saying the computer would restart automaticly. Having extensive windows knowledge I know this is never a good situation to be in. I am using a windows x64 boot disk that i found from neosmart as I do not have access to the original disk.

my stepdaughter's laptop's hd crashed (unusable), she of course lost the system disc. I have my laptop and system disc, both laptops are gateway but different models 6752 and 6836. I have a new hd on order, and I will install vista with my disc and her windows product key (her laptop) I shouldn't have any problem with that right?
Every time I run a Windows Vista Memory Diagnostics and it completes and gets ready to boot back into Windows it freezes on the blank screen with the progress bar running? While Windows Memory Diagnostics was testing it didn't report any errors and memtest64 also didn't report any errors.
