Waking From Sleep And Detected A New Private Network
May 26, 2009
I am running vista home premium on a dell 530 and have just had to restore factory settings due to my user account being corrupted. I have reinstalled all my software and now have realised that it is doing what It has done before in the five months I have had it (after restore to factory settings) which is waking from sleep on it's own. I did find a solution to this on a forum which is to go to device manager / network adapter / intel.... / properties / power management / wake from LAN and uncheck the first two settings "wake on directed packet" and "wake on magic packet". Now as this solves the problem I am confused as to why my "factory settings" have it checked???? Now, immediately after closing the properties window I got a dialogue box saying that a new private network has been detected with a highlighted option to call it local network2... this freaked me out as I have not connected anything to even remotely act as another network and further more there was an ip address in the bar at the top of the dialogue box which I noted (169.254.175.32/255.255.0.0) I would just like to know if this is behaviour of a virus of some sort or something normal beyond my understanding.

I'm trying to find out why my computer keeps waking up from sleep. Unfortunately I've not been able to track this down. I leave the house around 9am, don't get back home till 8pm, and the computer has turned on while I've been at work. My fiancee can't ever remember to check right when she gets home to see if it's on then or not, so I have no other time frame to deal with at the moment except for what happened today.

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 that came installed with Vista Home Premium. I upgraded to SP1 and, after upgrading to 4 gigs of ram i learned because Acer messed up video addressing, i can only get 2.96gb when i'm using 64mb of ram for video...increasing the amount makes the amount of ram to windows drop exponetally (at 256mb i've only got 2 gigs..it's wasting almost half the ram)...but that's not my issue..i'll never get it resolved becuase Acer is none-too-interested in actually doing anything to fix it and telling me it's "my problem". Oh well.
I do have a strange issue. When I take my laptop out I generally put it to sleep...I don't like hibernate..it's never worked for me in the past and sleep is just so much faster and convient. The sleep mode has worked surprisingly well for me, but i'm notcing a strange oddity. Every once in a while after bringing the laptop out of sleep mode...the screen will come on...but then it'll flicker out. If i can manage to click on the password prompt before it turns off and enter my password, the screen will come back on after the session logs in...however most of the time I have to put it back to sleep and wake it back up.
this really isn't a major major problem..i know nothing is going to work flawlessly all the time. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior and if they fixed it, what they did to do so. I can live with it, but it'd be nice to see it gone too, ya know? Other than that...and the time the kernel-driver framework driver died...I'm quite impressed with Vista..it's turning out to be a rather usable OS.

I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...

Just returned from holiday and while we were away I changed my laptop network in vista from private to public as advised and the internet worked fine. Now at home I can’t connect to my router, and I get a message saying that the details held on the computer is not the same as the router. Also there is no “customise” function being shown on the network and sharing centre screen to switch back to private network. I’ve tried everything to set up a connection, even a new one, but the same message appears all the time.

I am a new guide here, and have a private network setting question.I am using Vista X64 Business, and connecting to internet through HUB without IP sharing function. I set the local area connection to "Private" in "Network and Sharing Center". But it would change to "public" if I restarted the computer.

I have two windows xp computers behind a linksys router. I would like to be able to access one of these computers from a vista computer while on the road. I am looking to purchase a linksys/cisco vpn router BEFSX41 and getting a static ip address. How do I go about this? Do I need specialized software in addition or can this be accomplished without a lot of hassle?

my network connection keeps switching between public and private, despite my configuring it to a private network. Because of this, my PS3 is unable to connect (using laptop as media center to stream data to PS3). We are using a DLINK DIR-615 at the moment. I also have Linksys WRT54GS that I could switch back to, but I had problems with my laptop staying connected with that and we had the Dlink kicking around, so we swapped to see if my laptop would stay connected with it, and so far it has. Or atleast when it switches to "local only", it reconnects right away. I'm trying to stream movies and music to my PS3. But whenever it flips to "public", I can no long stream the files. can stay I it to set as a private network?

I am using a Dell XPS 420. I have been able to transfer files via a private network with no problems until now. I made a share folder with the correct permission. I can transfer any file under 5MB with no errors. If I send a file at 6MB it will process the folder and after 5 min I get this error message:
Network Error... There is a problem accessing C:userpublicetwork testfile name28624.zip.
It says make sure you are connected to the network and try again. Is there a timing issue causing the lost connection? I worked with Dell and since it worked in Jan 08 to reinstall the backup for the Dell Factory settings. I thought I would check with the Windows Vista Community before I do the reinstall. I also have another computer with Windows Vista Ultimate and I can transfer the files with no problem via Hamachi network.

Pardon if I just sound really computer illiterate, but I've recently switched from Windows XP to Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit.. and can't connect to the internet. I've got an HP Firebird 802, even sent it back to the company only to be told they had no problems connecting. I plugged in the ethernet cable directly into our wireless modem/router, but it still tells me that the network cable is unplugged. I've turned on Network Discovery, and still nothing. Just a lovely red X over my network status. I have a Westell 327w wireless modem/router, and the other computers that are on it are running XP.

Privacy features such as InPrivate browsing in Internet Explorer 8 and similar features in Chrome and Firefox promise to protect your privacy by not keeping track of page history, temporary files and cookies. This may be enough to hide your tracks from a beginner computer user but there are still traces of what sites you visit within the local DNS cache. An advanced user can run the ipconfig /displaydns command to view the most recent sites visited....

My internet connection is thwarted when Vista detects Multiple Networks in the Network and Sharing Center. I want to select the "unidentified network" and delete it but there is no option to do this. The ISP is no help. Anyone run across this problem? ENVIRONMENT: Broadband connection direct from the modem. Not using wireless. Only one internet connection. Not on a network. Have not updated to SP1 yet.

If you put your Vista PC (I'm on a laptop) to sleep, then wake it, and (right after it wakes) try to visit a Web site -- does it take a little while before that works for you? With XP / Win200 I can immediately get online after it wakes, but with Vista I have to wait -- so I'm curious to know if others have the same problem, or if there's something funky about my setup. So, if you have a sec -- it would be great if you might put yours to sleep, wake it, and then try to visit a site -- does that work right away for you, or do you have to wait too?

1. My network has ALWAYS failed upon RESUME FROM SLEEP using a WIRELESS connection via a NETGEAR WN121T wireless-N USB 2.0 adapter, but NOT when using a wired Ethernet connection.
2. It also works perfectly from BOOT via the WN121T wireless connection with my NETGEAR DG834N draft 802.11n (and another 802.11g) wireless modem/router on Windows Vista Ultimate, both with and without the SP1 Release Candidate.
3. But upon resumption from SLEEP, the wireless n/w connection has ALWAYS failed: attempting to re-connect to the network fails, and Device Manager reports for the WN121T that ???Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43)???.
4. The only remedy is to REBOOT.
5. The consequences of this are twofold:.........

I just completed updating a system doing a clean install of XP and then updating to VISTA Home Premium. Everything works OK except I have one problem. After some period of time the system either goes to sleep or hibernates - don't know which. I thought I set the power properties so as to turn the monitor off after 20 minutes but to leave the system on. My question is - How do I get the system to "wake up" after it either goes
to sleep or hibernates. Moving the mouse and pressing the start button does nothing.

My pc seems to wake up on it's own at 7 am every day. It used to wake up at 10 am but somehow changed to 7 am. I checked all of the things listed on the first page here Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems, and I have nothing enabled to wake up the pc nor do I have any tasks scheduled for that time each morning. It stopped for a while and out of nowhere it started again at 7 AM. I also checked all of the wake on link settings and they are disabled as well. Wait for link however is set to auto detect... not sure what that means but i dont think that has anything to do with the random wakeups.

I'm having some trouble trying to get my PC to lock up when it comes out of "sleep" mode. It also does not go into the Screen Saver anymore it just goes straight to "turn off display" and then it doesnt lock up the PC when it "wakes up". I am guessing this is an interface problem or maybe a registry problem.

I'm completely confused on this issue and I've baffled people at Dell, which from experience isn't hard to do. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista Home Basic as the OS. My CPU usage bumps between 10% and 44% after I first start up my computer. And when I allow my computer to sleep and then wake it up, it runs at 100% constantly. I've tried stopping programs from running in MSCONFIG, I've ran Ad-Aware 2007, Spyware, Registry Cleaner and McAfee Virus scan. Nothing has corrected this problem and the programs have cleaned off a few items, but still nothing has changed. I tried checking the Reliability and Performance Monitor and I'm not educated enough in computers to know what I'm looking at. Dell thinks I should reinstall my OS and start over, but I don't want to do this unless it's the last possible recourse.

My computer used to go to sleep but recently I've changed some settings and downloaded some new things and now everytime it goes to sleep it immediately wakes back up. Last night when it did hibernate I could not get the computer to come back on. I had to take the battery out of my laptop and put it back in to get it to start. The only way I can get my computer to hibernate now is to lock my computer first. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I turned off the sidebar, and have closed all programs and that doesn't help. There was something I found online last night about the network card and now allowing it to wake the computer. That's already been done (sorry I'm not a computer person lol this probably makes no sense to you).

Vista takes some time to wake from hibernation (2-3 minutes, before my wireless network is detected and browser is usable, say). To not waste my time staring at the screen, I hit the power button, leave the computer, and come back when all systems are running. However, by the time I've returned in maybe 5 mins, the laptop (Thinkpad T61) is back in hibernation mode. It seems like without any keyboard or trackpad input, the computer simply returns to hibernate. how to configure Vista to remain on without this keyboard input? I don't see any options in my power settings (in advanced as well). I also don't require a password upon wakeup, so I can go directly to my desktop.

I just got my Vista 64bit laptop working wireless with my WinXP desktop through a Belkin router. I can transfer files using either PC and can print from the laptop on the two printers connected to the desktop. IOW, I can do everything I need so far.
When I open Vista's Network and Sharing Center on the laptop, I see the SSID name that I'm connected to, with "Public network" next to it. Is there any reason I should change it to Private? Either way, could someone please explain the pros and cons of having it set to public or private?

I have been asked by my company to evaluate Vista Buisness for use in our company. All of our laptops are purchased from HP and as of a few months ago come with Vista OEM licenses so licenses are not a problem. But as soon as we receive a new laptop it is imaged with XP removing the original windows vista installation and recovery partition. So we have no copy of Vista oem. Does anyone know a place I can download Vista OEM, (Note I only want the files don't want a pirate copy) which I can use with our OEM key.

I have three desktops and a laptop connected to a linksys router connected to a comcast cable box. The comcast system uses a WPA encryption which cannot be changed to WEP as they do not use WPA. I have system 3 shield (iolo) system guard, antivirus, firewall, and the Vista ultimate firewall turned off. I see an unknown computer named FISHY (IP 192.168.1.139) with unknown gaming files on my home network. I have renamed the network on all of our computers and still this unknown computer shows up using MSHOME. I've enabled the Linksys router to acept only the IP addresses our computers, and to deny the IP of FISHY to no avail. How do I remove the FISHY computer. If I turn off the file sharing or discovery all that does is make the FISHY intruder become invisible but they are still there on the network. The shared files on FISHY say Desktop.ini so they are hacking into my system, how do I stop?

From what I am told, Cisco VPN client will not work with Vista and it is Microsoft's fault. Can you shed some light on this? Cisco is pointing the finger at MS, but it is their software that is causing the problem. Start Before Logon and Microsoft Certificate with Private Key Protect Fails Trying to connect the VPN client using Start Before Logon (SBL) and Microsoft Machine-based certificates fails. This is a Microsoft issue, not a VPN Client problem.
